Zoo Twilights: Melbourne

Well, Saturday was an incendiary show!

My favourite thing about Neil live is the way he re-invents the sound of the songs on every tour, and sings them with a renewed passion.

The backing vocals by EJ and crew were what made this performance shine for me, especially on Private Universe.

History Never Repeats was the highlight I guess, because I wasn’t expecting it and it was my first time to hear it live.

First time to see Liam live too, and I loved his songs, except for Miracle Glance, which is too weak melodically for a pop-rock set imho.

The new songs sound a bit hook-less to me, with Meet Me in the Air perhaps the most promising.

Very special to share forty years of songs with a Melbourne audience of a wide demographic!

We too looked around us and couldn't believe what we saw. The different ages representing each generation was outstanding. There should be more bands out there trying to reach each generation closing the gaps within us all.  The music well we have been to a few shows and it just keeps getting better.

As Neil said he'd like to play the new songs to a receptive audience. Like you I wasn't hit with the let's play that song again but I have heard a couple of songs not played last night which I believe will hook.

Back to life is definitely one. I would love to sit in tonight's audience and watch the response but I fear the setlist may be the same as last nights. Nevertheless, there's a few that got our hips swinging   As for Liam, he is definitely getting there. The rocker that he is can and will hold his own.

I would agree about the lack of hooks. As always they are growing with each listen.  The one that stood out instantly to me on 1st listen was Back to Life. I was a concerned that Liam”s influence on Neil might produce songs that would be way    to heavy or psychedelic for my taste but it seems there is compromise both ways.

I totally agree

I’ve been surprised how few setlists Back to Life is has been on. I think it is probably the most immediately accessible of the new songs.

I do think the new songs have hooks, it is just that they are very subtle!

Any Other Way was a song that did absolutely nothing for me initially but now I can’t get enough of it. I’m guessing Neil and Liam must feel the same about it as it is the only song that has been on every set list to date!

From the new songs, I really like Where's My Room? live. Apparently the recorded version from the NZ vinyls is different, is that right? I really like the groove of that song, live anyway.

I was at the Zoo performance last night (and what a night it was). I managed to get at the barriers right in front of Neil. Dream come true! I got a setlist at the end that has Listen on it. I've heard that song before (if it's the one Neil has performed before) and I don't remember it being played. If you were there last night did I zone out for 4 minutes and it was actually played?

It was great meeting you Bee, let's keep in touch! I'm sorry to have missed you when you left.  You're right, Listen did not get played as far as I can remember.  Can anyone else correct me?

It was great meeting you too Annie, and I'll definitely keep in touch! I'm sorry I missed you too at the end. My taxi arrived quickly so I had to go... unfortunately.

I'm pretty sure the song was dropped, probably due to time. I'm so sure I'd remember it if it was played.

Hey Belbee,

Glad you had such a great time at the show.

I have watched the zoo show that is up on youtube, and from what I can tell, there isn't too much difference between Wheres My Room live and the recorded version on the vinyl. The main difference is that the recorded version sounds like it used cellos for the riff (whereas I think Elroy was playing it on the bass live). The cellos are actually pretty prominent and get more so towards the end of the song. I think it is a really cool recording.  The vocals sound a bit fuller live but I think that is because on the recording it is just Liam and Neil (and I think, Conan Mockasin) but the live version seems to have EJ, Jimmy, and Sharon singing along as well.

I'm pretty sure that anybody who enjoyed the live version, won't be disappointed in the recorded one (and vice versa for that matter).

I keep hoping that the liner notes will appear on the website (as per what the vinyl cover says) so we can know more about the recording.

Thank you for the reply Whysus. After hearing it live I was a little annoyed at myself for not recording a snippet so I could listen to it again, how it was as I did think it was different. But now I know the recorded version is very similar, then I'm all good. I really can't wait to hear it now!

No Listen  was not played. That along with Hiding place stood out like Back to Life. For me. I am sorry he did not play it Annie999999.

No doubt will hear it in Queensland 😊 I was so happy to hear snippets of Quasimodos Dream before support act came on. Although it wasn't Neil that sang it. That song suits his voice.

June can't come quick enough. Am so disappointed I can't get to NZ due to maybe heading into hospital. Oh well 😊 life's still good ✌

Queensland (well, and Auckland) will also hear Second Nature, which I'm quietly obsessed with! Almost got it with Liam's song, Second Chance, in terms of the title... just needed to change that last word Neil!
