Paul Hester plays drums on most songs. Ricky Fataar was drummer on tracks that were intended for the aborted first Finn Brothers record.

Paul Hester re-recorded drums on some of those (How Will You Go, Chocolate Cake, Tall Trees, It’s Only Natural). Ricky Fataar’s original drum tracks remain on only three songs (Weather With You, All I Ask, There Goed God).

Rather telling that even in 1992 Paul and Nick were still anxious about their position in the band.

Even late in the recording of the first album it was still unknown whether the entity that made the album would be Neil Finn solo plus sidemen or a full band. I should re-read “Something So Strong”, but if I’m not mistaken Capitol had a contract with Neil ànd Paul for a record deal and Nick was added to that contract some time later.

My guess is that Youth is more of a feels/ emotional guy I don't particularly trust his factual information.  For instance: He  states that McCartney plays multiple songs of the Fireman album on tour. Clearly McCartney is proud of the album, but I don't see songs of the album played recently.

Good point.  Intuitively, that’s how I perceive Youth.  I wonder if Nick and Paul conveyed their insecurities to him.  We know how restless Neil can be.  His willingness to scrap songs, albums, and even bands/musicians is well documented. He certainly had (and still has) the artistic license to do so but that must have played heavily on Nick, Paul and Mark.   Youth’s name dropping of Steve Gadd seems out of place though, given what we know about the making of Woodface.  His memory lenses may just be herb tinted.

Guy, thanks for sharing this fascinating interview of Stuart.  Much of it confirms what I knew about the history of Woodface.  Youth threw a curveball that stunned me.  I just could not imagine Steve Gadd on a Crowded House song.  I feared that credit was given to Ricky and Paul, but that Gadd was the actual drummer. I don’t think that’s the case but it definitely questioned my knowledge bank.  Now I see it as Youth talking out of his arse.

He has only ever played 2 - Highway and Sing the Changes. They were both very good live, last seen in 2017 (which, 9 years after it came out, is a pretty good run).

I get the impression that Youth never lets the truth get in the way of a good story!  I would say however that Together alone is in my opinion the best crowded house album. Actually its my favorite album full stop.

Also after listening to the Fandango podcasts it seems to be Neils as well even though neither Neil or Mark had much time for Youth and called him a chancer.
