Whispers and Moans puzzle...

Question for you all... at the end of "Whispers and Moans" (for instance, on Farewell to the World" at 3:13 into the song) Neil kind of raps some lyrics that I can't quite figure out. Has anyone (other than Neil) determined the lyrics for that portion? Thanks! Don

I think it's something like this:

We are the villains, in the mirrors of each other in a lifetime of suspicion, cleansed in a moment a flash of recognition, you gave your life for it, worth its weight in gold in Roman empires, art collectors and Alan's sound investments, will one day be forgotten, one day be forgotten, yeah...

I think the "Alan's sound investments" part is a reference to a specific scandal, a Ponzi-type scheme someone in Australia or NZ perpetrated.
I think that's pretty close, slowpogo - dang, I always think it's "Adam's sound investments"...biblical! But it is "Alan's," you are quite right.

In fact, I believe the lyric for the coda rant is actually included in the lyric sheet? If not there, than in the sheet music. I remember it was someplace fairly authoritative.

It's been so long since I saw it, but I believe it's "we are mirrors of each other in a lifetime of suspicion," but apart from that, looks pretty sound. Don't remember the villains part.

I just listened again to some boots and the original track...it definitely starts "We are the [villains] in the mirrors of each other in a lifetime of suspicion". Maybe I'm wrong about that word, but I listened to four different live cuts and I'm pretty sure it's "villains."
OK, the Woodface CD booklet does include lyrics for the rant:

"We are the mirrors of each other
in a lifetime of suspicion
cleansed in a moment, a flash of
recognition
you gave your life for it
worth it's [sic] weight in gold and growing
empires
Art collectors and Alans [sic] sound
investments
will one day be forgotten, one day be
forgotten
YEAH!"

But apart from the apostrophication issues, I don't think it's "growing empires" (I thought it was "crumbling" but "Roman" works well, sound-wise).

And slowpogo, I agree with you, there's definitely something ahead of the "mirrors" part. Come to that, on the recording it doesn't sound like "we are the mirrors" so much as "... we're the mirrors" or "we are mirrors."

I used to put it together as either: "you and me / We are mirrors of each other in a lifetime of suspicion..." or "we are mirrors / we're the mirrors of each other in a ..." but your "villains" could slot in just fine too.

Hard to make out once Neil starts yelling! Is there a "Favorite Neil Rant" thread yet? Big Grin

For the longest time I always heard "our unsound investments" instead of "Alan's", but it's definitely Alan... in fact I think Neil comments a bit on that line on the FWTTW commentary track, but I could be wrong.

Yeh your right. On the FTTW commentary track, Neil quote: "Alan Foster, that was referring to, Kylie's father". Kylie Minogue assuming?

According to that font of all wisdom, Wikipedia, Kylie's dad is one Ronald Charles Minogue.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing too, hence the question mark, ha.

There is an Aussie actress called Kylie Foster, but who knows if that's her real name/who Neil was referring to...
Just had a listen to the 4 live versions of Whispers and Moans that i've got aswell as the album version and I'm defenitly hearing "growing empires".

As for the start of the rant, I'm not so sure. I'm hearing we are the ___ans, in the mirrors of each other in a lifetime of suspicion. Not quite hearing villains but then I don't know what I am hearing
