Eric Clapton - Clapton

Co-produced by guitarist and long-time collaborator Doyle Bramhall II, ‘Clapton’ features an all star cast of musical collaborations started with the legendary JJ Cale, drummer Jim Keltner, bassist Willie Weeks, and keyboardist Walt Richmond – and the sessions later added guests including Steve Winwood, Wynton Marsalis, Sheryl Crow, Allen Toussaint, and Derek Trucks. Clapton created a collection that touches on everything from century-old traditional brass bands to little-known country blues to brand-new originals. The result is both relaxed and revelatory, and unlike anything the guitarist has done in his legendary career.

Edwyn Collins - Losing Sleep

2010 release from the Scottish singer/songwriter and former Orange Juice leader, his first album recorded since his 2005 stroke. The album’s co-writers include Franz Ferdinand’s Alex Kapranos and Nick McCarthy, Magic Numbers frontman Romeo Stodart, the Cribs’ Ryan Harman, Brooklyn band the Drums, and former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr . Aztec Camera’s Roddy Frame also appears.
Bought a few CDs this week:

Some very folk-influenced albums there, but all very different in their style and approach.

I Am Arrows, by contrast, is a great pop album - lots of gorgeous melodies and really strong hooks - think a mixture of the Lightning Seeds, 80s pop, Oasis, Beatles, Kinks, Crowded House. Strong debut from the former Razorlight drummer Andy Burrows (who wrote all the songs and played all the instruments).

Here's one of the singles from the album "Green Green Grass" -

Most of the album's on You Tube, but here's one of my favourites - Battle for Hearts and Minds -
Okay, now I am truly obsessed. This album has been playing in my house every waking moment I have been home for the past 4 days. That's saying a lot. Wink I wish very much I could see them live, but sadly they are playing in Harlem (yikes) on a school night, so it is not to be. Frowner

Joseph Arthur is more amazing on this album than he's been in several years. Dhani Harrison is a completely unexpected revelatory suprise.

It really is an exceptionally good album is it not Brownie! Wink

The (Remastered - Reissue)

Darkness at the break of noon
Shadows even the silver spoon
The handmade blade, the child's balloon
Eclipses both the sun and moon
To understand you know too soon
There is no sense in trying.

Pointed threats, they bluff with scorn
Suicide remarks are torn
From the fools gold mouthpiece
The hollow horn plays wasted words
Proved to warn
That he not busy being born
Is busy dying.

Temptation's page flies out the door
You follow, find yourself at war
Watch waterfalls of pity roar
You feel to moan but unlike before
You discover
That you'd just be
One more person crying.

So don't fear if you hear
A foreign sound to your ear
It's alright, Ma, I'm only sighing.

As some warn victory, some downfall
Private reasons great or small
Can be seen in the eyes of those that call
To make all that should be killed to crawl
While others say don't hate nothing at all
Except hatred.

Disillusioned words like bullets bark
As human gods aim for their marks
Made everything from toy guns that spark
To flesh-colored Christs that glow in the dark
It's easy to see without looking too far
That not much
Is really sacred.

While preachers preach of evil fates
Teachers teach that knowledge waits
Can lead to hundred-dollar plates
Goodness hides behind its gates
But even the President of the United States
Sometimes must have
To stand naked.

An' though the rules of the road have been lodged
It's only people's games that you got to dodge
And it's alright, Ma, I can make it.

Advertising signs that con you
Into thinking you're the one
That can do what's never been done
That can win what's never been won
Meantime life outside goes on
All around you.

You loose yourself, you reappear
You suddenly find you got nothing to fear
Alone you stand without nobody near
When a trembling distant voice, unclear
Startles your sleeping ears to hear
That somebody thinks
They really found you.

A question in your nerves is lit
Yet you know there is no answer fit to satisfy
Insure you not to quit
To keep it in your mind and not forget
That it is not he or she or them or it
That you belong to.

Although the masters make the rules
For the wise men and the fools
I got nothing, Ma, to live up to.

For them that must obey authority
That they do not respect in any degree
Who despise their jobs, their destinies
Speak jealously of them that are free
Do what they do just to be
Nothing more than something
They invest in.

While some on principles baptized
To strict party platforms ties
Social clubs in drag disguise
Outsiders they can freely criticize
Tell nothing except who to idolize
And then say God Bless him.

While one who sings with his tongue on fire
Gargles in the rat race choir
Bent out of shape from society's pliers
Cares not to come up any higher
But rather get you down in the hole
That he's in.

But I mean no harm nor put fault
On anyone that lives in a vault
But it's alright, Ma, if I can't please him.

Old lady judges, watch people in pairs
Limited in sex, they dare
To push fake morals, insult and stare
While money doesn't talk, it swears
Obscenity, who really cares
Propaganda, all is phony.

While them that defend what they cannot see
With a killer's pride, security
It blows the minds most bitterly
For them that think death's honesty
Won't fall upon them naturally
Life sometimes
Must get lonely.

My eyes collide head-on with stuffed graveyards
False goals, I scuff
At pettiness which plays so rough
Walk upside-down inside handcuffs
Kick my legs to crash it off
Say okay, I have had enough
What else can you show me ?

And if my thought-dreams could been seen
They'd probably put my head in a guillotine
But it's alright, Ma, it's life, and life only.

Bob Dylan - It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)

I was cruising around Real Groovy yesterday and grabbed this. Man! i'm impressed.

Neil Young - On The Beach

GOD!.. How I have treasured this album! I Still have the original Vinyl record bought back in 1974 & is still in mint condition. Every time one listens to it there seems to be little nuggets of gold that appear .. I guess in a kind of a revelatory way. I guess it's fair to say that it is my fave Neil Young album. 10 out of 10 **********
Don McGlashan, Miracle Sun -- the best evocation of New Zealand forest and sea ever. And for good measure, the video takes us through the Waipoua forest to the Hokianga harbour, and back in time to Opo the Gay Dolphin's beachside antics ...

They say when people get to the water
They don't undress, they just keep on walking out from the beach

They say men weep when they see the dolphin
He comes in close and does tricks for the children just out of reach

And we're on our way
Through the big forest
There's a line of cars
Coming down the hill

They say he lets you go right up and touch him
They say he lets you ride on his back all slippery and gold

And the sun comes in through the hot windscreen
And the trees reach out all dusty and green along the road

And we're on our way
Through the big forest
There's a line of cars
Coming down the hill

Are you going where we're going?
Are you going where we're going?
I hope you will

Miracle Sun
Shine on my sister
Shine on our car

Miracle Sun
Shine on the water
Shine in my heart

Long Time Gone

My parents raised me tenderly,
I was their only son.
My mind got mixed with ramblin'
When I was all so young,
And I left my home the first time
When I was twelve and one.
I'm a long time a-comin', Maw,
An' I'll be a long time gone.

On the western side of Texas,
On the Texas plains,
I tried to find a job o'work
But they said I's young of age.
My eyes they burned when I heard,
"Go home where you belong!"
I'm a long time a-comin',
An' I'll be a long time gone.

I remember when I's ramblin'
Around with the carnival trains,
Different towns, different people,
Somehow they're all the same.
I remember children's faces best,
I remember travelin' on.
I'm a long time a-comin',
I'll be a long time gone.

I once loved a fair young maid
An' I ain't too big to tell,
If she broke my heart a single time,
She broke it ten or twelve.
I walked and talked all by myself,
I did not tell no one.
I'm a long time a-comin', babe,
An' I'll be a long time gone.

Many times by the highwayside,
I tried to flag a ride.
With bloodshot eyes and gritting teeth,
I'd watch the cars roll by.
The empty air hung in my head
I's thinkin' all day long.
I'm a long time a-comin',
An' I'll be a long time gone.

You might see me on your crossroads
When I'm a-passin' through.
Remember me how you wished to
As I'm a-driftin' from your view.
I ain't got the time to think about it,
I got too much to get done.
Well, I'm a long time comin'
An' I'll be a long time gone.

If I can't help somebody
With a word or song,
If I can't show somebody
They are travelin' wrong.
But I know I ain't no prophet
An' I ain't no prophet's son.
I'm just a long time a-comin'
An' I'll be a long time gone.

So you can have your beauty,
It's skin deep and it only lies.
And you can have your youth,
It'll rot before your eyes.
Just give to me my gravestone
With it clearly carved upon:
"I's a long time a-comin',
An' I'll be a long time gone."
I am listening to all the Crowded House from the beginning up to Time On Earth.

I miss the urgency and originality of Crowded House that seems to be missing ffrom Time On Earth and Intriguer.

Just MY pont of view so don't go off on one your guys! Roll Eyes

I am moving on to Tim's Imaginary Kingdom. Gentle ,sweet, true feelings in song, not ambiguous in the least and just lovely to listen to.
