Ok now I'm all Countdowned out, I have regain my sanity and rediscovered two brilliant CDs in my collection that are being played on high rotation, even as I type:

More Bill Nelson i'm affraid. Bit of a Nelson fest of late. Never got the critical acclaim of bands like Japan, or Depeche Mode, but that didn't seem to halt his sonic explorations.
How he ever did those analog tape looped drum beats off The Love That Whirls album, is beyond me.

Andy White's Boy 40. I like ALT so decided to give Andy a shot and well the album is brilliant. I can't get enough of it atm.

SQUEEZE: Been playing their "original" greatest hits album Singles - 45s And Under a bit lately. Love those early, early hits 'Take Me I'm Yours', 'Goodbye Girl' and 'Cool For Cats' - those lyrics are catchy as hell, and Jools Holland does some almost Eddie Rayner-ish keyboard work!
TALKING HEADS: Tina Weymouth - one of my favourite bass players, and damn awesome to see a girl in a rock band but not as a singer.
THE STYLE COUNCIL: I too am guilty of preferring the Council over the Jam! Glad to know I'm not the only one! Their first greatest hits CD has been a firm favourite of mine for many years now. 'Shout To The Top!' is one of the great '80s feel-good songs, and there's plenty of other catchy tunes...'My Ever Changing Moods', 'Long Hot Summer', 'Money-Go-Round'...

Violator (Depeche Mode) - Forgot how great this album is. Sounds suberb in surround too.
Best Of Mental As Anything - a truly great but quirky pop band. The proof is this 24 track best which is hit after hit but still doesn't feature ALL the hits. A sign of a great singles band.
Ill Communication (Beastie Boys) - probably not Neil Finn's favourite band! But then I find Bic Runga boring so it evens out on the Frenz scale.

& i did lash out & spun a bit of Cocteau Twins just to break things up a bit. Heaven & Las Vegas (heaven thanks!), Sugar Hickup, Aikea Guinea, look they're all good really. Shame they haven't made another one.

They are indeed a fantastic band your so {adopt Greedy Smith Falsetto} STROOOOONG Have you heard the unplugged album they released very recently? Some very nice alternative arrangements on the classics. Can I Come Too is absolutely beautiful on it.

Teenage by Andy White - couldn't believe my luck - found it second hand for only $5! Its got some great songs and Tim even appears on some tracks.

Sunday 8pm by Faithless: One of the few dance/electronic orientated bands worth bothering with. This is as rich and dark as they come.
Fossil Fuel by XTC: Why this band was never huge I will never ever know. They were (and still are) brilliant

Mixture of songs & Sean Nos stuff from Sinead O'Connor, and got Mandika, coughed up the dough for her Best Of, finally. Most played out of my hodge podge of her stuff would have to be 'Haunted by the Ghost', duet with the Pogues, excellent stuff.

Grant Lee Phillips' new album, nineteeneighties...it's so good! covers of 80s songs. hard to pick a favorite, but I'll go with Age of Consent (New Order)...though his take on the Pixies' Wave of Mutilation is awesome, too.

I've just acquired some of Lisa Germano's work, been listening to that a lot lately - but it's not for the faint of heart! Compelling, creepy and beautiful all at one time.
I've also been listening to Tom Waits, I saw him last Wednesday (Aug. 9) on one of his rare tours - I was extremely lucky to get tickets! He is a master! The show was great.

Filigree & Shadow, by This Mortal Coil. 4AD had some great artists, & always amazing album artwork & photography. Very Victorian Gothic kind of vibe.
The Cocteau Twins, BBC Sessions. Very raw sound but fantastic stuff.
Ant Music, by Adam & The Ants. Unlock the jukebox, & do us all a favour.

Hey the sound of running water through the pipes could be on the 4AD label with a gothic cover design. Just put some feedback behind it and you've got a Cocteau Twins B side.

For road listening, I pulled out Sleeper from Nigel Griggs. I totally dig the album though it's not like Enz at all.

Oh, I almost forgot. I am listening to Johnny Cash's "At Folsom Prison" as I am writing this. Got around to getting it on CD (with San Quentin) and it's almost like a religious experience. Now I know why this man is a true legend and will be missed.

Gav - IMHO At San Quentin is far better than Folsom. Make sure you buy the remastered/expanded edition.
I've got the expanded/remastered editions in the special "Vinyl Classics" package (same CD but the disc looks like a record).
Have to admit San Quentin's got the edge over Folsom but it seems Folsom is much seedier. I suppose playing in a prison will bring that out in you!

I think that's because the cook at Folsom was stingier with the oatmeal serves.

'Broken Boy Soldiers' by the Raconteurs and the last two White Stripes albums.
I've been told that Q magazine wrote that people who liked the Raconteurs should also listen to Woodface (their 'if you like this you should listen to...') ... I think 'Hands' sounds a bit CH style but otherwise was quite surprised! Though someone pointed out that Not The Girl You Think You Are could be a link (not that that was on Woodface...)
