I finally bought Band On The Run today.

I really wonder what Macca was thinking when he wrote the song Band on the Run. It sounds like three totally different songs crowbarred together. I listened to it the other day for the first time in years (went through a bit of a Macca phase) and didn't even recognise it as Band on the Run until it hit the chorus. Uncle Albert/Admiral whatshisface from RAM suffers from the same crowbar treatment.
Actually, those songs are three different songs melded together. Paul always had a problem with middle 8's and finishing certain songs and that was where Lennon jumped in. John sometimes had the same problem. But, without the other one around they had to hack together more than one song.

A Day in the Life is the perfect example of both Lennon and McCartney having unfinished songs which they put together.

Personally though, Paul's habit of melding songs together almost always worked for me, I loved them. The changes were like having more than one bridge in a song and I thought the variety was great!

To each his own though. Smiler

IO thought so. That's exactly what it sounds like. Uncle Albert works, but I don't find Band on the Run to be a satisfying whole. 3 great sections, doesn't work altogether for me.

As you say, each to their own.

We Can Work It Out is another great example, Lennon provided the bridge for that.
Well I had to put it on after all the yakking, your fault Gav. Fred Dagg Anthology. Do prefer the Dagg to the latter political meanderings.
Although 'the Front Fell Off' is an absolute classic. or....
Hi its Bruce, B RHH OOOH SSS!
Talk about drink, talk about fight Trev.

Apart from that, Gordon Lightfoot, just love Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald always have. Good story teller there but pretty much verbatim from reading the story lines on the net.
"Does anyone know where the love of God goes, when the waves turn the minutes into hours"
great line.

Time on Earth, giving it a go, well trying and trying.

That'll be "Unplugged - The Official Bootleg". The Russian Album (or Choba B CCCP) is one other kettle of fish...

BTW, has anyone ever heard Twin Freaks - a mashup of Macca solo. It pre-dates Love by a year but is the same concept. Some of it is marvellous (some bits not so). If you have a few dimes to spare on iTunes or similar, give Oh Woman Oh Why, Lalula and Coming Up a go. Or the six minute dance-athon that is Maybe I'm Amazed...

Macca semed to be struggling a fair bit on vocals on that CD, particularly And I Lover Her and She's A Woman (how much did he lower that by??).

Glad you enjoyed it Seany. He was a talented Fecker that keyboard player Big Grin

I've also been listening to American Doll Posse by Tori Amos. Possibly her best, most consistent work. Period.

Agree with that. Right up there with Boys for Pele, a great album. The live shows I've heard from the current tour are a bit lacklustre. It's fine, but that special spark doesn't seem to be there. Maybe they were off nights (and by that I mean she was only giving 100% rather than 200%. If you've seen her live you'll know what I mean).

Bela Bartok - Viola Concerto. Absolutely beautiful.
Not Bruce Bayliss, but Mr Springsteen live in Dublin the Seeger Sessions dvd. It needs more bass. Not Bruce's best effort. Lots of brass in this one. Not really enjoying his singing in this one, bit too rough. Beloved's skipped through a few songs, and fast fwd through a few, and he's the fan!

"It stood out like a moment of fun at a Frank Ifield concert."

Smile - Brian Wilson (Wow!)

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road - Elton John (The 5.1 mix. His masterpiece and always will be)

Dream Days At The Hotel Existence - Powderfinger (Hard not to like this)

Abacab - Genesis (5.1 mix. The most damned band of all time but I love this album and I can't tell you why)

Out Of The Blue - Electric Light Orchestra (A great case for remastering properly. A great album just got better)

and...

Travelling Wilburys Collection - Travelling Wilburys (Forgot how excellent and yet gloriously dumb that first album was! Another strong case for remastering properly)

So as you can see I've been busy listening to a lot of great CDs the past month. Roll on July 2nd when I am sure I can add Time On Earth to this list
