Cant Carry On
I do the harmony thing on this song, too; there's a really cool moving line that goes brilliantly underneath that last note he holds - right before it goes into the final "Alllllll...IIIIIIIIIIIIII...Aaaaaaaaaaask."quote:Originally posted by Mr. Sadly:
Oh, I love "All I Ask"! I have all these involved harmonies that I contribute to it right before the orchestral movement kicks in.
I'm not sure it fits into the album, but then Woodface is so WAW anyway.
*Wild And Wooly
I still hate the song, though.
I have been listening to Time on Earth again recently. I still think it's a terribly underrated album, full of terribly underrated songs. Nothing on Intriguer matches it for emotional rawness or complexity.
A Sigh is a monster. I can see why it puts most people off: it's hardly a pick-me-up that makes you smile as the s*** comes down. With this song, Neil taps a darkness that scares the bejesus out of most of us -- the feeling of utter hopelessness that wells up as you watch a dearly loved friend succumb to the feeling of utter hopelessness. He could have made this emotional snapshot morbid, or pretentious. But instead he captures the emotion succinctly, movingly, and with so much humanity. It's a classic ... and it deserved better than to be used as Ugly Betty's break-up track with nerdy boyfriend #1.
She Walked Her Way Down is also beyond superb. On the recorded version, Rikki Gooch's and Ethan Johns's drumming doesn't do it justice. Live, on tour in 2007-8, it became a showstopper. It's near the top of my dream list of songs I wish Neil would re-record with Matt Sherrod on drums. That, and You Can Touch (of course).

Oh yes! the best song they never put out on a CD.....apart from Convent Girls, Only Way To Go Is Forward, Lucky,Isolation Mk 1 etc etc etc
- would have to say Tombstone, Transit Lounge or Never Be The Same for me.......
I'm glad to hear someone else loves "A Sigh". It always makes tears well up when I hear it, because it's so unfiltered and direct and full of aching emotion. For me anyway.
From TOE I'd also say Walked Her Way Down and Heaven That I'm Making.

Wow. The thread lives on almost 3 years after I posted it. I have been getting emails from subsequent posts and I LOVE IT!
I have another song which may ring a bell. "Can't Carry On" from their debut album. Funny thing is this: when I bought the original cassette(!!!) this song wasn't included here in America. It was only when I later purchased the CD that I heard this song.
This song makes me happy. Period. And I have never, ever heard anyone rave about it.
Keep posting your gems...this is fun and I haven't been here for a long time.
Thanks!

still to this day the single best piece of work from Neil and the band in my view. signature Neil lyrics and topic, amazing, and i mean truly amazing atmosphere and guitars, best drumming of any CH song, bass (if not the best) at least as good as any CH song, and the best all out rocker from the band. then it only got better with the 5.1 mix. dont believe me? keep turning it up until you do (when i crank this one i am nearly emotionally and physically drained by the time its over).
I'm liking this thread- glad it was revived.
For me.... Walked Her Way Down is a (forgotten?) gem, (TOE fan!) and....probably I Feel Possessed and In My Command.

- I think I Feel Possessed got plenty of plays/love/respect on the last tour (rightly so!).
Agree re: Walked Her Way Down, although TOE was in the main rather neglected, wasn't it - DSN, Pour Le Monde got fairly frequent plays, English Trees, Silent House & Say That Again got occassional outings but not sure whether anything else did.
Actually be interesting to see some Intriguer Tour stats, i.e. top 5 most played and bottom 5 (properly rehearsed songs, not responses to requests).......but I guess that'll be for another thread!

Another one that I'd love to see get resurrected live is In The Lowlands, I've got a couple of awesome live versions from the TOLM tour, wish they'd have a go at playing it again (I've got one version from the TOE tour that doesn't come close).
I think Say That Again is great as well
Maybe How Will You Go for another one, that seems to have been totally forgotten.

Grrrreat song.
There could be a Crowded House Greatest Hits album full of underappreciated album tracks, and it would be heavy on last tracks.
Crowded House: Greatest Nonhits
It would be a great record.
If I can choose one, which was "only" released as a Demo-Version on the Farewell-DVD:
Spirit of the stairs
This one catches me every time, and this Demo-Version is much better than a lot of CH songs and also much better than the Studio-Version from the TWT-Sessions (Neil solo). I also like the rocky-raw groove of this demo-version.
Still a shame that this song never was recorded properly again, for Intriguer f.e.

totally agree I love "Spirit of the stairs" it never seemed to fit on various albums. Hopefully one day it will appear somewhere for the masses.

Spirit of the Stairs....another GREAT song.
I was thinking...regarding my earlier post about a greatest nonhits record. I'd like to attend a greatest nonhits concert....a show full of album tracks, b-sides, underrated songs. Just imagine the setlist..
In the Lowlands
You Can Touch
People Are Like Suns
Love this Life
In My Command
Whispers and Moans
Love You Till the Day I Die
Hole in the River
Killeye
Lost Island
Falling Dove
Catherine Wheels
Nobody Wants To
Spirit of the Stairs
Turn it Around
Convent Girls
Pour le Monde
Silent House
I Walk Away
How Will You Go
Encore:
Recurring Dream
Italian Plastic
Together Alone - complete with Maori choir
Just think what a great show this would be with not a hit in the bunch. That says a lot about them, I think. I found it hard to narrow down. It actually might have to be a really long show with several more songs added

Nice to see Convent Girls mentioned.
I absolutely love Convent Girls and Be My Guest, though CG could probably use some revised lyrics. I'm not aware if they ever performed it apart from the one bootlegged track that's floating around out there, so it probably was never labored over too intensely. But that's part of its charm.
Both that and the Be My Guest recording (again, I think there's only one?) were done during my favorite live period, the Woodface tour. They became rockier and more tightly-professional sounding after Together Alone, but the band had such a wonderfully loose (but still plenty solid) chemistry in 1991-1992. Neil's voice still sounds amazing today, but I think it sounded best in that period, and probably due to physiology it'll never be quite that great again (no fault to him, it's just age).

- Yep, that'd make a great fanclub show setlist, Half-Full, shows how strong the catalogue is, doesn't it?
I've been really enjoying "She's Not There" recently. I know it's just a cover song but I really love what the band did with it.
I find that it's pretty much the only real "b-side" from Temple of Low Men. I know it wasn't actually used as a b-side but it's the only other song in the CH catalog that really has that TOLM sound. By which I guess I mean the instrumentation and the general sound and feel of the recording. Th e keyboard solo sounds particularly like something you'd hear on TOLM. And since TOLM is brilliant album with only 10 tracks, I'm happy to have one more!
Definitely a rarity that every fan should seek out.

Great list; I'd love to see "Tail of a Comet" on there. I doubt it would ever happen, but I'm still hoping to see Neil dust off that one and give it another go.
There are potentially a huge number of underrated songs but for me six stand out. (at least today).
I Feel Possesed - Would be amongst Neils best lyrics - great melody/chorus - complete song
Nails In My Feet - As above. So much atmosphere and again a great lyric in his impressionist style and beautfiful melody
Kare Kare - atmoshphere to burn
Chocolate Cake - the different side of CH - funky and satirical. Maybe is should not have been the single but its a great song
Transit Lounge - As above in terms of difference. This songs sounds contemporary and a bit innovative
English Trees - very moving and I think, along with Salt to the Sea, the great tribute to Paul

Great choices! And, as was already mentioned, "How Will You Go" is somehow underappreciated too.
I don't think this has been mentioned yet: "I Am In Love" is a spectacular song that seems to have gone by the wayside.

'tombstone'.
there, i've said it and i shall say no more.

Skipping lots of posts (yeah, I'm being one of those people), I nominate
"Skin Feeling"
with "Kill Eye" as a close second in this category.

I totally agree with those who said I Am in Love and Tombstone.
Lost Island
the way Neil sings, "you'll always be my girl" conjurs up such strong emotions

Great tune, funky groove. One of my favorites. Wish it would get played live more often.
