A wise man once said "Don't ask the question, you won't like the answer"

But I am going to ask it anyway Big Grin

Should there be a third single (an actual physical cd that one can go into a music store in any country and buy)from Time On Earth

and if it is a song that was done without the whole band should it be released as the original with a 'remixed' version that includes all the guys.

I have said since the start, Nobody Wants To should be a single personally I think it would have amazing potential, given half a chance

The stars look so different from here

I agree that we're done. I suppose it's remotely possible that the label would put out a new single when the UK tour begins, but I doubt it would happen.

For me, the natural song to release as a single is Even a Child. I know that it's not too popular around here, I guess because it has a strong Johnny Marr influence and therefore sounds less like Neil/Crowded House than the rest of the album. Maybe so. But it's also the most immediately commercial song on the album. The other songs that are often named as potential singles--Nobody Wants To, Pour Le Monde--are songs for the fans, not for the broader public, I think.
I'll chime in on this too.
Even a child struck me as the song most likely to grab a casual listener (most commercial song)
Those that 'know' the band may like songs for different reasons as they feel the other songs are more personal to them.
Maybe we like that Neil is taking a stand against war, or he is working thru his feelings for Paul, or for Sharon, or for his sons, or for 'whatever', but the average radio listener does not know about a songs 'history' or 'hidden meaning', and I think Even a Child is a very catchy tune that might of had the best chance out in the real world.
I would love to see a 3rd single. IN my opinion as just a fan it seems like not even giving the album real support to have less than that. Otherwise it will barely register on some people's radar who may just give it a chance.

I do think "Nobody Wants To" could be a single, but I could even imagine "Pour Le Monde" or "English Trees" as singles, especially after a track like "Edible Flowers" got released off FB's Everyone Is Here. Sure music trends can be fickle, but it might still work.
Nobody Wants To or Pur Le Momde would be good singles, but at this point we've all heard them and unless they are "batched" with some other exclusive material, what's the point?

That said, it would be interesting to see if there is an all-demo version of Time On Earth or if the lads want to try that for the next one. About 7 years ago, XTC released a classic recording--Apple Venus I and shortly after that came out with an all demo CD for each and every song, sequenced along with the eventual album. One or two of them were not that much of a departure from what ended up as the definitive releases, but it was still good to hear the songs in their first stages, raw and sparse.
I think 1 final single to provide some closure to the album would be nice. For me it would be between:

- Silent House
- Walked her way down
- Even child
- Say that again

In all honesty, i can't imagine those tracks being hits in any way, but I could imagine them getting some kind of airplay. But I tend to agree with those who think the band should just move onto their next album.
I think that issuing a single around their UK tour would work. The band would be around to promote it, and it would work off the album and tour as a good cross-promotion.

Although it would make sense to issue something that fans will see them play live, I also think that Even A Child is the most obvious choice. I think, however, they'd be more likely to go with Nobody Wants To which, if I recall correctly, was the original choice for second single.
I'd have to agree with the general feeling that a third single probably won't happen, especially given that:
She Called Up isn't available outside the UK (excpet on itunes etc and does that count for chart performance?)
  • I'm sure I heard somewhere that the band are going back into the studio in the new year

However, just for the sake of capitalising on my $0.02, I'd say Pour Le Monde would make a great single. Hey, maybe we'll have it only released in Aus/NZ to support this leg of the tour Big Grin (well, we can only hope anyway)

Not the UK chart no. As for other countries, it would depend on the chart rules in those areas.

good point there, but i actually remember seeing the Chili Peppers live, on the day that they released 'Under The Bridge' as a single, and they didn't play it. REM rarely played 'Bang and Blame' as i recall, and i seem to remember Nirvana playing a gig in Hawaii and not doing 'Teen Spirit'.....

that said, EAC coinciding with the UK dates with Johnny Marr might be fitting...
how about 'Transit Lounge' for something different?
I think dance remixes is a bad idea but different versions of a song is great....even a remix much like U2 does to some of their songs. (although, once again, for the lost part I do not like dance versions of theirs)

I do feel songs evolve, especially after a tour, and I'm sure Neil sometimes feels a song should have been recorded this way or that, after a number of months have passed. I guess that is one of the factors re: One All versus One Nil.
I am really quite sentimental about CH or Neils songs and I wouldn't like to hear a remix at all.

If there was to have been a third single release it should have been "Even a Child" but it is too late, except for Down Under etc., This song is such a summery song and would have been played in bars and beach bars all over and they would have reached so many more people and hooked them in!!

Always disliked "Don't stop Now " and cant understand who decided on this being the first single-UGH!!

Hi All.

Sorry not to post in awhile... busy in a new radio job doing overnights in Queensland (again!).

On the subject of should there be a third single from Time On Earth... yes - but on certain conditions.

By the time a new single gets a run on-air it will be November. Radio stations are getting to push their big (fun and bright) summer hits.

Crowded House should have some extra exposure at this time due to touring and the POSSIBLE(?) induction into the Aria Hall of Fame at the ARIA Awards.

Now if the single is going to be a success and most importantly a radio hit, it needs a remix to fit the current pop trend.

Solutions...

1) not my number 1 choice, but release "walked her way down". As mentioned earlier it needs a U2 Flavoured remix... maybe The Rogue Traders could mix it?
There is two negative points in the song... that's the slow quiet section two times in the songs and the ending.

2) My left of centre but number one choice... TRANSIT LOUNGE. Again this calls for a remix and even having the Chorus come up an extra 2 times.
The ideal group to remix it... Jamiroquai.

That would be a funky song, feels right for ssummer and could mix in well with other (latest) tracks.

Anyway that's my 2 cents.

Hello again peterholden81 nice to see you back Smiler and thanks everyone for your replies so far.

Just wanted to add I could have worded my topic lead better, (personally)I was'nt refering to a dance type remix or anything too dramatic.. more like the alternate version of PALS kind of remix, or as I was saying if it is an album track all the guys did'nt play on, remixed in the sense that on this version they do all play on it. Sorry, as I said I could have worded that part better.

I can't take to dance remixes of songs either (not saying dance music as a whole)but am always keen on hearing acoustic versions etc

Neil emails me about the possible third single, nice to hear from him. I try not to email him while he is on the road as it is a nightmare when you are on that tour bus. He sounds good, so i guess the Crowded House project is still a very positive thing. Must be nice having a few weeks off.

Exciting! I would have to vote for "Walked Her Way Down" too... I don't think "Even A Child" is a good choice - as someone said on this forum once, it sounds a little bit Phil Collins-y...
What what, how did I miss this (thanks proudpom)
Oh yes, I am available for a role as an extra in the vid too Winkwell, I'm in NZ for 8 days in October and I'll be where the guys will be for all the Oz concerts so.....

Any hints as to what the possible single might possibly be or does Nobody want to talk about it....... yet

sorry sorry don't want to get my hope up, just a wittle bit excited, all news most welcome (I was going to say 'It's all good' but I hate that phrase with a passion)and now back to your thread

Agree completely.

Also agree.

Those two songs really stand out on the album to me. The other songs on the album shine brighter in the context of the album. Particularly the first and last songs, which bookend the record perfectly (much like their counterparts on TOGETHER ALONE).

Like many others who've posted, I don't need remixes (but I won't shy away from them either). In light that they record every show and in the past have offered live songs as b-sides, I think they should use live songs as b-sides.

If CH began to use dance remixes to sell their music, I think it would be downhill from then on...

Not necessarily. Can't tell HOW many people I've managed to turn on to "Everything But The Girl" after they could go "ah, yes, that Todd Terry song, yes, lemme hear some of their other stuff". CH would not need to be stupid about this, but they simply are not perceived by the chart-buying audience.
I seem to remember hopes from Neil or Nick that Pour Le Monde get released as a single.

I don't know about a third single. I was just thinking today that I barely listen to music on 'regular' radio anymore anyway...

I think they're efforts may be best put towards music placement in a highly watched TV show instead....

Dance music is for dancing to. Crowded House is for listening to.
I thought that too Anselm, to an extent, although you definitely can dance to a number of CH songs (old and new).

I still say, for me, the only one that I could alter a bit to a funky dance beat (and I think it would be a hit in clubs) would be Transit Lounge. Now I know you and Sara both don't like TOE (with Sara saying it is crap) so I guess me saying this about a TOE song is alright and within my rights Big Grin
