Comp mentioned "Love Is All That Remains" in the other thread and it got me thinking. We've already got a thread discussing likely/deserving tracks for the next album...the frontrunners if you will. What about some dark horse candidates, songs that didn't make the cut before but...maybe should have?

The question of resurrecting an older "passed-by" track or a demo for inclusion as a bona fide album track is always an interesting one, and there is some precedent for it actually happening ("Walking On The Spot").

So whaddya say folks! If Crowded House were going to raise one bygone Finn song from the dead, dust it off, take a look at it and say "Let's put this one on the album!" - what would be your pick?

"Convent Girls"! (Anytime I get a chance to mention this song, I do). I yelled out to Neil to play it in NYC, but all I got was a wry look of disapproval from a young lady in front. Yes, I knew it was a long shot...and from what someone posted here, not one of Neil's favorites. But who can resist that soaring chorus?? Eh?? Smiler

Agreed! Get the final lyrics sorted and put it on the new album. Putting it on the Time on Earth album would have been a little predictable anyway. Wink

I'd like to hear the band give a go at Tail of a Comet. Great song, great lyrics! Smiler

Love is All That Remains and Spirit of the Stairs: to me, these two seem more like "Neil solo" songs which is how I know them. I think I can see LIATR as a CH song, but I really have a hard time imagining SOTS as a Crowded House song. I seem to be only able to think of Neil and his acoustic playing SOTS - even the studio track version that is kicking around doesn't feel quite right to me.

However, if CH wanted to give SOTS a try, I'd be willing give it a listen or three. Big Grin
I think Crowded House considered "Spirit of the Stairs" for the Recurring Dream album or at least for the follow up to Together Alone album. They recorded a demo of it anyway so I think that makes it fair game.

"Love is All that Remains" and "Time On Earth" go hand in hand as Neil solo songs. They were both written around the same time and debuted together during a webcast promoting the One All release. Just because Neil liked the phrase "Time on Earth" and used it as an album title doesn't mean the song is right for Crowded House.

It's an interesting question what Neil will do with the songs that come to him now, that don't really "fit" the Crowded House context. Save 'em up for a future solo album? Try to adapt them to fit the CH context?

And then of course the band has stretched, has to an extent branched out, rhythmically and texturally. It will be a challenge to consolidate the musical gains they've made as a performing unit over these past two tours, while still retaining the band's unique identity and focus.

Hm. I feel like I had a point back when I started typing that. Oh well - that'll have to do!
I agree--new album; new songs. Save the leftovers to rack up some cash on the ever forthcoming Crowded House Box with rarities, demos, B - sides, etc.

Also I'd love to see a LIVE box set culled from all of the great live performances they'd done with Paul was still with them. With all of the banter. Ones that get the full production and any sonic buffing up they can do.

I believe the point of this thread was to discuss what old songs might be on the new CH album so that's what we're doing.

Neil may not live in the past but he does spend a lot of time visiting it. Of the last 4 CH shows I've attended, 90% of the material was from the original CH albums and 0% of it was from anything Neil wrote and recorded between 1996-2005. Also, of the 4 original Crowded House albums, both the debut and Together Alone included songs from Neil's Past. "I Walk Away", "Walking on the Spot", and "Catherine Wheels", for example, and those are just the ones we know about. He may have sneaked in a couple other old ones from time to time without telling anyone. My point is that there is clearly a president for this conversation.

I think it's more likely that the band will record a recent rarity than that they'll go back and record some Woodface outtakes but you really never know. After all, "Walking on the Spot" was around for a good 10 years and "Catherine Wheels" for about 15.
Personally I think one or two of his solo stuff should be rerecorded with Crowded House. Such as 'Hole in the Ice'. It would give some of those great songs more exposure.

Also one of the best Finn songs ever, for me anyway, is 'Message To My Girl'. Now thats quite an obscure Split Enz song for most people (Split Enz albums aren't available in the UK). So revisting that now would be interesting and it would do well I think. Its a classic song.

Oh, by all means, go right ahead with your useless pusuits.

None of the "old" songs are going to make it on their next CD. This is a band moving forward, not lost in the past. Every band has to play their "oldies" in concert. That's what the fans expect. Retreading old tires is best left for the rarities set.

I dont think that was very nice we are not saying they will be its just a lyrical kick about between Frenz on what stuff really they think should have made an album no one is saying we want oldies thats it! of COURSE we want to hear new stuff but old stuff is CLASSICS and always will be!
Neil and Ch are so talented and creative and we love them for this and this is songs that never made it onto album that if there were to be one which tracks unreleased would you have on an "album"
that is my gist of it, Nothing serious nor meant to be that way imho

Oh please, stop taking this all so seriously. I meant no harm in my remarks. If you took offense that's would be copping an attitude.

I think I'll start a thread, "The likelihood of Neil playing at my BBQ party in July."

You could of course start any thread you like but I think that one should go into the Neil Finn solo section of the forum. Though, unlike the current discussion, there is no precedent for anyone to believe that Neil might actually play your BBQ.

Also, when people are having a conversation about anything at all, no matter how "useless" you may think it is, it's still rude to come in and try to stomp it out with a ridiculous statement like "Neil doesn't live in the past and neither should we! Viva la actuel!"

There are plenty of threads in this forum that are little more than community daydreaming so I suggest you either try to say something a bit more constructive or save your energy for topics you actually care about.
Thank you Deb.

Then I will second the emotion and vote once more for 'Spirit of the Stairs'.

Neil mentioned to a group of us after the LA concert on Sat. night that he was just weeks from putting finishing touches on a 'rarities' album. He is well aware of his fans fondness for his 'obscure' (please don't cane me for using that word!!) works!! So... if it shows up there, bully! If it shows up on a new release, bully bully! Otherwise I will continue to watch a brief snippet on youtube and long for the day...

For sure. I've argued a couple times earlier that "Everything Is Good For You" is adapted from "Anyone Can Tell," which was then unreleased.

Anyone Can Tell was released in 1991 or 92 as a Woodface B-Side, but I agree, the main riffs to both songs are very very similar.

He's known for rewriting songs, Nails In My Feet is basically a rewrite of Fall At Your Feet for example.

Also "The Same Language As Me"
That did get released, he called it Private Universe in the end.

My votes go to Love Is All That Remains, Tail of a Comet, Convent Girls and Spirit of the Stairs.

I've always felt that Neil lifted the guitar line from "Anyone Can Tell" for "Everything is Good For You". That fact that they're probably two of my least favorite songs has always linked them in my mind anyway.

As for "Fall At Your Feet" and "Nails in My Feet" I think their similarities are far more subconscious. Like they both mention "feet", sure, but as for the chords, there are only so many progressions out there (esp when you narrow your view to just popular radio songs) so I think Neil just happened to choose a similar progression for NIMF. Same reason "Catherine Wheels" is so much like "Into Temptation" or "Four Seasons in One Day". I believe there's a concert clip where Neil actually sings a medley of all three to show how similar they are.
Yeah, there are only so many chord progressions, but those two are extremely similar, I'd lean more to a rewrite than coincidence, but I guess the Finn is the only one who knows for sure.

It's either the club CD Mood Swinging Men or Eyes of the World where Neil says he rewrote Four Seasons as Catherine Wheels. Remember it's only the chorus that was demoed during the Frenzy rehearsals in 1978, just before someone points out that Catherine Wheels predates Four Seasons Big Grin
