Comp mentioned "Love Is All That Remains" in the other thread and it got me thinking. We've already got a thread discussing likely/deserving tracks for the next album...the frontrunners if you will. What about some dark horse candidates, songs that didn't make the cut before but...maybe should have?

The question of resurrecting an older "passed-by" track or a demo for inclusion as a bona fide album track is always an interesting one, and there is some precedent for it actually happening ("Walking On The Spot").

So whaddya say folks! If Crowded House were going to raise one bygone Finn song from the dead, dust it off, take a look at it and say "Let's put this one on the album!" - what would be your pick?

"Convent Girls"! (Anytime I get a chance to mention this song, I do). I yelled out to Neil to play it in NYC, but all I got was a wry look of disapproval from a young lady in front. Yes, I knew it was a long shot...and from what someone posted here, not one of Neil's favorites. But who can resist that soaring chorus?? Eh?? Smiler
I don't remember where I have Love is All that Remains. All I can hear in my head from it is that one line!! Where do I have that song stashed away!! I want to remember how it goes!!

Otherwise, Spirit of the Stairs!

Convent Girls would be good too. Maybe what we really need is another Afterglow.

Agreed! Get the final lyrics sorted and put it on the new album. Putting it on the Time on Earth album would have been a little predictable anyway. Wink

I'd like to hear the band give a go at Tail of a Comet. Great song, great lyrics! Smiler

Love is All That Remains and Spirit of the Stairs: to me, these two seem more like "Neil solo" songs which is how I know them. I think I can see LIATR as a CH song, but I really have a hard time imagining SOTS as a Crowded House song. I seem to be only able to think of Neil and his acoustic playing SOTS - even the studio track version that is kicking around doesn't feel quite right to me.

However, if CH wanted to give SOTS a try, I'd be willing give it a listen or three. Big Grin
I think Crowded House considered "Spirit of the Stairs" for the Recurring Dream album or at least for the follow up to Together Alone album. They recorded a demo of it anyway so I think that makes it fair game.

"Love is All that Remains" and "Time On Earth" go hand in hand as Neil solo songs. They were both written around the same time and debuted together during a webcast promoting the One All release. Just because Neil liked the phrase "Time on Earth" and used it as an album title doesn't mean the song is right for Crowded House.

It's an interesting question what Neil will do with the songs that come to him now, that don't really "fit" the Crowded House context. Save 'em up for a future solo album? Try to adapt them to fit the CH context?

And then of course the band has stretched, has to an extent branched out, rhythmically and texturally. It will be a challenge to consolidate the musical gains they've made as a performing unit over these past two tours, while still retaining the band's unique identity and focus.

Hm. I feel like I had a point back when I started typing that. Oh well - that'll have to do!
