In Mike Chunn's book Stranger than fiction he mentions "Noelmania", referring to an apparent obsession for Noel Crombie among fans. How prevalent was this? I haven't been able to find any material regarding Noelmania anywhere online.

I think I recall Tim mentioning it ‘being time for a bit of Noel Mania’ when introducing the song True Colours on footage I have somewhere.
Speaking for myself, I was completely obsessed with Noel when I first discovered the Enz. I was probably about 8! Noel looked so odd, usually did move much, say anything or play anything (in the music videos at least). He tended to stand still, looking strange, then at some point he would come alive and go crazy or play the spoons. It was mesmerizing for a child!
i think a lot of people were genuinely intrigued by him. Not many bands had somebody in the band who would be on stage but not play anything! The percussion role grew over time, and then he became drummer after Mal ‘left’. But in the early years he was one of the most fascinating aspects of the band.
i do think the term Noel Mania was likely a term that the band made up themselves based on how crazy the crowds would go when Noel would do something (like play the spoons, or dance crazily) after standing like a statue with a deadpan face up to that point. The very early enz were as much about the theatre as the music, and Noel was usually the centerpiece of the theatre...
The Noel chia seed head kit is one of my favorite enz collectibles!
