Hello all,

There’s a great new ep out today called Apple Music Home Session: Crowded House, exclusively on, you guessed it, Apple Music. You can buy it for 6 dollars or so if you don’t subscribe. Well worth it, it’s dreamy and wonderful. Worth the price alone for the cover of The Church’s Under the Milky Way. Not sure if it’s the full band. It could easily just be Neil, Elroy and Liam. You can specifically hear Liam on Start of Something and Elroy singing on Private Universe. And these are full productions just done in an acoustic style. Sparse drums if any. There are some good vocal overdubs and double tracking. Go get it!

Cheers,

MD

Thanks for the heads-up Matt.

Just listened to the EP and here are my thoughts:

1. $6 for 5 songs? Sure, I’ll take it; especially because we get to hear alternative versions of 3 songs from Dreamers Are Waiting (I love the album). In terms of what to call these alternative versions or how to best describe them: I think they exist somewhere between demo and a webcast (Fangradio) versions of the songs.

2. I could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure this is all Neil; I can’t hear any trace of anyone else playing or singing along with Neil except for maybe Sharon on ‘Start of Something’ (I don’t think it’s Liam).

3. the ‘Leonard Cohen’ version of Private Universe… there’s a lot to unpack here… I’m just not sure how much the world (and we fans) needed ‘this’ version of this amazing song. Don’t get me wrong, I am definitely grateful and appreciative of ANY new music from Neil and Co. I literally put my money where my mouth is, and pay for it when they release anything. All I can say is that I hope Neil had fun recording this version, thats the nicest thing I can think of saying.

4. The cover of The Church song; this song might have a personal connection to Neil and others, and there is nothing wrong with this stripped down version. Its a short, fairly simple campfire version of 3 chord song that sounds good.

On a related note, I’ve listened to a few of Tim’s songs with Phil Manzanera, and I’ve felt the same way about some of them: why?
Whereas the Forenzics songs (just like DAW) sound amazing to me.

Maybe they’re getting old, maybe I’m getting old; I guess we’re all getting old…

I actually thought it was Neil, Liam and Elroy (doing things other than drums). Some backing vocals don’t sound like Neil to me.

I bought it blind and, eh, not really into it. The one track I feel is worth listening to is Under the Milky Way. It’s a fine cover, not amazing or anything but I love the original track and Neil does a good job. The others are closer to Neil’s loungey solo style which I don’t like.

I think last year's Finn/Manzanera album sounded incredible. Why? They're two old mates who wanna have fun and record together again. I think it's great that after a ten year break between studio albums that Tim's going to have soon released four in a year. We've still got ForENZics in February, Finn/Manz 2 in March and a Tim/Andy White album soon too. Not bad for an old rocker. Go Tim I say

This is terrific! Just the sort of thing I've been hoping for (more please!). Though I agree that it is unclear if the band is involved in any of these performances or if it's just Neil playing about in his studio.

Always happy to have another Neil Finn cover song! I'll add it to my Neil Finn covers album, which I like to call Don't Dream It's Covers! What am I missing any (well recorded, studio performances, of cover songs)?

Sexual Healing
Billie Jean
Throw Your Arms Around Me
Waiting in Vain
Two of Us (with Liam)
I Can See Clearly Now
Women (Make You Feel Alright)
Everybody's Talkin' at Me
Blue Smoke
Catch The Wind
Love Song
It's Love
She Belongs to Me
Under the Milky Way

It's a good listen!

Oh and “She’s Not There”. Forgot the obvious one. Any good covers on Fangradio? I suppose that’s a separate thread.

at any rate, still loving this little release. Yeah, Private Universe is strange, but it s fun to hear a different take on it. There are already a million live and acoustic versions out there so didn’t need another straight forward take.

It’s cool to hear them still turning these songs over, looking for new angles on them. With touring being such an uncertain proposition these days it’s good to find more ways of keeping the songs in our ears.

In general with these sorts of projects it’s the songs which sound the most different to the originals which benefit the most, and to that end I think that’s a really nice take on Playing with Fire. It’s a shame they didn’t do To The Island in this mode, the acoustic take they did on Fangradio ages ago was really good.

That “you won’t come out…” bit in Bad Time Good has a very classic CH feel to it, I can imagine Paul at the front on his snare singing that top line.

There's a Moon River cover floating around, but it's a rough live bootleg.

I do recall a cover version of Hall and Oates Maneater…. I can’t remember if it was on Fangradio or if Liam played it on one of his broadcasts. From memory I think they pre-recorded it rather than playing it live on the broadcast. My memory is pretty foggy on the exact details. I just remember hearing it and quite enjoying it…

EMI tells me it’s on Apple Music in 165 countries, so it should be there in The Netherlands. It’s not on iTunes anywhere, they say.

Thanks Jaffaman! I didn't manage to find it in the Music app on my iPhone, but succesfully found it on the app on my mac. I don't have an Apple Music subscription, and apparently you can't search the database using the music app on your iphone. I tried googling it and followed this link https://music.apple.com/us/alb...-house-ep/1601743359. On my iPhone, I got the message that it's not available in my country, whereas on my laptop I did get access to the content. Mysterious ways!

Apple have a 3 months free subscription with option to delete anytime. I’m sure there are still recording options available 😉 As for Under the Milky Way anyone else hear Natalie Imbruglia’s Torn running through it?
Private Universe to me has a Nick Cave Crossed with Neil Young’s poetic stance. Really like these home sessions. Have been listening to them almost every evening to unwind. Maybe release through Fangradio?  It has been a while Neil and co 😊

ever grateful for the little surprises...
