If you just check a few posts back, someone else asked that very question. My thoughts were that it was one of the guitars that neil has picked up over the years, or as Neil recently tweeted a gift from sharon for christmas. I am positive that he never takes it on the road with him as ive never seen him play it live ever. My guess is that it is one of his many guitars that floats around roundhead.

Zombie post I've been meaning to reply to for years, but forgot my login credentials.

The guitar and bass in the Split Enz "Straight Old Line" clip are a Daion Savage guitar and matching bass. These were made in Japan in the 1980s and have been out of production for many, many years. You can still pick them up on eBay for around $350-$450. I've read some really good reviews.

Finally glad to be able to get that off my chest :-)

that Kay probly sounds amazing recorded but i can imagine it would be awful for performing with on a stage under lights and variable temperature and humidity.

Who knows, it may actually be dead reliable ! A rough Les Paul copy. I'd love to know how many guitars Neil actually owns !

Some of the Kays were actually well made. They weren't all nasty cheap things sold at  Woolworths. Even if it was a poorly made guitar in the first place, it could have been owned by someone who renovated it. I don't know guitars as well as basses, but looking at it, it looks like one of the better ones to me.

I wonder if it has single coil pickups made to look like humbuckers.

Interesting thread here: http://www.thegearpage.net/boa...wthread.php?t=660648

There is some really unusual looking instruments if I google on Kay Les Paul. But, there seems to be some family resemblence between Neil's guitar and a 1960s Kay Value Leader guitar.

Not one of Neil's, but a tribute to his work. I got myself a mint 2012 gold top Gibson Les Paul 70's Tribute (a modern reissue of the 70's Les Paul Deluxe Neil plays) for my birthday and decided to add a small customisation as a homage to one of my favourite Crowdies songs

The original pickup selector switch plate: Rhythm/Treble

Original

The custom replacement switch plate: Whispers/Moans

Replacement switch plate

i got a replacement made in the aged cream colour too:

All three

Hi everyone.  Can someone tell me what make/model guitar Neil plays in Don't Dream it's Over video?  The headstock looks like a Taylor, but I'm probably wrong.  If anyone can help me I'd really appreciate it.  Thanks!

He was playing a Yahama thin bodied sunburst acoustic with cutaway around the time. Pretty sure that's what it is - it looks like a Yamaha APX500III - actually not an expensive guitar these days.

He's also seen with what looks like a red Fender Telecaster later in the video - not the one he was using around the Woodface era though which has since been passed down to Liam, one I haven't seen him with elsewhere.

Look closely. The red Telecaster is actually a Yamaha solid body. You’ll also notice Nick is playing a Yamaha BB bass.... I always wondered if it was a Yamaha product endorsement.

Interesting. Bulk discount from Yamaha? Freebies?
Neil must have liked the acoustic enough to hold onto it for a while.
He had a preference for those thin bodied acoustics in the early days of the band - the other one he generally played looks to be a Kramer Ferrington. It's the black one to be seen on their second appearance on The Joan Rivers Show in 1987 and often on that first tour. He was still using it during the Temple Of Low Men tour - see the performance of "Sister Madly" at the State Theatre in Sydney in 1988. His preference seems to shift to the full-bodied Maton acoustics around the Woodface era, though I think he had a Takamine or two for a while - Tim certainly did in the early 90's.
Neil also has that lovely custom built Danny Ferrington acoustic as seen on MTV Unplugged but it's not an instrument he's ever taken out on tour that I'm aware of.

Hi there,

Just wondering if anybody would be able to offer a little more info on Neil's Maton acoustic.

I know it's a Custom EGB808. I'm trying to decide which is the closest looking standard-issue Maton. The 'Artist' model seems too light in colour. Would the EGB808L be a closer comparison?

In terms of features, Matons standard artist model is closer, in terms of sound. The artist models have small microphones just inside the soundhole aswel as a pickup, althought some of neils older models wouldnt have the microphone feature. The model hes using here is his most recent one from maton i believe http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cy3lzKykXkc
The 808L is a laminated finish, but i believe neils artist is a different finish of that to the standard artists. Not by colour but what its covered in. Maton would happily re create neils acoustic for you if you wish, just mail them.

Hope this helps Smiler

From a reliable source, Neil has owned total of 5 Maton EBG808 guitars, custom made to his specs. The guitar in the clip is the second of the five, and distinctive in that it is the only one with a pickguard. This is also the guitar that Neil used in his emotional 2005 ARIA Awards tribute to Paul Hester, playong Better be Home Soon.  Neil generously donated the guitar for auction by the NZ music foundation in 2017.
