Neil + Liam- WHERE'S MY ROOM NZ dates Jan 2018

Not sure I would call them pretentious, but they are less Lennon/McCartney and more Radiohead.

I find that most of the time Radiohead actually makes pretty well-structured pop songs, really...all of In Rainbows is that way, the last two albums less so. They just layer some atmospheric weirdness on top sometimes, or use odd time signatures, etc. I’d welcome this approach from Neil (A Sigh was very much like this), but the bits I’ve heard from this tour haven’t made much of an impression.

Hard to tell listening to the recordings, but not sure I'm a fan of the rambling nature of these tracks. Hopefully the recordings will be more focused and fleshed out. I trust in Neil ...

Got the setlist for the Owaka concert (first time I've ever been able to get one!)  Actually it wasn't even in Owaka like I expected, but at Purekireki about 10km away - really just a hall out in the middle of nowhere, which was great.  My bus driver reported that many people didn't even attend the concert, but just hung around outside for the night!  Still a packed and hot hall though, even if only 2 of us took the bus provided from Dunedin.  OK onto the setlist:

  • Meet Me in the Air
  • Any Other Way
  • Four Seasons in One Day
  • Troubles
  • Hiding Place
  • Private Universe
  • Where's My Room
  • Miracle Glance
  • Listen
  • Better To Be
  • Man That Will Find You
  • Distant Sun
  • Second Chance
  • I Got You

  • Cold Feet
  • History Never Repeats

It's not on the list, but Better Be Home Soon was the last song.   I don't know if there were any other changes or omissions as it's all a bit of a blur now and many of the songs were new to me as I don't really know Liam's music other than Second Chance.  I liked the new songs, but they didn't blow my socks off or anything - it may be different when they're recorded.  Where's My Room I remember quite enjoying in parts.  As for the talking issue, we were being filmed so there were a few requests to keep it down during songs which I think helped, although I still think there was more chatter than I've ever encountered in a concert (maybe because in community halls people are used to having a chat and a catch-up?)  Anyway they really got into the Split Enz/Crowded House stuff and it was a great night.  Even the bit where our bus broke down in Balclutha on the way home.

There were no liner notes for the vinyl single - just a note to go to Neilandliamfinn.com for them (but there is nothing up as yet other than the tour details).  The vinyl does say “written by Neil and Liam Finn” on the back cover. The B side of Wheres My Room is Meet Me In the Air.

Can you share some geeky details? Label, catalogue number...

Ta muchly. Some of us like to keep a track of these things and, unfortunately, I don't live in the right hemisphere to be able to pick up a copy.

Hi Paul,

No worries - catalogue number is MAILIEN001. (NEILIAM spelt backwards!).

Other than that there really isn’t any other distinguishing information on it anywhere.

When I bought it at the show, I had no idea it was only a run of 300. I presumed it would be commercially available in time. I now wish I had thought to pick up some extra copies to make available to fellow Frenz collectors..

Yep we were annoyed there wasn't any available at merchandise stall I guess we will just have to wait. The shirt design was cool though so grabbed one for hubby

Hey Annie - I’m just curious what the T-Shirt design was?

The NZ gigs had really cool designed T-Shirts (and tea towels) but very specific to NZ (with a map of NZ and pictures f all the venues), so I’m guessing they have different ones for the Aussie shows.

I'll see if I can upload a pic of it.  it's caricature of Neil above and Liam below sharing the same body playing guitars.  Really cool.  Hubby liked it
