NEIL FINN & PAUL KELLY UNVEIL LIVE CD & DVD

9 October, 2013

Staff Writer

Good news for the lucky patrons who caught the spellbinding Neil Finn and Paul Kelly collaborative concert in early 2013, and amazing news for those who missed out, the Aussie music legends announcing a live DVD, blu-ray, and double-CD of their show at the Sydney Opera House.

The release is called Goin’ My Way, a live recording of the reimagining of some of Australia’s best and well-known tunes in the tour that kicked off on Saturday 16 February earlier this year and played to a total of 100,000 fans Australia-wide.

Mixed by Bob Clearmountain – who has worked with Bruce Springsteen – with the concert DVD directed by VMA-winning director Paul Goldman of Suburban Mayhem fame, the live DVD, blu-ray and 2CDs will feature the reinvention of songs like Into TemptationFour Seasons In One Day and Don’t Dream It’s Overfrom Finn’s repertoire, and Dumb ThingsHow To Make GravyBefore Too Longand more from Kelly’s coveted career.

Neil Finn and Paul Kelly have been friends since 1980, always discussing a potential collaboration on stage, Goin’ My Way also seeing guitarist and Kelly’s nephew Dan Kelly, drummer and Finn’s son Elroy Finn, guitarist and bassist Zoe Hauptman also join the fray, with former Split Endz spoon-player and now art director Noel Crombie creating visuals for the tour and release.

Goin’ My Way will be released Friday 8 November through EMI Music Australia, with preorder from the tour’s website – available as a stand-along DVD, blu-ray or 2CD, or in the Limited Edition Deluxe that includes all three releases.

I did some research and it looks like that as long as the Bluray is encoded Region ABC then it should be playable all over the world.  If it's encoded just Region B, like some Australian Blurays, than those of us in the US (Region A) are screwed.  I emailed the sellers.  I'll let you know when/if I hear back.

You should be able to play it on your computer.  That's how I play the Split Enz DVD and the Out of the Bag DVD.  Yeah, I know that sucks.  What I also do sometimes is connect my computer to my TV so that I am able to watch these DVDs on my TV.

Not good enough!  If I'm going to pay US$70 to purchase and ship the deluxe version, then I need to know that I will be able to watch the Blu-ray!

Some years ago, I was able to find (in the US) a very inexpensive DVD player that would play all DVD formats.  I doubt the model I bought years ago is still available, but some googling should help you, as that's how I found mine.

I ordered the deluxe version.  I don't have a Blu-Ray player (don't really see the need for one), but the deluxe version was equal to the price of the CD set + the DVD.  I can give the Blu-Ray disc to a friend who is a fan, who also has a Blu-Ray player.

DVD usually 99% can be played on your computer ...BluRay though not so sure. I know for our Aussie blu ray player we had a chip added so it plays ALL blu rays worldwide...(best $70 we ever spent) .....so not sure about the blu ray working elsewhere....

My experience with a Blu-ray player built into a computer does not allow me to hack into it and change the region code.  That means I can purchase any Blu-ray of my choice here in Australia and it will work but can't ship discs from US or Europe.

Can't see any difference between the content of DVD and content of Blu-ray on the website so fans outside of Australasia shouldn't miss out on any part of the show by watching the DVD instead of the Blu-ray.

I have a sneaky suspicion that this show is the same one that was broadcast online via webcast back in March.

Hmm. I bought the Split Enz DVD off of E-bay and couldn't get it to play on my laptop (fairly new one) or my PS3. I'm tech-impaired, may have to have another go at it.

It could have something to do with the software that you are using to play the DVD.  I just bought a new computer last December and I initially had problems until I upgraded the software.   Now it plays fine.  I am using Cyberlink PowerDVD.  I hope that helps.

Here's a reply I got from the site pre-orders are on (GetMusic)

so hopefully they're on the ball

I can't personally guarantee it mind you, just passing on what they told me

Thanks for getting in touch

Both the DVD and Blu-Ray are region free (Region 0) and can play on players from any region.

Yeah same from us from the actual company too.. they say both region free.... I've asked them to double check just to make sure .......!

Any idea if the DVD and cd will be released or available anywhere else? The shipping to the US from Australia is $23. Just curious. I might end up buying it from the site anyway, it was that good a show!

There's no way they would release this in the USA.  Not enough people know who Paul Kelly or Neil Finn are and it's not like their tour came to the US.  I know shipping to America is ridiculously priced, but this truly was a great show.  I would not spend $23 on shipping for anyone other than Neil Finn!

Ok, don't know what happened when I tried it earlier, but it plays fine on my laptop. Thanks for the encouragement or I might not have tried it again; I am quite enjoying the dvd.

So happy to hear that you were able work things out and are now able to play your DVD.  "Out of the Bag" and the Woodface documentary are also great purchases if you are so inclined.
