While we're at it, let's see who people really DON'T rate too. So who are the ones you like the least, the ones which get all the plaudits but who you think aren't quite worthy of it?

1. Most overrated singer
2. Most overrated guitarist
3. Most overrated bassist
4. Most overrated keyboardist
5. Most overrated drummer
6. Most overrated multi-instrumentalist

Anybody else that you feel is outstandingly poor on their instrument (in a category not mentioned above), give them a name check here.

OK, taking the plunge here and jumping in first...

1. David Gray
2. Stevie Ray Vaughan
3. Adam Clayton
4. Keith Emerson
5. Ringo Starr
6. Mike Oldfield

1. well i dont hear a lot of people going "now that's a great singer" when the singer is actually not that great, so i've repaced this with
Most overrated songwriter - kurt cobain. of course he's talented, but he was so overrated, he couldn't even take it himself.
2. Most overrated guitarist - Jimi Hendrix. Hendrix is really awesome, but i'm sooooo sick of hearing people butchering Little Wing in the Berklee practice rooms.
3. Most overrated bassist - Paul McCartney! Except, he played that awesome bassline for Taxman. No, wait, that was George!
4. Most overrated keyboardist - Vangelis
5. Most overrated drummer - Charlie Watts.
6. Most overrated multi-instrumentalist...Not sure what to put for this one. I guess Mike Oldfield isn't that great.

For those of you thinking of putting Ringo in as the most overrated drummer, I recommend you listen to something like Ruby Tuesday by the Stones, and then the Anthology version of Don't Pass Me By, and then you can put Charlie Watts down. Razzer
Funny how someone's favourite can be someone else's least favourite.

So Anselm what don't you like about Keith Emerson? Wink Nah actually I can probably answer that - just like any of the progressive bands of their era, they can flat boring very often. But at his very best he (for me) plays very inspiring and uplifting lines. But I can definitely see why he'd get on someone's nerves. No offence taken.
The only person I feel really strongly about right now as an over-rated (non-)musician is Jennifer Lopez. Puh-leeze! I always thought she was a wonderful actress, but she should no more have started a recording career than Eddie Murphy (remember "My Girl Wants To Party All the Time?" lol). All her spoiled, whiney, Selena-fantasy, ex-'hood rat gyrations have made me lose ALL respect.

If there weren't videos, and/or if sex didn't sell, nobody would've ever given that voice a second listen.

Off my soapbox, now. Back to your regularly scheduled thread about actual music...

Couldn't agree with you more! She is so appealing as an actress, I don't really get why she has to do this music thing. She is going to over-expose herself so much that no one is going to want to hear about her again! God, and now her and Ben Affleck, is there ever a time when she is not being flashed across the tv screen? I am sick of hearing about her, she should keep some of her private life private IMO...
I can only think of people who regard themselves as musicians but in reality are nothing more than polished puppets -

Christina Aguliera
Britney Spears
Jennifer Lopez
Mariah Carey
Justin Timberlake
Backstreet Boys
N'SYNC (did I get the apostrophe in the right place?)
etc etc etc

I especially can't stand the overuse of the word "diva". . . .
but, but.......I DO want to party all the time! lol

1. Most overrated singer
Bruce Springsteen....if I hear "Born in the USA"
one more time, I'm gonna lose it.

2. Most overrated guitarist
See above. Double it.

3. Most overrated bassist
Sting.

4. Most overrated keyboardist
Steve Winwood.

5. Most overrated drummer
No such thing....drummers never get the credit
they deserve!

6. Most overrated multi-instrumentalist
Anybody that plays mutiple instruments ROX!
1. Most overrated singer - bono
2. Most overrated guitarist - the edge, santana
3. Most overrated bassist - les claypool
4. Most overrated keyboardist - dunno!
5. Most overrated drummer - max weinberg
6. Most overrated multi-instrumentalist - umm...prince. he used to be good. he's gone majorly downhill
Most over-rated singer: Robert Plant (sounds like a bloody girl)
Most over-rated guitarist: The Edge (he CANNOT ROCK)
Most over-rated bassist: John Entwistle (what was so great about him?)
Most over-rated keyboardist: Tony Banks (should have let Steve Hackett dominate more)
Most over-rated drummer: Ringo Starr (he wasn't revolutionary at all!)
Most over-rated multi-instrumentalist: Paul McCartney (this is why you get other people into a recording studio!)

I agree with everyone's overratedness of the U2 personnel... but Ross, WTF are you doing! Can't agree with you on the above two... John Lennon? ha!
And as a musician, Sheila E. is great... as far as the music she has recorded, not interested, so that may be what it's about. About 10 years ago, I saw her in a jazz club, supporting her father and brother - a real family band, and she has major skills...

How could you? These are my favorite artists. Roll Eyes
Let me assure everyone here: I was not talking about John Lennon!!

I was referring, in fact, to the the guy who decemated Lennon's (& McCartney's) songs in the movie "Across The Universe", as Tracy guessed. I could handle most of it but when he started in on "Revolution" I had to leave the theatre! Sorry - I guess you couldn't really call him overrated since nobody knows his name ! I think it's Jim something.

As for the movie it was pretty good. My brother and nephew wliked it better than me. There was some good singing from the other cast members. The female lead did a great job - in particular with "If I Fell", and the one who played her brother was good too. Also "I Am The Walrus" was really nice, sung by **** (don't want to spoil it if you haven;t seen the movie).

As for Sheila E; I am sorry to all her fans out there. Damn I knew this topic would get me in trouble.

This was the first movie I've seen in a theatre in about half a decade - other than "Firehouse Dog" which I saw with my 4-year-old daughter.

As for TV I am illiterate; i occasionally watch Jeopardy, and recently caught an episode of "Project Runway" which i enjoyed. Thst's sbout it.

Jim Sturgess

I had trouble finding people to fill the categories. For me overrated seems to be also those ones who have over-exposure or have just become annoying because of being there all the time. It's like that funny phrase. "How can I miss you if you don't go away?"

One that I don't get is Mariah Carey, because while she does have a good voice, I just don't like her whistle tones. It's not that great in my opinion because it can only be used in ornamental settings and not for singing actual words.

(what a silly name too!)

Not as stupid as Bono or The Edge. The edge of what I've always wondered... the edge of being able to play Big Grin ?

Anyone seen Bill Bailey's impersonation of a catastrophic even at a U2 concert? Gets me everytime. It's on the Part Troll DVD if anyone is interested... I think he loathes U2 almost as much as I do Big Grin
I've sung along to many a Madonna song but I don't understand why "everything" she has done is talked on and on about like it changed the world or saved lives. She was (I meant was) a good singer with catchy lyrics, outrageous costumes, great dancers, and ridiculous scandals but so what. She didn't event pop music or change it or re-invent it or make it better in my opinion.

Coldplay are boring. I don't mind a couple of songs but what's the buzz? Are they really more popular now because what's his name is married to an American movie star? Maybe, maybe not but the constant publicity doesn't hurt selling records.

I've always thought that Justin Timberlake's star rose a little higher when he was going out with Britney Spears. Of course he took off even after he broke off that relationship, but it gave him a boost and a half. Again, I don't doubt he has talent and lots of it. But seriously, what separates him from so many other good looking, good singing young men out there? I watched some of his live concert the other night. As much as it was okay, I'm still waiting to be entertained with great music.

I've sat and listened to all the music of the people I've listed here.
No one bores me to tears more than Delta Goodrem. She's always getting the big write ups in our newspapers. She's lauded as being the greatest treasure we have next to Kylie Minogue, yet I find her music nauseating and lacking in inventivness, charm and excitment. Sure it's nice and she can sing. The new Australian Idol song was released this week and everyone says it's a dog yet I would compare it to all of Delta Goodrem's stuff. I don't understand why she gets all the accolades for the kind of music she's putting out.

This is all of course, only my humble opinion but I think that's what over-rated is.
Speaking of Kylie Minogue, there's someone I feel is highly over rated. To me she's nothing more than candy pop drivel with a voice to match.

But, she's not very popular here in the States, so I guess it's more of an Australian pride thing, and I get that. But, Australia has much better acts to be proud of!
My list of over-rated musicians? Easy:
The Velvet Underground
Artic Monkeys (does anyone outside the UK give a toss about these tossers?)
Jeff Buckley (only one album - what's to say he wouldn't have screwed up?)
Nick Cave
Radio Birdman (Who the hell let this bunch of idiots into the ARIA hall of fame? Looking for credibility maybe? Try again)
Patti Smith
The Kaiser Chiefs
The Killers (that moron that masquerades as their lead singer needs a good kick up the backside)
Red Hot Chili Peppers (I've got their albums but now getting the suspicion they're the same album re-jigged)
Beyonce (face it, she is NOT that good)
Mariah Carey (ditto)
Alicia Keys (she is a talent - pity her music is so beige)
Wilco (Boring, really boring - but then again so is Lambchop)
Bob Dylan post 1976 (apparently his latest stuff is'phenomenal' - why? Who are you kidding?)
Rolling Stones in concert (Great band on record - bloody lousy on stage and always has been)
Split Enz (Judd era) (Perhaps controversial to put it on a Frenz forum but the way some older fans carry on, you'd swear Neil Finn did the same to the Enz as Phil Collins did to Genesis - yep, more successful and better songs. How dare they!)

Oh, wow! This is a brilliant observation, especially because for me at least, it rings true! I would have never thought of it this way without you, but now that it's out there... cool. Big Grin

I may have to come back later for my own bit of over-rated. I was trying to approach it as either a group or solo artist that is really popular, but I just dont' "get" it for some reason. As a bass player, I'm tired of hearing about the "god" Jaco Pastorius, but I doubt that's really the same thing.
stop dissing U2, people! Smiler Razzer

listen to their early stuff, not all that post POP stuff:
Unforgettable Fire
War
are some of my faves - totally different to the commercial stuff that people probably know them for.
If you have listened to their early stuff and don't like it, then Eeker

Some of my overratted people:
The Verve (& Richard Ashcroft ) - the rolling stones wrote their best song
Elvis
Robbie Williams (charismatic yes, but his songs are woeful)
Guns n Roses - like Slash's guitar work, but there was something so 80's and commercial about them when they came out it was hard for me to take them seriously (Sorry G&R fans)

They are the most unboring musicians on your list, & pioneers of their respective genres!

What next? You'll be saying that Al Martino couldn't sing, & Liberace can't play piano!

Has anyone mentioned Darren Hayes or John Farnham yet?

Well I know what musical side of the fence you're on Cornelius! Big Grin

I do find the Velvets boring. Their music simply doesn't resonate with me. Having said that I do like "Waiting For The Man" but have no inclination to buy that first album. I suspect that people who do are a bunch of posers - much like Lou Reed and John Cale actually.

Radio Birdman? Crap. Nick Cave? Some of his stuff is good but jeez, you have to go through a lot of tosh to get to it. And Nick can be crushingly boring as well. His speech at last year's ARIA showed how much of a pompous twat he is.

Darren Hayes? Good sturdy pop and nothing more. John Farnham? No doubt a good voice, no doubt he hasn't a clue what to do with it.

By the way Al Martino can't sing and Liberace can't play piano - because they're both dead now. But back in the day...
