Lightsleeper download

I'm really enjoying the album, although it's not feeling like a "major statement," which I don't think it was intended to be. It's just really nice, interesting, great vibe, experimental and we're spoiled by all the Finn-related music released recently so no complaints from me.

Is it just me, or do many of the songs seem to go by very quickly? Perhaps it's because of the a sense of length and gravitas attached to most of the "Out Of Silence" tracks, as well as the more extended "jam" versions they've played live - but the whole thing really felt like it went by fast. Maybe the few longer songs are just making the 3 minute ones SEEM shorter. Either way, I absolutely applaud and appreciate it when the Finns stretch out and try new things. This'll be a big grower.

I've been reading that the opening track was written by Neil for Liam's wedding and "Listen" may be a Neil solo composition (which he's played live solo before, as well). I downloaded it, so no writing credits, but does anyone know what the songwriting credits ARE for each track on the album?

I’ve been listening to it on endless repeat all afternoon and am loving it.  It is tranquil and soothing and the perfect album for a lazy summer afternoon.  It is definitely something I needed to experience as a whole and not piecemeal here and there.

I like this album so much more than Out of Silence. (as predicted by myself and also by Sugar Mouse about a year ago!). Listen sounds like it could be on Out of Silence.  But I think what has made the difference here is Listen is the only song in that style on this album.  There is a great variety of sounds on this album, which holds my interest to keep listening over and over.  And there are beats!

Is there any chance someone could post a picture of the liner notes or is that against all copyright rules?

I live in Cambodia at present and can only buy downloads therefore missing out on my usual habit of studying all involved in whatever the latest Finn project might be.

Enjoying the album.

Download is available now - but no "Troubles"! Have to say that's pretty poor form from the label, especially as that extra track is what probably persuaded a number of us to buy the vinyl. The LP itself gives no indication that this is a bonus track, so anyone would reasonably assume it should be included in the download.

Now the download is available but "Troubles" is not included. Ugh!

Quote the website: "Double LP format comprises 2 x black vinyl in a gatefold sleeve with download card, plus bonus track ‘Troubles'".

Think it's reasonable to expect that "Troubles" would be included in the download and I am sad that it is not as it was one of the main reasons for buying the vinyl. Also, I've been listening to the vinyl nonstop and "Troubles" is a great song that easily could have been included in the album so it's definitely worth having!

If anyone gets an MP3 of "Troubles" please private message me. I would love to have that. I bought the vinyl as well and am disappointed that the download doesn't include the bonus track.

I asked above, but I'm all digital these days and would love to see the writing credits on the album. Are they ALL Neil/Liam co-writes?

I believe Neil wrote Listen and Island of Peace. Liam wrote Anger Plays a Part. The rest I think are co-writes.

Thank you. That was my assumption - can anyone with a physical copy confirm?

Mine will be arriving next week if you don't get an answer before then. Would also love an mp3 of Troubles.

I checked the liner notes. Neil wrote "Island of Peace" and "Listen", while Liam wrote "Anger Plays A Part".  Neil/Liam/Sharon/Elroy wrote "Meet Me In The Air". The rest of the songs were written by Neil/Liam.

Thank you for the response! I've heard people say "Anger" sounds like a Liam song, but to me it really has a real Neil feel - like CH demo that never made an album. Either way, very interesting. I'm curious why they would include ANY songs not cowritten, although, I suspect they chose them for flow and coherency. I haven't hread "Troubles," but I'm assuming it's a N/L cowrite, as well.

Vinyl says that "Troubles" is a Neil/Liam song. I read online that "Troubles" was the one song that elicited some significant disagreement between father and son.

The album really needs “Troubles” if for no other reason than to shift the balance of songwriting and singing back towards Neil a bit. Without it the album comes off as a bit too Liam heavy, IMHO.

Do you mean in terms of Liam singing more than Neil or in terms of songwriting influence? To me, I hear a fairly equal blend, if not Neil jumping out a little bit more as I'm SO familiar with his work that all his little touches permeate the album. Neil also has been in such an experimental place since "Intriguer," that I wouldn't have been surprised if it had been a very odd Neil solo album with almost the exact same songs on it (without Liam singing as much). I'm just curious in what way you it feel Liam heavy. I suppose, even though I own all Liam's albums, I haven't really listened to them enough to have a sense of his individual style.

It's almost as if once and since Neil began writing for and eventually took over Split Endz and with his more melodic, classic "Neil Finn" songs, EVERYBODY in the Finn family took that cue, including Tim, and started finding their own styles as artists using Neil's as a foundation. Once Crowded House hit, that really became what's been defined as the general "Finn" musical approach, which Neil has, since, expanded upon and experimented with more and more.

I do think songs like "Anger Plays a Part", "Any Other Way", and "Hold Her Close" are classic Liam Finn songs that would fit well on his albums. I hear Neil helping with production and song craft on those, but I don't think they would have sounded substantially different if Liam had recorded them on his own.

I can see that. It's funny, though, because, as I mentioned earlier, "Anger" sounds a LOT to me like an unused Neil demo. It has his sense of melody to my ears, although, as I also mentioned, Neil's sense of melody has sorta "infected" the whole Finn family and, not being overly familiar with Lima's solo work, I wouldn't be surprised if Liam's developed a natural ability to go into that territory.

Completely agree that there is a Finn family songwriting style.  I thought that when I heard Tim's album The Conversation, which now sounds a lot like the musical sibling to Out of Silence.  Neil is such a genius when it comes to melody and chord changes. It's truly staggering how seemingly effortlessly he creates emotion through simple chord changes. I'm sure it takes a ton of work on his end, but it seems so effortless when you hear the songs play out.

As far as the new album goes, I hear it as a fairly equal songwriting effort between Neil and Liam but I do notice that Neil seems to be tailoring his songs to be more experimental and more in Liam's wheelhouse. Thus, the album does come across as more of a Liam album than a Neil album. I see that some critics (such as Allmusic) have criticized the album for being too Liam-focused and shying away from Neil's strengths.  I think that's an unfair criticism as those elements are there but the listener has to dig a little deeper.

That being said, my only "critique" of the album is that I wish "Listen" had been included on Out of Silence (along with "Never Return"), and perhaps another Neil/Liam song taken it's place. I've created my own "Out of Silence" playlist that includes a bunch of songs that, to me, would have bit nicely on that album. Either way, I'm beyond thrilled with the new album and can't wait to continue to explore the songs.

I think Lightsleeper is an equally divided work between Neil and Liam, meaning that I don’t believe either one of them could have come up with it on his own.  To me, it is the perfect marriage of both of their strengths.  Liam’s soundscapes and Neil’s melody/current fascination with string arrangements.

This album sounds like Finns mixed with Thievery Corporation.  That, to me, is a great thing!

Yes - I pre-purchased the vinyl. As far as I know, "Troubles" is not on CD. I have read elsewhere that it is a "demo" version and only added to the LP to enable three songs per side.

Anyway, things have worked out OK for me. I just heard today that I'm the winner of a competition run by JB Hi Fi and will receive some framed signed lyrics and a copy of the "Where Is My Room" 7" single.

Can I also add the obligatory request for a Private Message if anyone is inclined to be generous with an mp3 copy of "Troubles"?

Congratulations David on your win. Any relationship to the Goldsmith B&B in Gippsland?
