To the fans who were going to the now cancelled Crowded House concerts, were you expecting or hoping to hear the lap steel? I don't know if anyone in the current lineup can play it or they could have got a touring musician to play it.

During the short time the musical instrument has been played in CH (2 and a bit albums and in concerts around 1993 onwards) -

2. Did you like it?

3. Did it sound Crowdie in your opinion? Did it improve songs played live which didn't have it on the album? For example, When You Come.

Had you seen the instrument before?

I hope to get some people's thoughts. I posted something like this on Facebook and got some enlightening opinions 🙂.

(Stay safe).

Hi Thom Bullock

Thanks for your reply 🙂.

"I am sure Liam will learn the parts if the band decided they’re needed."

After some thought, I reckon it would be good they keep the lap steel in future. For some continually.

"I loved the combination of Mark on lap steel and Neil on acoustic guitar on When You Come and Private Universe. Neither have worked quite as well since Neil started playing electric guitar..."

I agree. Their is harmony with the acoustic guitar and the lap steel. Added the earthy sound to Private Universe. Maybe Neil got tired of playing the acoustic guitar.

I think When You Come might go back to the original keys with Mitchell in the band.

I’ve actually disliked renditions of Distant Sun and Private Universe since Neil started playing them on electric guitar (It’s Only Natural likewise). So I’m actually more concerned about him continuing on that trend, especially with Liam likely playing electric too, so how much room would that leave for Mitchell Froom’s keyboards in the mix?

The use of lap steel (Private Universe, When You Come, Kare Kare, Catherine Wheels, Help is Coming and others) is very connected to Mark Hart for me. Because I dislike the decision to not include him in Crowded House I’m very hesitant in looking forward to hearing the above songs wìth lap steel.

I'm assuming you liked the lap steel then 🙂!

If 'Help is Coming' was performed live without the lap steel... it would sound very bare I think is the word.

My understanding from your quote above is 'Lap Stell = Mark Hart'. Therefore: Kare Kare - No Mark Hart = no lap steel.

I just think some people who would be introduced to CH by friends would be missing out on a unique sound 🙂.

1. I sure do!

2. True.

I love the lap steel on the songs you've already mentioned, and in my head it's a very Crowdies sound.  I really wouldn't mind if someone else played it (Liam probably) in the upcoming shows. Why would I - if they can pull it off, go for it!

I have a feeling, with Liam in the mix, we'll get more acoustic guitar from Neil in the future. See the DDIO live from home version, and the shows Neil and Liam did together last year.
