I want to get some home recording software for my new laptop (PC), but I'm a bit stuck. I'm not that technically minded, so I'm concerned that it would be a waste to spend hundreds of pounds on something like Sonar as I'm unlikely to get the most out of it. Is there a good, relatively cheap option anyone can suggest? It'll need to be able to record audio input and have a decent selection of MIDI sounds (unless someone can explain how to get good ones from somewhere that can be easily imported). Something that's pretty easy to understand and work with would be good too.

Not sure about the MIDI sounds (I don't use them or really quite understand what they are) but I used to use quite a bit a program called "Reaper". Was fantastic at laying down takes onto the computer and editing later. From my understanding it is free too!

Edit:

I'm almost 100% certain Reaper can import MIDI tracks as well. Well maybe 95% :P
