i was looking at the www.songmeanings.net as found by griggs groupie and the following was said about FOL:

quote:
I have heard numerous theories about this song, most say that the lyrics are about Neil Finns lover for music, in particular his guitar...His 'fingers of love' strum his guitar.

However, Im sorry to disappoint, but off the air (my brother is a leading DJ at a Sydney radio station) Neil Finn told my brother the song was about masturbation, and it was written when he was smoking weed...But he likes the idea of the guitar thing, so often goes along with it.
very interesting dont u think?

[and please moderators dont close this topic beacuse i mentioned drugs and sex in the same sentence. thank you Smiler ]

Maybe Neil really did say that masturbation bit. It wouldn't be the first time he's talked about sex with DJs. The thing is, he's got a great sense of humor, too. Perhaps he was just pulling that person's leg.

Either way, that was my favorite song from that album for years and years and years. It was only this year that I actually gave "Private Universe" and "Distant Sun" the spins they deserve. Then I smacked myself for missing those beauties.
"....and I won't be hurt, fingers of love move everywhere, and there is time yet to beautify me."

"...and i'm playing in the shallow waters laughin while a mad dog sleeps."

I thought deeply about the....self-pleasure theory behind fingers of love but the lines i posted above really don't fit into the theme on a metaphorical level.
I always perceived the song as Neil's cynical view of religion and using the "fingers of god" as an imagery of both pleasure and pain. When you look at images of Jesus in Bibles, he is generally pointing or holding his finger (pointing finger, not the middle) up to represent power or absolution.

Just a thought anyway.

This line in particular always made me think of the Jamaican reference... the mad dog (in my mind at least) would be Lester! And he's playing on the beach with him, half-paddling at the same time... which makes sense in isolation... not sure how the fingers relate to it though! Smiler

I suppose it could be Lester, but Neil writes the line as if he should be scared or in danger of the dog, I doubt he'd write this about his own. Interesting nevertheless Smiler

I always thought it was:

"And I won't look back
fingers of love move everywhere
And there is time yet
For you to find me"

But of course, this album doesn't have lyrics in the insert Frowner

Anyone know for sure?

The lyrics for all the songs on the Together Alone album were published in booklets which were included with the UK CD singles for Fingers Of Love (Parts 1 & 2).

My copy reads...

"And I won't be helped/Fingers of love move everywhere/There is time yet/For you to find me".

So Half-Full's got it about right.
hmm...really interesting.
Finn songs shouldn't be interpreted with the first impression. There are so many nuance more after hearing them a few times more.
Of course, I heard fingers of love for the first time, it was quiet clear for me: hehe our Neil is telling us about the feelings he get when there is something going on under his blanket...cough cough.

"colour is its own reward"
The song is, from my point of view, about an artist, a painter maybe about Nick.
And the fingers of love are holding a brush to paint a portrait....the singers portrait....
" I can't look up fingers of love move down"
The artists paints on the canvas and the modell has to stay at his pose

Yeap, sounds possible to me.....(hope I'm not the only one...lol)
we'll never know what the song really is about...hmm, maybe Neil isn't even sure! but here's my take on it:

fingers of love = applause

"the sound that comes to carry me across the land and over the sea" = the applause and admiration of his fans

"into waves of joy and clarity your hands come out to rescue me" = he is most at home/most himself while making music. he appreciates that there are people who love his music so much that he is able to make music his vocation (as well as his avocation)

"playing in the shallow water, laughing" = playing his music and enjoying his success

"while the mad dog sleeps" = the mad dog could represent death/failure/losing it all. that the mad dog is sleeping means that death, etc. is being held at bay but could come at anytime (hey, didn't Neil write a song about that?), but until the dog awakens Neil is going to play in the shallow water and laugh

"colour is its own reward" = making music is enough for its own sake. even without the critical and commercial success he has achieved, Neil would continue to make music because it is so much a part of who he is

that's my interpretation which, along with $3.50, will get me a double espresso which I very much need right now!
