Terrify The Ones That Love You [Crowded House] - unreleased demo from the July 1995 York St sessions.

Don't forget also played in the after show was My Darkest Day demo, an Enz era Neil solo demo from around 1983. This was only heard in partial form in Enzology. Two shots of gold.

I’m very excited about “Terrify the Ones Who Love You”; another “new” Crowded House song after we’ve been treated to so many goodies with the deluxe editions.

It’s almost a punk song, reminiscent of Split Enz’ Frenzy-era.

@Jaffaman do you know who wrote it? I wouldn’t be surprised if it wasn’t written solely by Neil.

“Terrify the Ones Who Love You” is fantastic. It sounds like they worked hard on this one, the playing is integrated and precise. The drums are not just keeping time. Strange the song just disappeared.

‘Terrify the ones that love you’ is neil trying to find energy in a song and missing by the width of a football field.

up there with ‘iris’ for bad on an industrial scale.

i do think it’s important that an artist scratches the itch on a song like this and try it out. I find it more important to know that he has the sense not to release it.

how does a guy who is so good still manage something like this that would make his mother blush. ‘Oh, it’s lovely, dear. Bit different from your usual stuff. But ... nice’

🤦🏻
😂

I for onenever need to hear it again.

I don't know for sure.

But wow, some strong reactions on this forum to this track. Most people commenting on Mixlr during the broadcasts loved it, as do I. The sudden change in tempo near the end is comic genius too. The track's always reminded me of the Jazz Numbers clip on Sesame St, sung by Grace Slick.

But hey, it's ok to not like it (sorta.) Neil didn't want it on the Deluxe Edition due to the lack of lyrics. He's just singing a nonsensical guide.

I like it. Obviously needs some work, but would have been fun live, I'm guessing. With these last couple that have come out from the York Street sessions, we have a pretty good idea what the aborted fifth album could have been. Hate the plug was pulled.

I'm guessing it is, but can Jeremy or anyone verify that this is Pete's drumming?

Related side question to Jeremy. We now have York Street demos featuring Pete on two of the three Recurring Dream "new" songs. Do you know if Not the Girl You Think You Are was demoed? If so, can you squeeze that onto the next Fangradio (pretty please!!!)?

The home demo by Neil is on the Afterglow Deluxe Edition, but there's no band demo of that song.

The songs from the York St sessions you've heard so far are:
Help Is Coming
Instinct (early version)
Anthem (with new 2015 vocal)
I Don't Know You
Taste Of Something Divine
Spirit Of The Stairs
Everything Is Good For You (early version)
Terrify The Ones That Love You

Instinct is from the 1995 York Street demos by the Peter Jones-era Crowded House line-up.

Tell Me C’Mon is the 2004 b-side of the Finn Brothers CD-single for Edible Flowers.

Rocky Raccoon (snippet) sounds like it’s also from a Fang Radio session.

I Hope I Never was recorded at Split Enz’ Enz With a Bang Tour of 1984, if I’m not mistaken at the very last show in Auckland. It’s the punk version with Neil singing lead.

Here you go:

Instinct - by Crowded House (1995 York St demo, first published on the Farewell to the World DVD gallery in 2006)

Tell Me C’Mon - by The Finn Brothers (bonus track from the Edible Flowers CD single, 2005)

Rocky Racoon (Beatles cover excerpt) 13-04-20

I Hope I Never - by Split Enz (frenzetic live version from Enz With A Bang Tour, Melbourne, 06-11-84. First published on Enzology Episode 10 in 2005.)

Thanks for the response Guy. ... and your info is of course (from the exact) spot on Jaffaman, Keeper par excellence of the archives !

... hummm hummm ... early night

Judging from the change in sound of Neil’s voice I actually think the musical performances were not live-to-air, but pre-recorded. Neil’s comments in between were live.

Edit: Neil confirmed this during the show.

And not wanting to be nitpicking but the tribute in the aftershow was for Tony Allen, who played with Fela Kuti. Tony Allen also played drums on “Dream Date” from Try Whistling This.

That's corrector musical performances being recorded. Neil did explicitly say this, because they were recorded own a new piano in another room.

The Mixer live feed displays a particular icon that shows the track is a recording.
