Enz In Unexpected places

No Chicago for me, not this year anyway. It's been three days but I'm still only able to walk down stairs backwards. (The Twin Cities Marathon is pretty hilly, unlike flat Chicago.) I will probably be doing my second marathon here in Madison, WI next May.

Last night I was pleasantly shocked to hear Six Months in a Leaky Boat in a local Wawa (a regional chain here that's like 7-11). I hung around for the whole song of course.

Today I heard "Message To My Girl" as "background music" in our local C&A-store (clothing).
This is the second song of Split Enz I ever heard in German radio or in public places after hearing "Six Months In A Leaky Boat" in the radio back in 1983, which started my being a fan of Split Enz and everything related to them.
So indeed a very rare event!

I recently heard I Got You on Rush Limbaugh's radio show. Not joking!

But that's no good reason to listen to Limbaugh.

I Got You on BBC 6 Music this morning - a SERIOUSLY unexpected place for Split Enz, all the more so because it was Huey Morgan (Fun Lovin' Criminals) who presented. Actually he sounded pretty enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the Enz. Maybe we need a thread for: Unexpected Fanz of the Enz

Celebrating my birthday at Uno's in Madison last night - took the first sip of my martini, the lights dimmed (no, really!) and "I Got You" began to play. Talk about yer birthday gifts!!

I heard a bootleg copy of True Colours playing in the little market at the bus area at Machu Picchu
next to the Urubamba River awhile back- that was rather strange. Can't remember which song was playing....but was amazed it was the Enz at 7970 feet above sea level.

my wife called me at work yesterday to tell me that our local radio station (I am in Springfield, illinois) played The Split Enz. I asked what song and she had to sing it to me as she didnt know the title. It was "i got you".
I told her thats the only Enz song I ever hear in the U.S. and she said "Now your going to have to find a more obscure band to like". Its sad that here in Illinois they are pretty obscure.
On a related note, my wife tried to not like the music I like. The other day i slipped in Tim's "Say it is so" after haviNg listened to the Enz for 3 months straight and she said "I like this, who is it?" and I said "HA!Its the lead singer of the Enz!" and she said "wow some singers DO get better with age". I didnt know if that was a compliment?

At the conclusion of the Rugby Union match in Brisbane tonight (Queensland Red vs Waratahs) - I See Red - seeing as the hometeam won.

I was at a Farmers' Field Day last year , just driving out when I Got You came on over the loudspeaker, and was just leaving for the shooting range when something so strong some over the radio.
I like hearing Finn songs, wherever I hear them they make me feel reassured and safe because I believe in their music..

I was having lunch at Mcdonalds today, and the late last night music video started playing on the TV that was playing music videos

It's been a while but on the day that our daughter was born (December 20, 1998) I heard Message To My Girl on the car radio. It's a regular feature in that Sunday sportsprogramme but this of course was very special for a young father... . Even today the song is still popular on Dutch radio.

"I Got You" on Jack FM on Tuesday. It's like the only song radio knows in North America.

On the 423 bus from City to Newtown, "My Mistake"

I think there was a triple play on possibly GOLD FM while I was grabbing all the Finn mail from Kalorama Post Office yesterday... so 3 in a row!

I FINALLY caught tim on the wiggles. wow. just wow.

I went to the local library, and I found Spellbound, which didn't surprise me too much, but then, to my delight, I also found MENTAL NOTES!
Imagine what people who randomly stumble onto Mental Notes must think.....

The Enz cropped up on BBC 2's Top Of The Pops 2 "Hallowe'en" special last night, rather bizarrely, playing I Got You.

Quite what the link between Hallowe'en and the Enz was is anybody's guess. All they had to say was that the Enz were "scary"!

I believe the show was a repeat.

Well, they were! Especially earlier in the '70s. At the time I thought of them as the "scary clown" band.

But, in amongst an hour of Hallowe'en-related material, seeing them in suits playing I Got You seemed very tame and utterly out of place. Wonderful though.

I suppose the song has lyrics about being frightened - not the strongest connection to halloween though :-)
But it was a great clip!

Last night, in Denny's (family chain restaurant), they must've had the muzak turned to 70's New Wave, because "I Got You" played, followed by Squeeze "Cool for Cats", Devo "Girl You Want", and English Beat "Mirror In the Bathroom." This is now officially my favorite Denny's location EVER.

New Years Eve at Black Cherry, a big, very "hip" rockabilly/punk/rock'n'roll nightclub party in Sydney, the first 30 seconds or so of "I See Red" to introduce a burlesque performer!
