I think Matt has forged his own niche. There will never ever be another Paul Hester but I don't think the band tried to get a replacement Paul..just a fine drummer.

God I miss Paul in so many ways, but Matt's incredibly talented always lovely to see him.

Saying all that some of my all time favourite Crowded House shows had Peter Jones on drums- that isn't to say they were my favourite PURELY because Peter J was on drums it was just a great night where all the musical pieces fitted together.

Heres a question tho .... Would neil and nick have chosen michael barker (ex john butler, ex neil finn toruing band, ex enz nz tour) to replace paul had he in fact been available at the time they auditioned and chose matt ... Barker was still in jbt at the time and presumably unavailable - the guy is brilliant and neil knows his drumming intimately... i just wonder if the boys may have in fact chosen him had he been available

Great observations, Gryph. I think you hit the proverbial nail right on the head. (Or in the feet, as it were.)
RIP Peter Jones - you were an inspirational drummer/musician and educator - and a top bloke, despite any criticism....

Sorry. Peter Jones was a boring, unimaginative drummer. And he didn't have much personality, at least not that you could discern from the audience. Nick obviously has a great deal of fondness for him for some reason - perhaps just because he was dependable and solid as a player and I'm sure he's a nice bloke - but he just seemed out of his element in CH. He was an adequate interim solution, but nothing more.

The rule here is mutual respect, especially upon someone's passing. If you don't like Peter's drumming, please start a topic about that. This one is for memories and expressions relating to his passing.

Sorry Deb, but this leave me perplexed... what do you mean with "If you don't like Peter's drumming, please start a topic about that"? Isn't it a quote, or is there something I don't understand? Confused

BTW, this asked, I'm the first to say the feelings of people mourning should be SACREDLY respected.

The 1994 BBC Radio 1 CH Fleadh Festival performance was immaculate. The first broadcast of a live gig on radio that I listened to in it's entirety, it was just as I was getting into Crowded House, and indeed getting seriously into music, and I was blown away. Apart from the majesty of the songs and the banter it was the bands tightness that 'got me going'. And just listen to how crisp the drumming is on Weather, Locked Out, Private etc.

At that time I'd not seen the boys live, so I simply devoured this performance for many, many moons afterwards. I'd recorded it onto cassette tape as it was being broadcast, from the mixing desk, and was listening to it regularly up until about 1998 when the the tape finally disintegrated. It got played at home, at camping trips, parties and at kitchens where I worked. I used to turn several Nirvanna/grunge loving friends onto CH.

Also, the '94 Jools Holland performance was during the same week as Fleadh, and I still maintain this was their/NF's best performance to date on this program. In My Command, Fingers of Love and Private Universe - performed by a tour-tight, note perfect band. The VHS recording of this show met a similar fate to the Fleadh cassette tape - worn out after countless viewings.

Afterglow's 'Help Is coming' is a track I've returned to many times, and I've always, always thought the atmosphere / feel of this recording would, at the time, have served a 5th CH studio album very well.

Peter Jones was definitely part of my being captured forever by CH and NF.

I also had the pleasure of seeing Peter and Nick perform as part of Deadstar, in a tiny Abersytwyth bar during the 90's.

Thank you Peter, and RIP x
He was always considered a band member BUT with Crowded House it takes awhile to earn your stripes *GRIN*. If the album with Peter Jones on drums would of been released I'd say it would of been more "official" for whatever that is worth.

"Hired hand" is so throw away and doesn't do anyone that has played with the band justice.
When someone puts in 100% on their instrument and committed to the gig I believe they are a band member. The music counts above pretty much everything else.
It's easy to do, some older threads do come back to haunt us.

I had a few emails asking if the band members did get to see or speak to Pete. I know Neil phoned the day I was in (so last Thurs) and Nick visited several times recently before he headed back to Ireland. Not sure if Mark was in contact or not I'd say so though. Always harder to visit when you are not in the same country.

I too had the Fleadh cassette recording and played it to death. It was an amazing gig. I did have that recording in digital format somewhere.
