Hi,

This is kinda dumb but I really need help!!

I'm trying to put together a compilation CD of Aussie themed songs, or aussie artists. This is because we are having an australian themed xmas party in our office this week.

Thing is I'm having serious problems thinking of well known aussie artists!...shocking I know!

I can get the music from file sharing software so any ideas welcomed!....maybe a top 10 or 20 australian acts?

Thanks

Neil

Hoodoo Gurus - What's My Scene?
Paul Kelly - To Her Door
Australian Crawl - The Boys Light Up
Jimmy Barnes - Working Class Man

Kylie - Come Into My World
Natalie Imbriglia - Torn

There we are - that pretty much covers it I think. All classic songs too, besides maybe the last couple Wink
Ahem...

well start off with a truckload of songs from INXS

Oh and just because you can count in Crowded House... (no arguments plz Wink )

Bands like Cold Chisel and ACDC although thats not really in my taste, Kylie Minogue would have to be played like here or not, its fitting party music.

Oh and Midnight Oil, Paul Kelly, the Cruel Sea I would thouroughly reccomend.

More recent bands/artists I would give the thumbs up to are Alex Lloyd, Powderfinger, Something for Kate, Silverchair... and umm you could try playing the Vines but that might not quite work.

So theres a taste, there is a whole lot more out there too and many of it is great stuff! So go ahead and discover Oz music- I'm sure you'll find it a rewarding experience (were not really a bunch of theiving convicts u know!). Smiler

Damn great list- almost exactly what I'd have (I was a bit too lazy to name individual songs)
yep, Bono's list was pretty good, only I'd add...

The Clouds - "Hieronymus"
Bughouse - "Devil's Brat"
Mr Floppy - "Wuthering Heights"
and something (anything) by TISM...
and natch, the party track of the century - The Swingers' "Counting the beat"

but I am just freaky Wink

Still, my compilation tapes always used to go "missing" at parties, as people would nick them for their own collections... so my taste, while not always mainstream, usually works...
Thanks guys!!

I must stress that the nature of this party is a bit of a giggle, basically we have to decorate our office in an Australian theme, and the music is just to add to that. While the neighbouring office has another theme, then the head of the division will vote on who wins!....it's just like being at school! LOL

Anyway...my CD is done and the tracklist is as follows. (Remember it's all about setting an aussie theme, rather than actual...eh...quality!lol)

I split it into sections, kinda like a jukebox!

AUSSIE LEGEND!
1, Rolf Harris - Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport
2, Rolf Harris - My Boomerang Won't Come Back
3, Rolf Harris - Two Little Boys

AUSSIE CULTURE!
4, Prisoner Cell Block H
5, Home And Away
6, Skippy The Bush Kangaroo
7, Neighbours

AUSSIE 80'S POP!
8, Kylie Minogue - I Should Be So Lucky
9, Jason Donovan - Too Many Broken Hearts
10, Olivia Newton John - Physical
11, Men At Work - Land Down Under
12, Midnight Oil - Beds Are Burning

AUSSIE CONTEMPORARY
13, Crowded House - Weather With You
14, Natalie Imbruglia - Torn
15, INXS - Suicide Blonde
16, Savage Garden - To The Moon And Back
17, Frente - Accidently Kelly Street

AUSSIE NEW MILLENNIA
18, Holly Valance - Kiss Kiss
19, Madison Avenue - Don't Call Me Baby
20, Dannii Minogue - Put The Needle On It

It's all good fun, the Rolf Harris tracks are just sooooo funny.

I'd also forgot how great that Frente track was, are they still around?...that track was the only song I remember hearing here in the UK.

Neil
Ok.....take bono's list and kill nearly all of it!!!....or at least recycle it, i think they'd go in the back compartment!

i know they're "classic" songs.....but why are all the most famous australian tunes so ****!?!? I remember when i had a 'classic chocolate milkshake.....and let me tell you....it was pretty crap. moral to my fantastic story....its a fine line between classic and crap!

The amount of times I heard 'down under' when i was travelling around america and europe was sickening! Anything famous here is totally un inspiring and utterly boring. INXS??? how did they get famous..... and man I wish they'd stop embarrasing the country and stop touring.

Make a CD with good Australian music on it/ That means no chisel....no INXS, no barnes, no farnham, no vines, no powderfinger, no alex lloyd, no alex lloyd, no alex lloyd!!!...no alex lloyD!*!*!**!

i think it's time the world got to know some good aussie bands that are kicking around....or have kicked around.

Credible?....surely this implies that you listen to other people rather than trust your own judgement?....ie not listening to something because someone has told you or you've read that, it is sad, cheesy or no good?

How sad.

Who's to say what is and what isn't credible?
To my new best friend neil!

One lovely day you wrote this>>>

Why does my post imply that?
Who's to say what is and what isnt credible? well.....me!! It's my post! I reign supreme!.....Im the king and Queen of everything i post, so I get to decided what I think is credible and what isn't. When the King and Queen die Im going to have a baby with big ears which will decide things for me. So I'd get on his good side now.
Every band I posted on that fantastic list (it really is quite supurb) Ive listened to.... and liked! I have no idea how you came to any other conclusion!
The only thing that's sad to me.....is my dog outside looking through the window asking me to come and play. I think I will. The sun is shining and it'd be rude not too. Take a chill pill Neil. Theres ice creams to be eaten!

Donovan.

p.s. dogs are credible......cause I say so and it's my post! Feel free to say that you think dogs arnt credible, but dont start saying I read dog magazines and take their opinions on dogs as my own.
It's amazing how one word can make other people look like a coconut. (crazy as a)! me or you?
Oh come ON peoples...

Tis the season to be jolly, tra la la la la la la la... yeah and all that...

Please can this be shut or otherwise not turned into a war... please...

Neil made his choices for his party so the thread's pretty much run its race methinks...

Anyone?

Merry Christmas to all, and to all (here right now in the eastern US anyway) a goodnight...

please don't make me come in here again tonight, kids Wink
Well, there is the less obvious very cool Australian bands, I'm thinking along the lines of

- Skyhooks
- Laughing Clowns
- Ed Kuepper
- Madder Lake
- Schnell Fenster, of course
- Dave Graney 'n' the Coral Snakes
- a few Kids In The Kitchen numbers
- Fraternity etc.

Bouquets to the selections of INXS, The Saints, Russell Morris' "The Real Thing", Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs, TISM...

...and in the spirit of mutual respect, I have removed my comments on Paul Kelly and Nick Cave :-)... especially Paul Kelly, since radio has already started playing the sanctimonious, horrible and boring "How To Make Gravy" just like they do every other year at this time...

Paul.
[At the risk of starting everything again...]

Out of all the lists I've seen here this is actually the one I agree with -

Particularly at the moment -

Knievel - oh lovely lovely Knievel... Big Grin
Augie March - apparently on their way to England in 2003! Woohoo!!
You Am I - possibly one of the most overlooked bands I've ever come across. Everyone seems to go on to much bigger better things while they get left where they are. Why is this? WHY??
Art of Fighting
and the wonderful Paul Kelly.

But really I like em all, though I would add Powderfinger cos I'm like that sometimes. And Dave Graney. And anyone else I can't think of right now but might remember later on.

And I agree about the NO Alex Lloyd. I heard the promo thing they gave out at the Manchester Neil show in 2001 and wasn't impressed. I can't see what all the fuss is about TBH.
