The song and video are not bad, but I can’t get over how uninvolving I find Liam’s voice. Have felt this way since I’ll Be Lightning. Many say he sounds like his dad, and I just don’t get it — maybe some superficial similarity but I think Neil’s voice is one for the ages, and Liam, while perfectly capable as a singer just has such a bland and unengaging voice to me. I’ve preordered the album but the released songs so far range from “not for me” (Ghosts) to “growing on me” (Back to Life) to “quite nice” (Hold Her Close). This one is “not bad but not great.” I’m teetering on canceling the preorder, I always want to support the Finns but can’t get too excited about this one.

The song sounds nice, but I do not get the video.

I will always give a Finn record a chance, but I don’t have high expectations for this one either.  I preordered the digital download.  Maybe it will surprise me after I’ve heard the complete album a few times through.

Is it just me or do the opening few bars of Anger Plays a Part remind anyone of Secret God? (the 2001 Neil Finn song that is, not me!)

Regardless, I absolutely love this song. Thanks for sharing the video @Sugar Mouse. I seem to recall Neil being absolutely blown away the first time he heard it.

As for the video, I love the fact they've tried something different. Although in this day and age of political correctness — along with everyone's need to always feel outraged about something — it wouldn't surprise me if the lads get taken to task over the underage drinking in this clip. Ah well, it'll give them some good publicity for a ripper song.

On a separate note, does anyone miss not being able to purchase physical CD singles anymore? Even when these digital singles are "released" we don't seem to get any b-sides. In fact it's been more than ten years since we got any new original b-sides from any Finn, digital or otherwise (excluding Anthem from Crowded House's 2015 7" Help Is Coming of course). Not a complaint. I mean we've been spoiled this past decade!

I have to agree with you. I don’t get the similar voices comments. They don’t sound similar to me at all. Liam’s range is totally different to Neil’s. Neil’s is more broader. Doesn’t mean Liam can’t be a singer songwriter. Just means they’re different. Nothing wrong with that.
