You make some very interesting observations, mattl. Re: Neil's Song Characteristics

I think one of the biggest benefits neil has as a writer is that he's not from a particular music scene (ie new-york, manchester etc), and that means he's been influenced by a lot of rock 'n roll kinda music but it's all underpinned by something a little more mysterious - which I quite often think is a combination of (obviously) neil's amazing songwriting talents, but also the new zealand landscape he must so love. The liner notes to Recurring Dream I think go someway to trying to quantify...

There's no way you could say which of the Finns is more talented! They're both so talented, it's just futile to argue which one has more talent than the other. Plus the fear that no songs sound right unless you possess the insouciance of the lounge player ( I want that so desperately) 1. Any songs good for my lamentably restricted voice range? 2. If no, what's recommended as instrumental? 3. What's most basic to learn to play? 4. Still nothing from this book?

I was led to believe the US version of Neil's second solo album was only a remix of the original release. But this cut at least has had quite a few overdubs added. Slowpogo gestures toward a really interesting question. What determines an album's quality? Is a brilliant album one that has several memorable songs that rank amongst the artist's best? Or does an album's quality derive from something more holistic, something that transcends the brilliance (or less-than-brilliance) of its individual songs? The Pajama Club album may not have many tracks that will make our all-time top-ten lists of favourite Neil songs. I doubt that, next time Crowded House...

I agree, Aimee Mann and Neil Finn would probably be able to create something great together. She's a much more pointed, barbed lyricist and his gift for melody is unsurpassed, so they both bring something unique and iconic to the table, which, on paper, sounds like it could produce something great. That said, I think I'd rather see only a 2 or 3 Finn/Mann songs, instead of , say, an album's worth. Honestly, I've been disappointed by the Neil Finn/Johnny Marr collaborations so far. I mean,...

Maybe Distant Sun. It starts out pleasant but rather benign, the second verse takes it up a notch, and the bridge snaps things into focus. Then the final chorus is really resonant and poignant. Thinking back, that song was critical in really appreciating Crowded House, and Neil Finn as a great songwriter.
