Ask Seany about the Danish !! Mrs HP, they were called 'kruidnootjes'. And they are only available before Sinterklaas, which is on December 5. Please don't make me explain.... I had to do that at customs at Sydney airport and everyone was in stitches, but it's really not that strange is it?? I mean, a man on the roof on a white horse who (the man, not the horse) throws pressies down the chimney, right in your shoes?? What's weird about that?? So if we could persuade the Enz to do a few more...

I was 16 and I had probably only just recently purchased Together Alone. I discovered CH in the summer of 1995 after hearing DDIO during The Stand, a Stephen King miniseries. While I knew that I liked the band I was not yet obsessed didn't even think about whether or not the band was still together. I think I first heard of their breakup when a friend saw a "news" report on their farewell to the world show on the American TV talk show "Talk Soup." I don't remember caring at that point...

I was 20 at the time (seems like a long time ago) and had recently discovered the Internet and its hidden charms... I remember listening to what I can only guess had to be among the first live recording to be posted online, of a Crowded House concert in Italy (the song I heard at the time was Instinct). I hadnt even heard of Hessies departure from the band years before, so I only knew of the band breakup some months after the FTTW concert. I got Recurring Dream for my birthday later that...

Ahh, more hysterical Tasmanian jokes. Nope, they're all from Melbourne Vox amps are stupidly famous amps thanks to The Beatles using them, and Neil has been using one since Dizrhythmia and they are valve amps, it's fairly rare for a modern band (or performance in this case) to use such an old amp. It's pretty clear in your photo fourth from the bottom. Some of us take an interest in the equipment used, rather than hair and pants On that note, it looks like a new Les Paul goldtop Neil's using...

I was 19, in Asda supermarket and read it in Q magazine. I was out of the scene a little bit after Together Alone (for some reason) and didnt know it was even on the cards.. Walking with a tear in my eye back to the counter to pay for my magazine I saw a whole wall of FTTW Vhs (remember those kids?) tapes - "eeek they even have the breakup on video!!" I was back on the scene.....

Well, I was 26 and I was not totally surprised. I knew they were not happy campers, and that the band wasn't the same without Paul. Also, I had survived the tragic news of Split Enz breaking up in '84. That was the end of the world to me at the time! I thought there would never be music again! I then saw CH come from that, so I knew after CH there would always be the music past and more to come. I went to the Corner Hotel farewell shows and travelled to Sydney for the final. Wow ten years ago!!

Paul's middle name is definitely Newell.... I believe it was March 26th 2005 but I'm not sure who can confirm this for you. There has been a bit of confusion about but local newspapers and reports claimed that it was the Saturday after Good Friday. The plaque sounds like a great idea. It would be great to see it when it's finished!

abc.net.au reported he was found on the night of Saturday 26th of March. Sydney Morning Herald site said he was found Saturday afternoon 26th of March after being last seen walking the dogs on Friday night. Technically I guess he could have died on the Friday, which would be the 25th.

Well there's no reason why it couldn't be just as big a hit as EIH - it was a No.1 album after all - but something tells me it will be a rocket fueled hit. That is, big sales from fans in the first week then a plummet to ground in the forthcoming weeks. That's the way the charts are these days. It's just irritating when people like James Blunt can hang around for a while or Shakira's horrible "Hips Don't Lie" can spend 8 weeks at No.1. Somehow with the current musical climate I fear Tim...

According to The Oz Music Chart it did make No.1 nationally for a single week (after release) but granted, it may have made only No.2 on the ARIA chart. Which begs the question: Which chart to believe? I think Tim and Neil would rather believe the Oz Music Chart!

Re: Farewell to the World - CD & DVD

slowpogo ·
I think much of CH's spontaneity came from touring often, where it's just one show after the other, and there's a feeling of, "If this doesn't work, there's always tomorrow night..." I've played on tours with various groups, and it's a completely different mindset from a single performance with lots of build-up. FTTW had the added gravitas of being the last show ever, and one of the first they'd played together (with Paul) in over a year. So I'm sure a feeling of "Let's do this right"...

Just looking at my advance copy of the FTTW DVD - to be precise, the credits section on DVD #2 - and listening to a studio version of "Spirit Of The Stairs" that I have never heard before (and no, this is not the one that was on the advance copies of Neil's first solo album). Does this mean the song had after all been recorded as one of the 1995 demos? Can anyone shed some light on this?

I think you're probably right, Duderanch. On my copy (in a normal CD player), when the audience roar fades in at the beginning, there's a weird sort of quiet synthetic chirping mixed in with the clapping and screams--probably from things being out of phase somehow when mixed into two speakers. I'm surprised I didn't think of that before...with headphones on, I remember thinking the audience sounded like it was behind me somehow, weirdly separate from everything else. Unfortunately I don't...
