Re: Intriguer Deluxe Reissue discussion

Guy. ·
So exactly what are the origins of "Two minutes of silence" and "Nonsense of course"? Various recordings by the band after Intriguer was finished? 2011? Edited and overdubbed by Neil in 2015/2016? The first is one song and the second an edit of various bits and pieces?

Thanks for the response, @Camus . I'm still a little confused, though. The version I linked to (once) doesn't seem to fade out. From recollection it has the same full ending, which suggests there's been an edit somewhere. If I recall it correctly - I really should find a moment to relisten, shouldn't I? - that would be at odds with your description. Can anyone confirm which version is on the new vinyl? I'm assuming it's the longer version but, as I'm not intending to pick it up, I'm keen to...

As far as I understand it, here's the breakdown: Australian 1986 vinyl: "Can't Carry On" (edit with fade out, no "I Walk Away") US 1986 vinyl: "I Walk Away", no "Can't Carry On" International CD: both tracks, "Can't Carry On" (no edit) It appears those of us who are used to the non-Australian version never knew there was ever a "Can't Carry On" version with a fade out.

I had a quick listen to the shorter version of Can't Carry On online and, while I wasn't able to give it my full attention, it did seem to have the same ending as the longer version, suggesting it was an edit. However, discogs lists different producer/engineer credits for each version, which is what has led me to wonder whether they might be different recordings.

I did not know that about iTunes, I'll have to give it a try to maybe edit off some of the brief comments at the beginning/end of some of the tracks. I've also used Audacity, but this sounds easy. I like the idea of your waves ending TA.

At one point during 'The Toddler', Nick couldn't help but pop his head around the curtain to figure out what the hell was going on... The man has no doubt seen more than his share of wonderful nonsense from touring with Hessie for years, but still he stood transfixed with this dumfounded grin, equal parts entertained and uncomprehending of what he was witnessing.

Woody, Thanks for the work, I love playing around with playlists as well. If you want to edit Nonsense of Course and separate it from Dizzy Heights (though this is a CH version, not the Neil solo version), you should download a free program called Audacity. It lets you play a song and record it into a new file, then you can simply hit stop at the end of Nonsense and save it to a music file. It's super easy, if I can do it anyone can. I will add I could never get it to work on my laptop, only...

Re: Complete Singles Collection?

Paul H ·
The thing is, how would such a collection be compiled? A great many tracks were only released in the UK, and some were exclusive to other territories. So, would a box be based on UK singles, Aussie singles or a hybrid? Would it be vinyl only (pointless IMO) or make use of the multiple formats that were issued on CD in the 1990s?

A tricky one . I started collecting the singles and had a list ( from somewhere) to check off from.I got them all save Better Be Home Soon which at that time was priced at £20.. far too much so I didn't bother. Most of the "singles" as you know were "doubles" with alternative "B" sides of live tracks and of course we have the special World Where You Live single which after 8 years or so shatters to small pieces without warning and Locked Out which becomes covered in some sort of plastic...

An interview that was originally distributed with the iTunes release of EIH expands a bit on the above clip. Neil also mentions that he had originally written the song for an unnamed film; when that didn't work out, he put the song on the shelf, but Tim urged him to revive it. As anyone who's heard the Visconti recording knows, the song evolved substantially during the recording of EIH. Edit: hey, I'm no longer a pitied rhino!

You can do that, its fine. what you count do is download the same track, from the same site, umpteen times because it can and does get noticed. Also, remixes and live versions of the same song should also count as the same track for the chart. If you're doing this with a new single from a new album, then it should all be set up fine and dandy (so, say they had Track 1 as a new single, and Track 1 was available as Track 1 album version ; Track 1 radio edit ; Track 1 jacknife lee remix ; Track...

Yeah, it's really easy to put new drum parts down in Pro Tools. And then you can hear it... In the real world, where you're trying to make a band sound like, well a band, and not a recording project - You build from your foundations. Your foundations are your drums, bass, and then rhythm guitar. Everything else sits on top of that. As a musician, how I play my parts depends largely on what the rhythm section are doing. It's an argument I've had countless times with engineers and musicians...

Parihaka was also a nice surprise, I agree Lamb - lucky you! Going to Utrecht! Tim's voice was damaged in the mid1990ies, RevDoc. He'd strained his vocal chords badly, or something similarly gruesome for a singer. He has regained most of it, but yeah, some of the older songs are quite taxing. Hell, if I...
