Re: Bootlegs, Taboo????

radiobug ·
It all boils down to this. If you purchase bootlegs you help to finance illegal activities and line someone's pocket with thousands of dollars for material that does not belong to him. However, for years and years, when reel to reel recorders were first available, people have been taping albums from libraries, their friends, from universities, wherever. With the availablity of cassette recorders, people have been making dubs of any and everything for decades. I'm sure some of you have...

I envy you... well, sorta. Sydney's never been my favorite town - guess I'm biased tho as I grew up in Melbourne and lived in Brisbane for six years... As for the tv coverage, um don't hold yer breath. As I recall, the 20th Anniversary (was it really ten years ago? WOW) sailed by with nary a whimper... Ya gotta remember that the Enz were originally a New Zealand band, after all, and Australians tend to look upon their Trans-Tazmen cuzzens more than a little bit like Americans regard...

Gawd no- they threw away about 90%, very little is ever kept on video.....they have one or two "video only" Enz copies but most of the Countdowns GTKS etc etc have all gone. I think I have more VHS stuff and we are transfering it now but you can't really use it on DVD without major work...(refer to ten million previous posts), so no they didn't convert.... plus think of the time it would take to convert everything.....probably tensof thousands of hours...'83 Countdown awards exists as an...

Shouldn't that be your "line out" plug? I've burned vinyl to CD by plugging my stereo in to my computer through the "line in". If data is to be going out from computer to stereo/recording thing, doesn't it need to leave via the "out" plug? (Bearing in mind I'm sitting here gazing lovingly at my new sound card and have done groovy stuff with it already, but I still don't fully understand how it all works ) Does anyone else think it's a little odd that this webcast is coming up in a few days...

hi mishima, i'd like to get it captured as well and these would be the options i can think of : 1 - tv out in computer going to television set. video attached to television. press record on tape ! 2 - dodgy stream grabbing program on computer. success is dependant on format of stream and how tricky things have been made. for each of the above - gotta have fast cable internet connection to have a chance of getting both audio and streaming video. 3 - highlights on the website. probably easier...

Also, Something For Kate and george (note the lowercase " g ") probably have every single show recorded for them & wouldn't have to buy old documentries or TV appearances for their DVDs, plus it would have to be a lot easier to produce & you probably wouldn't need to do as mch research as the Split Enz one. george are probably the best band in Australia at the moment, by the way (IMO). Yep S.G. was many years ago, I think a few of the Countdowns survived (the ones you see occasionally on Rage) because the producer grabbed them out of the dumpster and put as much in the boot of his cara s possible!!!!! The ABC would of kept most "event" type Countdown shows- Awards, the 10th anniversary show etc but compared to the hundreds of episodes not many exist. A lot of tv stations wont hand over the performance rights, and there are always ten bands wanting that one spot on the...

Maybe in a perfect world (before it really is too late and the footage in question is either destroyed or damaged beyond repair), the likes of the BBC would release their own DVD collection of Enz performances from 'Sight & Sound', 'Top Of The Pops' and 'The Old Grey Whistle Test', for example, amongst other BBC music shows that featured the Enz. I feel like these TV stations are taking the "dog-in-the-manger" approach to the footage they have in their archives. In other words, they...

Tim always gives great interviews on TV, but he never seems to be 100% comfortable in front of the camera. Basically, he always seems to look away or down. Not saying that it's easy to look straight into the camera, though.

Re: Enz With A Bang

Jaffaman ·
The sound would have only dropped out on mono TVs. The problem was due to the left and right audio channels in the interview sections being out of phase with each other. When listened to in stereo, this gives a 3D effect, but in mono the channels cancel each other out almost completely. This happens occasionally on TV and radio due to carelessness and/or faulty cables. The broadcaster is normally monitoring in stereo and so often doesn't notice the problem.

Well, Gryph', I forsee some karma for those TV stations that wouldn't help you. It reminds me of the Little Red Rooster story we learnt at school as kids. But, sadly, it really seems like the BBC just doesn't know what a goldmine they're sitting on with the Enz footage they have. Just because the Enz weren't mega-stars (although we the fans know different), they don't seem interested in cashing in on a potentially lucrative market. There is widespread world interest in this material. Anyway,...

Why does cohesion have to be a mark of a quality album? Look at The Beatles' 'White Album' - probably the biggest rag-bag of different musical styles, half-finished ideas, as well as pure classics that you're ever likely to hear. It has absolutely no theme. A very uncoherent album, but it works. Even George Martin didn't want to put it out as a double album but was talked round. I actually like Woodface because the mixture of styles had never been so obvious on a CH album before. It runs...

I think the proliferation of live CH material was due to the band recording many of their shows themselves. Because they then owned those recordings they were free to do with them as they wished. Luckily for us they made them available. I would guess that few live Split Enz recordings exist simply because the band didn't make many recordings themselves and the few recordings that do exist tend to be when the band was recorded by a third party (radio/TV etc etc) who owned the recordings. Actually, surprisingly many do exist. Mike Chunn apparantly has quite a collection, as does Eddie Raynor. I'm also sure that Split Enz recorded many of their gigs themselves. I guess it's really different people and maybe they don't want it released. It's a shame, as they are an amazing band live if you can find the unmentionable 'B' word.

Ooooh, my guess is that the Sound Department were told "it's a little low, bump the levels up" and did so, knee jerk style. There's more to it that just volume though. It's a hard thing to explain, but musicals can be strange animals and something like this with a band, body mics and pre records is a big juggling act that requires expertise - and as far as I'm concerned, there's really only one company in the country that gets it right. Thanks for the clarification! While we're on US chinese take away - we always see people eating from cardboard boxes on the TV. What do they do with wet dishes, like, say, beef and blackbean? As for coming home - I've just had 3 weeks on the beach at Taree, surf and fishing every day. I don't envy you the snow and cold. Did I mention how many prawns we put away? I think that eating Chinese out of the cartons is only on TV. Two of those cartons have plain steamed rice, and the rest have saucy things. I'm thinking you need to assemble them on an actual plate. Digging into a carton of steamed rice doesn't sound too appealing.
