Re: Tim Finn Kitchen Sink: a chronological reference guide
Many thanks for this and enjoying the Steve Hoffman threads. I have a listing of “Sound of Truth” and “I can’ Stand it” from the Woodface era. Any ideas? Dylan

Re: Tim Finn Kitchen Sink: a chronological reference guide
I've heard of "Sound of Truth": an early version of "Always Never Now." But I've never heard it. I've never heard of "I Can't Stand It." Would love to hear both of those. However, At any rate, I'm fairly certain they've never been released officially in any form and thus have been left off this list.

There is a recording of Sound of Truth 'out there' but IIRC it's a recording of a playback so not the greatest recording.

Tim Finn Kitchen Sink: a chronological reference guide
Although Tim Finn has no convenient Kitchen Sink collections like that which Neil Finn (and Jaffaman) have generously provided to us fans, this is a list is meant to collate various Tim Finn or Tim Finn associated songs that have been released here and there in various forms in chronological. Due to the fact that there are no deluxe editions of Tim Finn albums as there are of Crowded House, this list of odds and sods is quite a bit longer than Neil's. I've also included prominent guest spots...

I've revised this slightly. 1978: They Won't Let My Girlfriend Talk To Me( demo, released on Other Enz) Remote Control (Phil Manzanera) Cuban Crisis(Phil Manzanera Hot Spot (Phil Manzanera -- vocals only) Slow Motion TV (Phil Manzanera--vocals only) Message Boy ( 1979 Split Enz B-side, later released on Rootin' Tootin' Luton Tapes) Semi-Detached (1979 B-side, later released on Rear En z and Rootin' Tootin' Luton Tapes) Hyptnotised (Split Enz, 1980 B-side, later released on Rootin' Tootin'...

Re: Tim Finn Kitchen Sink: a chronological reference guide
Great list Lance. Just looking at the Split Enz era tracks, you could add "Jolted" (from "Oddz & Enz") and "Murder" and "Something To Do" (both live from "I Like It Rare" series). Possibly also "Merry Christmas From The Frenz Of The Enz". Also "Hermit McDermit" (7") and "Mind Over Matter " (A&M "Frenzy") were earlier releases of Luton versions. Plenty of live versions of otherwise released tracks left off, but you may not have wanted to include these. "Another Great Divide" was...

Re: Tim Finn Kitchen Sink: a chronological reference guide
YOu're right, I have missed those. I did deliberately leave off the live B-sides (for now). I'll probably redo this at some later point to include them. I did a list for Neil, too, and as we all know, there are so many live B-sides with Crowded House, I was a bit daunted at the work so when I feel ready to tackle that I'll do both of them.

Fantastic find re "Quasimodo's Dream". That's definitely a new one for the completists. Your other titles are all from "White Cloud". Except "Family Images" and "Into This Place" don't exist as far as I know - definitely not performed as part of "White Cloud", but likely refer to some of the spoken word component. It's a tragedy that the full "White Cloud" has not been released, as well as more from the "Ladies In Black", "Twelfth Night", "Vermilion Sands", "Forenzics" and "Star Navigator"...

Hi all, my first post here. I've been reading this subject with great interest. I love making rarities compilations for my favourite artists and recently decided to re-research Tim's rarities and update my compilation discs. Your information has been of great help. Thank you. I guess we all approach these things a little differently, my criteria is usually just to have everything where the artists vocals are prominent, and thats how I've been collating my Tim Finn discs. In doing so I have...

Re: Tim Finn Kitchen Sink: a chronological reference guide
Curious about "Quasimodo's Dream"; the other versions on youtube indicate it was a hit for the Reels. Did Tim write it? If not, odd that Tim would be doing a cover on a show where the host calls him one of the best songwriters around. Also, has anyone heard any buzz about when Forenzics may be coming out? And David, I agree that more of Tim's "projects" deserve more wide release. Not everyone can see a stage show in Australia. And the sound quality of Fiery Maze left a lot to be desired.

Re: Tim Finn Kitchen Sink: a chronological reference guide
The sound quality is very bad; the seat-of-your-pants energy and performance makes up for it in my opinion. Id be happy with White Cloud Black Shadow of similar quality. Ladies In Black seems more a traditional musical than Fiery Maze or White Cloud... so not burning as badly for it. Star Navigator, though, would be nice.

I’m sure I bought Mary of the South Seas on iTunes years ago? But I can now only see two cover versions... Maybe I’m thinking of The Land Torments the Sea, but I don’t see that either.

Ok, here's my latest effort. I've corrected mistakes I had made and included some things I had overlooked before. I also added "Quasimodo's Dream" (even though it's unreleased, I have a few other unreleased but available curios here, as well.) STill not really complete: there are some Split Enz live rarities and demos that are on YouTube that I haven't bothered to get into here. So still a work in progress, but very close to definitive, in my opinion. I have not included songs that Tim...

Re: Tim Finn Kitchen Sink: a chronological reference guide
Hi @Lance LaSalle . Tim had nothing to do with 'Quasimodo's Dream' (ie writing credits). I've got The Reels album and the lyrics were all written by the lead singer David Mason. David Mason was also interviewed back in an Australian music documentary about the song and he admitted the lyrics were absolutely nonsense!! It was just nice background sounds with the synthesizer, which was all the thing back in 1981.

That alternate "it's only natural" suggests a very dark alternate reality indeed. Also I wonder if "Chainsaw" came before or after "Pieces of Change". The lyrics seem more finished in "Chainsaw" but the chorus of "Pieces of Change" is far more developed than in "Chainsaw". Also Family Ties is brilliant.

Best of the Fangradio demos
I still can't believe that we got over 250 unreleased Neil Finn tracks spanning the last 50 years of his career. What an unexpected (and somewhat exhausting) Christmas present to us all! I must admit I'm still digesting the sheer breadth and depth of the material that has been streamed on Fangradio for the last month. A treasure trove of demos and long rumored recordings that really puts the comparably few previously released demos and rarities to shame. I do think I've reached a point where...

Honorable mention to "The Wind Was On the Withered Heath" and "There and Back Again," the latter of which was performed live on air. Both give a great insight into Neil's process of developing material for the Hobbit movie. Also, an honorable mention to the best instrumentals: I Land Again We Just Like the Questions Stereo Love Untitled Instrumental (~4 minutes) Wrinkles It's Happening Deco 1

Lots to love on there, but my fave, and one you didn't list, is the York Street demo of Family Ties. With that walking bass line, tinkling piano and crooning vocals, I imagine it being sung in a smoky prohibition era nightclub. So different from the TWT version. If only that York Street album had been finished, I think it would have been a great one. Other standouts have been Chainsaw, Good Luck Morning, and the poolhouse Blue Smoke.

Pretty much all of the above have been remarkable unexpected gems - I'd say everything from the Woodface era - the unheard demos and the alternative versions - so glad that every one of those have found a home having been passed over for the 2016 deluxe edition. All of the pre-Together Alone Poolhouse band demos which beg the question where this poolhouse was exactly - Auckland? More laid back recordings of songs which gained more bite when they were recorded with Youth producing with...

My 5 favourites have been (in order of how excited I was when they popped up): - Cemetery in the Rain (either version). So much better than what I was expecting. I really really hope that the delay in the Finn CD reissue is because they are trying the get the green light to include this in 'disc 2' (I know thats unlikely though!). - Twice if you are Lucky - alternative (Lucky Lola) version. This is my preferred version of the song. The one that got away... Since hearing an early live version...

Thank you Neil, and thank you Jeremy for making hours of musical treasures available to the fans. I've spent the last three days listening on my phone, home laptop, and work desktop. While I've heard very few (maybe 3?) of the true rarities mentioned in this thread, the stream has been a blessing in another way. I work at a school system in an area of southeast Texas that...

Thanks so much for the kind words and thoughts. There are many here without homes or vehicles, but what a blessing it is to know there was no loss of life and no serious injury. (For the record, I wasn't affected at all, but many of my coworkers lost their vehicles when the tornado passed our building. I'm fascinated by the process as well. The other day, I heard back to back versions of "Message to My Girl," which made me laugh. I was like, "The algorithm loves that song, too!" Anyone heard "Crowded House - Twice If You're Lucky (alternative version)"? I literally stepped away from my desk for 10 minutes, and, of course, that's when it played that song, which is a favorite of mine. Dang. I've been waiting a week to hear that one. matt

Matt, I've heard that one a few times but have yet to hear the studio version of The Only Way to Go is Forward, which I'm dying to hear (wonder if Mariola is still around, that was a favorite of his). Have heard several instances of songs being back-to-back, or very nearly so. I have been listening A LOT, and haven't heard studio Chainsaw in a week or more, or Four Stepping, either, for that matter. On the other hand, songs from the Neil/Paul Kelly set, plus Extravagenza, and Sun Came Out...

Re: Best of the Fangradio demos
The tracks are playing randomly, although the system might possibly be trying to strike a balance between artist names, leading to a lot of Neil Finn + Paul Kelly tracks to offset the many Crowded House and Split Enz tracks. It's also not smart enough to recognise when a song has played recently, so there's no way to avoid two versions of the same song playing back to back unless I hover over the skip button.

Re: Best of the Fangradio demos
Both studio demos are from the 1990 Finn Brothers sessions at Tim's Periscope Studio.

Re: Best of the Fangradio demos
Thanks, this is very interesting. Those sessions also produced "Sound of Truth" and "Throw Your Arms Around Me". Was this an attempt to keep the idea of a Brothers album going after so many songs were poached for Woodface? Are you at liberty to say how many songs were recorded there, and if there could be more forthcoming for Fangradio? By the way, it was very pleasant to hear "Mary of the South Seas" come up yesterday. Such a lovely song.

Re: Best of the Fangradio demos
I'd be really interested to know some mundane stuff like the order the Murchison Street demos were recorded in or, for example. And also why some tracks appear to have tape damage - presumably, the recordings we hear weren't dubbed from the master tapes - or why there seem to be digital silence in the middle of some tracks (the live version of Rosalie springs to mind). Presumably, there was also damage that could only be covered by inserting silence, but then, why wasn't that done on other...

Re: Best of the Fangradio demos
I assume that a lot of the tape damaged demos came from cassette tapes from Neil’s personal collection. They were probably made for review purposes and got damaged over the years. Hence their quality was not deemed good enough for inclusion on the deluxe editions, even if the content was otherwise compelling. But that’s just my theory.

Re: Best of the Fangradio demos
The Murchison St demos were recorded on various 1/4" 8-track tapes. I can tell you the order someday but don't have the info to hand currently. Some tracks are from cassette. The After Hours demos and live recording were dubbed from cassette to DAT by someone in the 90s without Dolby decoding. It's possible that the cassette had to be turned over during "Rosalie". I'll check my notes sometime. The original 4-track 1/4" tape of the demos still exists in Mike's collection, but it was in poor...

As ever, thank you so much for taking the time to respond, Jeremy. Rosalie is interesting because someone seems to have taken the time to record digital silence in the gap, presumably to mask something. I haven't been able to hear the song enough to familiarise myself with it so I can't tell if the recording returns in real time or if something has been truncated. If it's in real time, I don't think it was to hide a tape turn, unless someone had a swanky deck that could reverse play I'm...

"Too Good For This World" from Dreamers Are Waiting is also from the aborted Mr Pye musical.

Re: Best of the Fangradio demos
So "Pye Flies" is apparently part of the aborted Finn Brothers musical based on Mr. Pye, by Mervyn Peake. "Alone", from Out of Silence was also written for that. Jeremy, are any of the other demos currently playing from that effort, or are there more extant that could be added? It would be interesting to piece together what was recorded for that project.
