It was written for the 1985 movie 'Coca Cola Kid' and was released as a 7" single. There wasn't an album for the movie, but the movie credits say: "Home For My Heart" Composed & Written by Tim Finn Performed by Tim Finn, Phil Manzanera, Alan Spenner, Charlie Morgan, Guy Fletcher Produced by Phil Manzanera Tim has a minor role acting in the movie too. Hey Al, The Finns and Eddie Rayner are very prominent on Manzanera's K-Scope (1978) album, which includes the track "Slow Motion TV." Their contributions to the overall sound are very strong, but strangely none of the songs are co-written by the Finns or Rayner. There are some good moments in the music, but I think the lyrics (by bassist Bill MacCormick?) are pretty awful for the most part and seem rather unworthy of the Finns' singing talent. But the album is definitely worth checking out.

Here's another from 1975, this one's from RAM in July '75 (details at bottom). I love Phil's reference to Brian Finn - early days indeed! Its slow work being a new band with a new sound No doubt about it, Split Enz is a strange band. They walk out on stage like a collection of clockwork scarecrows and their music is like a berserk mechanism. There are six musicians, a spoon player cum dancer and sound effects guy. This is a very recent getting into for me, I got into Enz after reading the Roxy Music book 'The Thrill Of It All' in May, mentioning that Phil Manzanera had produced their first (actually second, but says first in the book) album, I got interested and decided to find out more on Split Enz through Wikipedia. Then in September, after listening to I Got You and Six Months In A Leaky Boat a fair few times, I bought Spellbound. Then came Mental Notes (after buying Amy (Darling) of iTunes), then...

Just goes to show how different people see things - I would never say Phil or Tim were cheesy - only ever if it is on purpose, taking the mickey, - but having heard some of Tim's efforts on Southern Cross with Phil Manzanera I was admittedly dissapoointed - very 80s. but as for Neil I have often said that he was commercial and cheesy. Maybe I just don't get what he does the same. Keep trying with the early stuff of the Enz - it does grow on you. I find it similar to Sparks, where you have to...

I'd love to see another Enz album, I don't hold out much hope though. I'd love to see a Phil Judd headed Enz, it would raise Phil's profile and as Phil era Enz had many possibilities latent in it still to explore. i think it would be the most artistically satisfying. Phil doing most of the writing with support from Neil & Tim, Eddie and Noel would need to be in it & preferably Nigel, all contributing to the arrangements. Maybe they could get Phil Manzanera to produce it. Mr Judd...

I can't believe it. Am i the sole Mental Notes defender! Mental Notes is superior to ST. Yeah yeah ST has a more careful & loving production & Phil Manzanera did a good job. However, the original one is just right. It thrived on neglect, it is turgid and strange, some kind of alchemy took place and a masterpiece was born. Mental Notes is so cohesive, it has atmosphere, the air is thick and troubled & a cleaner production wouldn't suit it. Phil's cover prefectly matches the...

Coming soon to record stores nowhere! I figured it was time to wrap up the deluxe editions project for the original 4 Tim Finn solo albums. Re: Neil Finn is an almighty Guitarist!!!

The famous Tommy J sense-of-humour again, right? 'Properly' is the phrase actually used in the article I read, I take it to mean that Neil felt his playing was average and unremarkable until Manzanera lent his virtuosity and ability to Neil so that he could learn a thing or two. Seems it worked.

I had no idea my sense of humor was famous. Whaddya know? I was only joking about the word "properly" because it seems like a silly way to refer to rock and roll guitar playing, it seems more appropriate for a classical violinist or something.

I’m writing these lines as an addition to my above summary because for a while I’ve been wondering how much was in reality Tim’s contribution to the songs on Phil Manzanera’s album „Southern Cross”. I know that the subject has been touched upon several times in earlier threads. Officially one can read on the picture sleeve of the later released „A Million Reasons Why”...

In 1995, Phil Manzanera released a double CD collection with the title The Manzanera Collection. As we know, a song with vocal by Tim titled "Fifth Wheel" was on CD2 (track 21), a great tune indeed. The song is credited (Manzanera/Finn) as usual. Although this song appeared first on this double CD collection, it must have been written and recorded back in 1988-1989 (the time of Southern Cross). On Discogs, I could now check the scans of the CD covers, and I have found that the same musicians...

I'd probably have to re-listen to Southern Cross to address specificities, but to the weight of Tim's co-writing input, allow me to point to Persuasion. Initially a purely Richard Thompson instrumental, I've heard both stripped-back versions that are more Richard's original piece with Tim's lyrics sung over the, whereas, as Tim fans, we can see how Tim has taken the song and really made it his own over the years. Perhaps his work with Manzanera is an early incarnation of such powerful...
