Re: Split Enz DVD thoughts
Hey Campus no sadly ABC/Countdown threw out/erased about 80% of their stuff many many years ago, the 'No Bother to me" that some fans have came from our own library...it's just a bad quality video that I own and fading fast. Sad though as so much cool Countdown stuff is gone forever. Some of the Anniversary stuff is good, some can't be used as the sound recording didn't work out....my main fear is because it was filmed by Stratford Productions would it be in the hands of the liquidators too-...

BUMP! If Gryphon can't tell me what's going to be on the next major CH dvd 2003 at least please provide me with an answer on whether the Dreaming Videos will be on that 2003 release. I really need to know. I have a Christmas budget to work out you know Basically where I stand is I'm hesitant to buy Dreaming as I've seen at least 75% of it's content since I already own the I Like To Watch CH video compilation (which cost me to buy from ebay US$25 last year). From reports on TITM email list...

w.c.i.b.n. - I couldn't be too sure, but I'd say that the "Major" 2003 Crowded House DVD won't include all the video clips from Dreaming (I think PG even said that, but don't quote me on that). Anyway, you seem like a pretty big fan of everything Neil Finn / Crowded House , so sureley money isn't going to get in the way of purchacing both DVDs...! Trust me, you'll be happy with both... as long as your Christmas budget allows for that (you really do have to take these things into...

I finally thought of a place that actually has a picture of me. My friend Vanessa has an account at snapfish. Here is a link to one of them. A group happy hour picture. I think the link should work: picture p.s. I'm the "fuzzy" blond... p.s.s. Brandi, I would kill for your beautiful teeth!!

Re: books ..?
Crowded House - 'Something So Strong' by Chirs Bourke (MacMillan, 1997)is also a great read if you are interested in finn-related books. I also think Neil brought out a small book with his last tour but i'm not sure. I would love to get my hands on a copy of 'Stranger Than Fiction'. I think it was published in 1991.

Re: Relevance of the Finns in the music industry
On a more serious note, for the last 25 YEARS it has been consistently believed in the music world that the Finn, Split Enz and Crowded House were making music OUTSIDE THEIR TIME. No-one ever called Split Enz relevant in the 70s and 80s - they were always, to quote a music journalist of the day, 'Just outside their time' and just out of the mainstream. To paraphrase Rolling Stone, 'Neil could have written anything, in any style of music and had hits coming out of his proverbial, but he chose...

Re: books ..?
The copyright is 1992. I seems to have been a happy time for the Finns. Crowded House was becoming famous and Tim Finn had high hopes on a solo career. I can not put that book down!

Re: Bootlegs, Taboo????
I know Neil doesn't like people ripping off his studio work (He actually joined " Burn & be burned " - an anti-piracy orgainisation at the start of the year ), but I'm still not sure about his opinions on bootlegging. Ripping off fanclub CDs is obviously wrong (and you defenitley can't discuss that here ), but downloading unaccessible (any other way) live shows should be fine... (IMO) as long as you can justify it to yourself (I'm sure Neil wouldn't have a problem with someone obtaining...

Re: Split Enz DVD thoughts
I forgot to mention another sad piece of trivia that got me all excited! When I was watching the Anniversary clip of Shark Attack, I noticed that the percussion roles were reversed. Noel playing drums, and Paul playing percussion. Was this standard for the anniversary tour? I always presumed it was noel playing the hi hats on the anniversary version of Strait Old Line, and speaking of this version of the song, has anyone noticed the absence of any vocals by Tim (except 'everybody into the...

I was awestruck by the number of irrelevant floats and people they manage to put together every year...kind of like... "...and here we have, strutting proudly down the avenue, a float depicting an entire flock of pink flamingoes, and wait, there's someone on top of the float with the flamingoes....hey! It's Marilyn Manson, going to share a holiday hit from the broadway musical 'Felching Under the Stairs.'" "...and the next float looks like a big pizza with dancing pepperoni's and...

Yeah, especially when you people get Neil touring all year... and One All - yep, it must be a real shame . But seriously, I buy anything Neil Finn -related I can get my hands on (I even bought his book - Love This Life ... for AU$28 ). I actually bought the 7 Worlds Collide DVD without even owning a DVD player! - that's dedication for you! It sent me broke again, but at least I can have years of enjoyment out of it ... actually that won't be the case unless I can get hold of a DVD player...

Re: Bootlegs, Taboo????
Agreement with Paul H on that note. boarderGurl - thanks for posting those quotes from Neil. Neil Finn 's pretty quick & witty when he comes to replying to things. He's also quite funny & laid-back, so I doubt he'd get all emotional at a concert in front of thousands of people telling the guy that what he did was wrong & illeagal & how the artists are losing out on this... Yes, I know your comment ( "we have permission from the man himself"] ) was a joke & all, but Neil...

Yes - very sad that the ABC have thrown away large amounts of timeless history, but they'd still have the VHS versions, right? I know material from VHS isn't as good as what usually gets put onto DVD, but earlier this year I taped the i983 Countdown Awards with Tim presenting a couple of awards & I also think he won 1 or 2 awards... I can't really remember, but it was really good quality (picture & audio wise), so what would be the main reason that kind of material couldn't make the...

Re: Split Enz DVD thoughts
Gawd no- they threw away about 90%, very little is ever kept on video.....they have one or two "video only" Enz copies but most of the Countdowns GTKS etc etc have all gone. I think I have more VHS stuff and we are transfering it now but you can't really use it on DVD without major work...(refer to ten million previous posts), so no they didn't convert.... plus think of the time it would take to convert everything.....probably tensof thousands of hours...'83 Countdown awards exists as an...

Wow Paul H, you took that WAY too seriously. I can see it now: I'll start my own Neil Finn pirating company, and when I get sued in court my defense will be, "But Neil SAID I could!" Yikes, chill out. The entire POINT of that post was to illustrate Neil's liberal stance on the subject in general, not to condone, or in ANY way imply that Neil condones illegal copying of music. Neil was just being Neil.......chatting comfortably with the hundred or so of us fans that turned up for the free...

Re: Bootlegs, Taboo????
Without making this any sort of official comment as I always prefer to leave stuff like that up to Neil, all of us have always been fine about fans swapping live material. The main thing has always been to keep it subtle. The times when we will get heavy (put on my Docs now) is when someone takes full advantage of fans. Example: a few years back (no names please) a club member who was one of the first Life members got a copy of "stage talk" with his kit (we included them in a lot, just as a...

Thanks, Peter. You're the man. This morning before I came to work, I just couldn't resist putting on the DVD just to watch that hilarious "GTK" feature. So funny! I love Phil's response. It's a shame that there is so little footage remaining from the pre- Dizrythmia period. I feel that the Mental Notes line-up is the quintessential, classic incarnation of the Enz. One thing more I will say about this DVD is that it only fires one's desire for more Enz footage. You can't get too much of a...

I don't wanna sound negative here but I like playing The Devil's Advocate . If you compare the SE dvd against it's Australasian Top 20 chart competitors on the DVD market place like George, Something For Kate, Kasey Chambers, Silverchair & Regurgitator it does come up a tad bit weak. The SFK DVD has about 40 separate clips of live and studio versions as seen here: http://www.hmv.com.au/v4/product/dvd.asp?sku=849776 The reason why I'm comparing these two bands is that Neil Finn is listed...

Nice post, Peter . (I just thought you might have problems sleeping tonight if someone else didn't compliment you on your fantastic post ). Did anyone ever consider that the people paying that sort of price for dodgy bootlegs of fanclub CDs must already be pretty massive fans & would have probably already brought Neil Finn 's complete back catalogue? Just a thought. I'm sure that thought had already entered everyone's minds, but still worth mentioning... at least I thought it was ... The...

The only problem is getting it to him, though. Because they don't like people sending Neil tapes or CDs. I had an address where I could send my CD where I knew he'd get, and mailed him to ask if it was ok, and then Alice (from 'the office of Neil Finn' I think) said no, please don't send CDs or tapes to Neil. I think it's because he has too much stuff sent to him anyway. has anyone else ever had that?

Yep, the track on Other Enz is the same Finn/Judd composition, but it's not a genuine Split Enz recording as such. It was released as the B-side of a 1980 single by Graham Brazier (ex Hello Sailor) and credited to "A Ripper Bunch of Blokes." The "blokes" who played on the recording included Mike Chunn, Eddie Rayner, Rob Gillies, and Mal Green. Part of the tune was later used in "I Wouldn't Dream of It" on True Colours .

Re: The Instrumental
'The Instrumental' is an awesome song, but sadly, it seems that it's another "lost" song from the early Judd/Finn era that was never properly recorded in a studio...along with scores of others, e.g. 'Wise Men', 'Buffs', 'City Of Dreams', 'True Colours', 'Prophecy', 'Hermine'........
