Re: Intriguer Deluxe Reissue discussion

Whysus ·
I am really loving all the bonus discs and while very hard to pick a favourite, Intriguer may just be it for me. It is the one I find myself going back to the most. It may be due to my mild disappointment when the original album came out. I was at Leigh Saw Mill when they first trialled the songs, and I was disappointed that my favourite songs from that night either didn't make the cut or had be drastically changed. I also struggled with the cover art work a bit too. For me, it was the first...

I'm a bit embarrassed. Even though the original came with lyrics, I guess I never looked too closely. The line in Archer's Arrows that I have always heard as "Kids get sand on the floor, they make it a work of art" is actually "Kids KISSING on the floor". I like my line better; I had this mental image of kids coming in sandy from the beach and getting sand all over the floor, moving it around until it makes a work of art. Kids kissing? Seems a bit creepy.

C mon , Steve... isnt every kiss about to be sexual. Whats creepy about innocent kids kissing? My little daughter Tara (4, 5) every now and then huging and kissing (on departure or something like that) with friends (girls)... we are teaching her to be warm and tender... nothing creepy about that... I like that line in "Archers Arrows", and whole idea of it...reminds me of those paintings with little angels playing, dancing and kissing..

I love the line, but I've always thought "making too much of it" is exactly Neil's point. If you saw 2 kids kissing on the floor, you would (more than likely) appreciate the beauty of their innocence and affection. But if someone hangs a picture of the same scene in an art gallery, people pick it apart and pervert it.

Two years ago, I edited many mini-audio documentaries about Together Alone for publishing on Crowded House Facebook, but only a few went online. As with the other album docos, they feature Neil and Nick talking about the songs, the sessions and art work, along with audio from the recording sessions. On the album’s 25th anniversary two days ago, I remembered I still had these unpublished episodes on hold, so am sharing them one by one at http://www.neilfinn.com/together-alone throughout the...

Totally agree. The great thing about art is: There are no rules. Try stuff out! FM found themselves in this situation, they found a way to deal with it that felt good. Good! See what happens and go from there. That's why I think arbitrary generalisations like " X doesn't work/without Y" etc. (especially before anything substantial has happened to support/falsify this hypothesis) kind of miss the point... (The Crowded House universe has been there too, haven't we?)

Re: Interview with Stuart Ellison - Periscope studio engineer (part 2)

It'd be interesting to know how much of the so called Still Life demos are recorded with Stuart Ellison and which were recorded earlier and which he then added parts to. There are versions of "Persuasion" and "Funny Way" on there and "Persuasion" in particular is quite different from the album; but frankly, it's terrible in comparison with the finished Mark Hart-produced song to my ears -- but Stuart doesn't seem to like the album version at all. I could not disagree with him more. Different...

Sweet! thanks for sharing, Gryph. I really enjoyed an interview back in 2007 where Nick described the themes of the Time On Earth cover. Neil was taken aback by the "deepness" of meaning. I would love to hear his musings on this cover as well as the rest of the discography. His art is not overlooked in our home.

Stevie Nicks has denied being abused by Lindsey Buckingham and said then he only went after her after some ridiculous behavior in the 1980s where she attacked him first. So I agree, there are two sides to the story. Both are extremely eccentric personalities and presences - the whole group s for a mainstream elite classic rock band. Since Buckingham Nicks joined, its essentially been the 5 key players over the past 40 years. When Buckingham left on his own in accord in the late 80s, he was...

Have you read the book "Storms" by Carol Ann Harris? Most who read that book see Lindsey differently. A lot of victims of abuse later deny the abuse for various reasons so it's not surprising that Stevie denies it now. Christine has confirmed what happened and it's pretty bad stuff. Stevie clearly has a lot of resentment towards Lindsey and I'm sure most of it comes from the way he treated her for all those years. As far as the legal case, the band has a very strong case. Lindsey didn't have...

I think Monsieur Nicks thoughts on the album musically pretty much are the same as mine (right down to feelings about certain songs) so I don’t need to repeat that. After hearing most of the songs on the tour, I did have some concerns. Like many I was hoping for an upbeat guitar album , and after hearing the songs on tour, I knew it wouldn’t be that! I much prefer Neil with a guitar strapped to him rocking out than behind a keyboard. So while this isn’t the album I originally was hoping for,...

Yes, you can admit that the album’s soft ambience is well-crafted, and that there are a few nice snatches of melody here and there, but still ... you find that none of the songs, nor the album’s feel as a whole, really grabs you enough to make...

On a related note, which has your favourite cover art? I can't go past Time on Earth. Every time I look at it, I think of 1. Paul Hester and 2. What a talented artist Nick Seymour is. I daresay it captured the emotions of the band at the time- a sombre sense of loss and a feeling that creativity would be the best way to heal.

Sadly Thelonius & Bella do share a kind of tragic "genius" of a sort, they both had drug addictions that probably did little to prolong their careers (although with Bella...

Not too long after it was released, on one of my aimless teenage Saturdays "in town", I was browsing the local library for albums to borrow when the distinctive cover of Woodface caught my eye. (Thank god for Nick's art!) The album ended up as the B-side to one of my home-made cassettes (The La's was the A-side; guess which of the two albums I still listen to?), and that was that.
