Re: Split Enz DVD thoughts

I don't wanna sound negative here but I like playing The Devil's Advocate . If you compare the SE dvd against it's Australasian Top 20 chart competitors on the DVD market place like George, Something For Kate, Kasey Chambers, Silverchair & Regurgitator it does come up a tad bit weak. The SFK DVD has about 40 separate clips of live and studio versions as seen here: http://www.hmv.com.au/v4/product/dvd.asp?sku=849776 The reason why I'm comparing these two bands is that Neil Finn is listed...

Hey "S. God"....like all charts the ARIA DVD chart goes by sales from certain stores...HMV etc. Targets and Woolies rarely count towards chart points BUT I prefer 5000 fans to buy it at $28 from Target then $36 at HMV if it means losing a few chart points no big deal....so in reality tthe Enz might be selling more then some of those artists but people are buying the DVD from a non chart store. That's what is happening with the Enz DVD, most sales are from cheaper stores. The Enz have sold...

Good point. I'm also pretty sure 100% of record sales from SAN!TY don't count towards the Aria chart either; they have their own chart (too cool for the rest of the nation ), so it might even be worth looking on the SAN!TY chart for Dreaming , although last time I checked they only had a top 50 singles & albums chart (not a DVD chart, but I couldn't be certain). Chart Update: Aria* haven't updated their DVD chart this week .

I'm kind of an astrology freak and have many books on the subject, but yeh it's hard to do a birth chart if you dont know what time he was born. Anyway, if you combine the sun sign (gemini) with his chinese horoscope (dog) it says 'he often lacks inner balance, as he is always edgy and on the defnsive. He adopts extreme, conflicting attitudes, as if to emphasise the duality belonging to the sign of Gemini. The more he appears fatalistic and clear-headed, going out of his way to be derisive...

I remember reading that both Finn brothers were born at home (rather than a hospital), Teasdale Street in Te Awamutu. While that would certainly help in figuring out the birth-chart stuff you're talking about, I think you also have to know what time of the DAY someone was born, don't you? You might get a reasonably accurate birth chart based on date and location, but when I did the ones for my kids a couple years ago, the exact time of day was a factor.

He did a beautiful acoustic version of rest of the day off as part of his Live @ The Chapel television gig in 2001 & he obviously played it heaps around that time (being the opening Australian single & all), but with a back catalogue like Neil's, you just HAVE to cull some of the songs to fit the new ones & make way for other old classics - pity . soctheo - What do you mean by "Internet Only Video"? Interesting that we're already having a discourse about this kind of stuff, and at a (Unitarian) church service I attended on Easter, which included a lot about how many traditional Easter things (eggs, bunnies) actually relate to a Pagan spring ritual, they were doing this thing with runes. You were to pick an egg from the basket, dye it after the service and then the rune (which had been drawn in white crayon) would show up, and you'd look it up on a nearby wall chart to see what your...

I had Fast 1 & 2, Medium 1 & 2, Slow 1 & 2. We hand-picked every song, made a chart for the DJ's with which songs were where and how long each one was, and said, play whatever you want with these CD's. The Perseids are one of the most reliable meteor showers, every August, and often have fast, bright meteors that leave trails. So, yes, Kia Kaha, that's probably what you saw! I've been watching meteors since at least 1977 when I recorded tracks of the April Lyrids on a star chart for an 'O' level Astronomy project. It's warmer in August! I like this Finn connection - some (maybe all?) meteor showers are associated with comets, they are the dust spread out along the orbit by the Tail Of A...

For purposes such as these, a song's peak chart position is normally used because that effectively corresponds to the height of its popularity. At the very least, DDIO was released as a single at the tail end of 1986, so the vast majority of its radio spins, video plays, and sales were in 1987. Therefore, it's a song of 1987. Yeah, well, it was bigger here, so we have better taste.

Check out the Split Enz DVD Thoughts thread where someone unfavorably compared the Enz DVD to the Something for Kate DVD. The responses from Peter Green et al. apply to the Erasure comparison too. Also, Erasure had much more chart success in Britain and America than Split Enz, and therefore (whether we like it or not) many people would regard Erasure as the "bigger" band -- in commercial terms anyway.

Wow -- that is a surprise. (In fact, any time the Finns surface in mainstream U.S. media it's a surprise.) But maybe they'll re-name the film BECAUSE OF FINN DIXIE.

What I got for Everyone Is Here : - 3x platinum in New Zealand (45,000) - 2xgold in Australia (70,000) - silver in the UK (60,000) Those sales & certifications need to be updated. Other Charts stats for EIH without sales : - #18 in Ireland, #27 in Belgium (Flanders) and #139 in the USA. So it's probably over 200,000 copies. For their first album, I can't find anything but small chart positions : #14 in Australia (17 weeks) and #15 in the UK.

On my copy of ToE, the sticker on the cd wrap listed Don't Stop Down and She Called Up. In the States, that usually means that these are the songs that will marketed on the singles chart. Well, we need to ask ourselves what band couldn't make the effort to be in their own clip? (One who doesn't need the sales, you might say.) Not that a band needs to be in a clip for it to be successful, but THIS??!! Look at the quality of most of the stuff on the Dreaming DVD, it's stood the test of time, it's still interesting to watch today, and then watch the She Called Up video again. This clip won't get played, it'll kill the chances of 'breaking' the single or even the band overseas...

Well I am not a fan of a lot of the old CH videos and I find a lot of them have not stood the test of time for me personally. Some of them make me cringe quite frankly! I disagree that the clip won't get played, any more than DSN. It won't make or break the single either IMO. For every person that thinks it is badly made/a terrible idea there seems to be another who thinks the opposite. A live montage may have been a more rewarding format for the fans. I agree with a couple of you there.

I'd have to agree with the general feeling that a third single probably won't happen, especially given that: She Called Up isn't available outside the UK (excpet on itunes etc and does that count for chart performance?) I'm sure I heard somewhere that the band are going back into the studio in the new year However, just for the sake of capitalising on my $0.02, I'd say Pour Le Monde would make a great single. Not necessarily. Can't tell HOW many people I've managed to turn on to "Everything But The Girl" after they could go "ah, yes, that Todd Terry song , yes, lemme hear some of their other stuff". Sadly, without the band here to promote it, I think releasing TIYL now will be a case of too little too late - unless they can get it tied into a TV show or some other promo opportunity. It might get on the Radio 2 C or B playlist and generate a few extra sales for the album, but it all seems a bit after the event to me. It'll be interesting to see the reaction they get when they parade "Twice If Your Lucky" in front of the Winery tour crowd .. Once upon a time (when the singles chart was about how many, um, singles) a band could sell CH had a chance of sneaking into the middle reaches of the chart on hardcore fan sales alone. This was predicated on putting new material on several formats. The advent of downloads has changed all that. Firstly, sales of "singles" has gone through the roof as a result of the definition of "single" being widened to include any song you can download. Thus, CH need to sell far far more copies in order...
