Re: Split Enz DVD thoughts

I think they could have saved a lot of space by not doubling even tripling the sound bytes in the DISCOGRAPHY. What I mean is they had 3 best of albums and ALL the songs were re-listed as sound bytes, so what you have is many samples of the same song scattered throughout which is pretty pointless I think IMHO. I don't know how much DVD space that takes up but if it takes up a lot I'd MUCH rather wish to have all the video clips in like I Don't Wanna Dance, Next Exit & Never Ceases To...

I forgot to mention another sad piece of trivia that got me all excited! When I was watching the Anniversary clip of Shark Attack, I noticed that the percussion roles were reversed. Noel playing drums, and Paul playing percussion. Was this standard for the anniversary tour? I always presumed it was noel playing the hi hats on the anniversary version of Strait Old Line, and speaking of this version of the song, has anyone noticed the absence of any vocals by Tim (except 'everybody into the...

Without making this any sort of official comment as I always prefer to leave stuff like that up to Neil, all of us have always been fine about fans swapping live material. The main thing has always been to keep it subtle. The times when we will get heavy (put on my Docs now) is when someone takes full advantage of fans. Example: a few years back (no names please) a club member who was one of the first Life members got a copy of "stage talk" with his kit (we included them in a lot, just as a...

'The Instrumental' is an awesome song, but sadly, it seems that it's another "lost" song from the early Judd/Finn era that was never properly recorded in a studio...along with scores of others, e.g. 'Wise Men', 'Buffs', 'City Of Dreams', 'True Colours', 'Prophecy', 'Hermine'........

I just think for the amount of experience the guy has, and the amount of talent the guy has, his playing isn't necessarily very original, unusually skillful, or very passionate -- but understated rather than distinctive....things that usually grab me right away. I am referring mostly to his solo work, although can think of a couple CH examples where I felt this was the case. I think moreso than "annoying" with MH (in his case, that's the wrong word to have used...), it's a case where the...

I got my copy at Target Roselands for AU$26.95 - cheap compared to HMV etc. Love how Neil Finn sings on This Is Massive (originally studio Paul Hester sings it) - it's at the start of the Catch 22 interview Mean To Me intro playing softly but hear-able in the back ground - I'd love for that to come out as Afterglow 2 rare song - it sounds so good. Plus were any frenz fans at the CD / book store signing autograph in the US on the Catch 22 interview? You all looked so yound, fresh fanned and good!

Good list, Bono . I think you pretty much covered it. Most of those songs are probably the ones you'd use to get someone into the artists. Donovan - Your list wasn't really all that much different to Bono 's (the one you ripped shreds into) - you just selected different bands with basically the same style... although your selection must be way superior! The Mavis's - cry george (probably not "party music", but classic stuff) Paul Kelly (take your pick!) Savage Garden (again, take your pick.

i heard a sample on amazon, and i was not impressed. i would normally appreciate people covering DDIO, getting it out there, spreading the good word, etc., but i got tired of that after paul young and sixpence none the richer. all these covers sound the same. nobody seems to even realize that it's a SAD SONG. SAD SONG people!!! Not appropriate for a disney soundtrack, as some of these covers would have me think. I guess I have no choice but to do it myself.

That's exactly what I have been thinking.. Especially since I heard the sixpence version, why did they have to raise everything by a semitone? Well, probably to suit the singer's voice, which isn't really appropriate for this song anyway.

Oh, I think you're falling into the same trap as the cover artists: you're selling the song a little short. It's not just a sad song. It's a sad song with an underlying sense of hope. Not only that, but the sense of hope is complex -- it seems as if Neil is simultaneously asking for reassurance while trying to reassure the listener. At any rate, there's a melancholy longing that no one (except Neil) has been able to express. That being said, I don't hate any of the various cover versions,...

IMO, it would be an ridiculously unfavorable comparison. The lead is good for the most part, but he is certainly not in Neil's league. Fair enough. I can accept your majority very negative opinions Frenz. But IMHHO we should be encouraging MORE artists to cover Finn songs -as if 2 give them more exposure. Personally I would take it as a compliment if any1 covered my song, no matter who or what genre artist does it. Remember these/any artists spend their whole life working hard on their craft. Does a Tim Finn injury count? We saw him in Napier, New Zealand on Oct. 12, 2001...and during the jam session part of "Weather With You," Tim was twirling his guitar around, in preparation to go back into the chorus, and the end of the guitar whacked him right in the head, pretty hard! You could hear the whole crowd go, "OOOOH!" and it obviously had to hurt, because we were in the front row and heard the WHACK it made. It left a big red mark, and I hope he used ice later. Nobody would have...

V2001, Powderfinger had just finished and they were running out of time before Neil Finn was meant to be on, so my friend & I thought we'd be fine staying where we were (about 2/3 rows of people back from the barriers, roughly in the middle of the crowd) when on came some band whose name began with I. Much as I adore Neil's music and (if I'm honest) don't think much of Tim's work (with a few exceptions), it can't be denied that a) CH's (and therefore by connection, Neil's) most famous song was mostly Tim's, and b) CH's most succesful CD was mostly co-composed with Tim. I think it just shows that they work very well together, rather than that Neil needs Tim to get commercial success. Clearly that didn't happen with the Finn CD. Its simply that the with-Tim Woodface was the right record at...

Although I'm a huge Neil and a not so huge Tim-fan, I do agree with you. Without Tim, Woodface would have been a good, but average CH-album. With Tim the album is more diverse and up-tempo.Tim give the album a fresh and uplifting sound. I always liked Split Enz and CH, but only became a huge fan since I heard WWY for the first time on the radio. I couldn't believe my ears! I pretty much agree with what you say here, P.F. I can't really describe the effect that Neil's songs have on me, other than to say that they reach somewhere deep down inside me and wrap themselves around my heart in a way that I haven't experienced with any other songwriter. But having said that, that can be an intense feeling that can get overwhelming in large doses. I don't really feel that Tim adds what Neil is "lacking," but rather he adds a different dimension to the music, that breaks...

Speaking as an American, CH's most successful song is DDIO (and rightly so, I'd say). Also, I'm another huge Neil fan who can take or leave a lot of Tim's material. Anyway, I think most fans can agree that the merits of CH can't be measured by sales or popularity. From my POV, the strongest songs on Woodface (with the notable exceptions of HWYG and There Goes God) are the songs Tim didn't co-write (W&M, FAYF, Fame Is, As Sure As I Am, She Goes On). Of course, I fully recognize that I'm...

Good topic. I voted for Tim making a major contribution to Woodface but... On my non-musically trained instinct ears WWY, ION, CC - the singles/songs represented most popularly on WF, Neil Finn takes lead vocals and sounds more like NF singing it all by himself . I've often wondered about this. On closer listening Tim does make a substantial singing input on those songs plus other ones on WF like the obvious classic Tim penned solo All I Ask (Which when I heard on the OZ Planet Ark...
