Re: Interview with Stuart Ellison - Periscope studio engineer (part 2)

mattl ·
Thanks so much for sharing this interview! I'm particularly fascinated with the comments about "In Love With it All" and "Strangeness and Charm," which always sounded like Woodface outtakes to my ears. So it's pretty interesting to me that Ellison seems to think those songs were part of what Crowded House was doing at the time (even if Nick and Paul weren't involved). Jaffaman, can you shed any light on that? Were those two Finn Brothers songs ever considered for Woodface? What's the scoop? ...

Digital Album Releases

OKAlrightAHuhOhYeah ·
I'm an American. I'm also a 20-something, so I no longer have CD players (i never thought the day would come). So I pretty much buy all my music digitally, now. I found Tim's debut, I found big canoe, the view, say it is so, imaginary kingdom, even a couple others. Any word/reason/other on why his s/t album hasn't been released digitally yet? That's the one i'm dying to obtain. But it seems to be the only one not on any digital music retailer. Makes me sad.

Rank every band/project/solo work

The Pineapple Head ·
Here's a fun game. Let's rank every band/project done with the Finn Bros and solo work. To jog our memory here's a list of all the projects in the form of my ranking (by my count). I'm also separating Crowded House/Split Enz into two "eras". 1) Crowded House v.1 (1985-1996) 2) Finn Brothers 3) Neil Finn Solo Work 4) Tim Finn Solo Work 5) Crowded House v.2 (2007-2011/2016) 6) Split Enz v.1 (Judd Era) 7) Pajama Club 8) 7 Worlds Collide 9) Split Enz v.2 (Non Judd Era) 10) The Mullanes If I've...

Interview with Stuart Ellison - Periscope studio engineer (part 1)

Guy. ·
While discussing the Woodface album at the Steve Hoffman forum I came across someone's name in the Woodface CD booklet I knew nothing about. I wondered who this Stuart Ellison is who is credited with "additional keyboards". I tracked him down online and found out he was happy to partake in an interview. I realised that in his capacity as engineer at Tim's Melbourne Periscope Studio he had a significantly larger role in the creation of Woodface than previously known. So, as a fun pastime,...

Interview with Stuart Ellison - Periscope studio engineer (part 2)

Guy. ·
After we had discussed the recording of Woodface we spent some time talking about the songs Tim recorded during that same time but set aside for his solo projects - mainly his next solo record Before & After. We also returned to discussing the unused version of Crowded House's "It's Only Natural" with sampled drum beats. Because part 1 of the interview is more about Woodface I posted that in the Crowded House forum. Part 2 which is mostly about the demos for Before & After fits...

Woodface: 30th Anniversary Box Set

Secret God (Stew) ·
How would you like to see Crowded House perform a Woodface 30th Anniversary tour in 2021 to promote a Woodface box set? For anyone interested, I wrote up the full details of my concept here , and even created some basic concept cover art for the box.

Where to start?

I'm slightly unsure where to start with Tim's solo work. I can't seem to find a general consensus of 'best' album/s. What do you guys think I should get first?

Re: Interview with Stuart Ellison - Periscope studio engineer (part 2)

Steve Shealy ·
I've long been fascinated by the period when the attempted third CH album "absorbed" some of the attempted Finn Brothers album and morphed into Tim joining CH for Woodface. And I knew some songs wound up on Before and After, but never knew Tim was also working on a solo album (Still Life?) at the time. So there there three albums in the works simultaneously (!). Would love to hear more about Still Life, if anyone has anything else to share (thanks for your insight, Lance). Wow, a flow chart...

It's a very complicated saga, Woodface. Here's what I've put together: The band records some songs in 1989; Neil is producing; Nick is fired for about a month, they record without him with Neil or "Joe Somebody" playing bass. (Some of these Nickless songs are on Afterglow. ) Tim and Neil record Murchison Street demos in late 1989 for proposed project to be recorded after the third Crowded House and tour. In late 1989/early 1990, Crowded House and Split Enz play a short tour together. Mark...

Wow. Can i say the bullet pointed detail of the above post is the best thing thats appeared here in years. Well done. full of deets, intrigue, successes, failures, a succinct potted history that doesnt airbrush a thing. Well played. Five stars. i look forward to someone doing the same unvarnished thing with what happened to matt and mark at some point... something that still leaves me cold.

Lance, I also liked your dot points as well to the Woodface history. Just a few things... - I loved what Mark said when they asked him to join the band, "Sure, I'm flattered, I'll do it." Didn't he sound so humble. No wonder he won them over (well, perhaps the oatmeal played a part too! **humour**) - Reading the SSS book, it was actually the two managers/attorneys Grant Thomas and Gary Stamler who discussed Mark Hart should be back in the band for keyboards for the US tour. They suggested...

Well, thanks but really it's Guy's amazingly illuminating interview with Stuart Ellison that shed so much light on this era; I simply just summarized the Bourke book, which is a little muddy about this ear, perhaps intentionally.
