Bhuja TV: "Show and Tell with Neil Finn"

Mica ·
Neil has had another run-in with Leigh Hart & Jason Hoyte on "Bhuja" TV/radio (remember that 'late big breakfast (??)' show with the Monogolian throat singer last year or so?): http://www.watchme.co.nz/entertainment/bhuja-tv/season-1/show-and-tell-with-neil-finn/ Cue his well-practised "confused" face, with some proper (fake) anger thrown in this time. His comedic timing is not bad at all. This show isn't everyone's cup of tea, but I really enjoyed it, and Neil looks relaxed and happy.

I have a different take---I feel like Neil's work is clearly differentiated depending on the outlet for it. Take Pajama Club or his new solo CD (or his previous solo CD's for that matter). I think Neil tends to write much more in an accessible style for Crowded House, especially comparing his contemporary work with CH & CH Mark II. His classic "Leonard (Cohen)-McCartney" (in his words) songs that distinguish CH are not found much at all on his recent work. He allows himself much more...

Not sure if it was you, Noni, who I already said this too: Do not get the writing tattooed too small! I made that mistake and the black ink ran under my skin, making the writing blurry and illegible. What lyrics are you thinking of getting done?

You did not say that to me, but I have read that. Thanks for the heads up! I've always thought I'd get "seven worlds will collide", but my all-time favorite Neil song is Devil You Know. So now I am doubting myself! If I ever met him and had the opportunity to ask him to write something down for me, I'm not sure in the moment which I'd choose. Thanks for the sample of his writing! I would love some more pictures if anyone has anything!

Lol just up Neil's alley ..I can see why some people did not get the joke .. You have to know the persona of the hosts and and downunder humour I think. Neil is so good at pretending to be serious that it made it even better. He is great at not cracking up too. Only once did I see slight amusement in his eyes and a hint of a grin.

I'm wondering if Neil's announcement that he's working on a solo and another project with Liam means that CH is essentially through? Perhaps the upcoming reissues are essentially a denouement.

I hope you are all right. But given Neil's inclination to work solo or with family & friends, this is the last new material we're going to hear from CH ("new" meaning original stuff we haven't heard). Otherwise, after he does do promotion for these re-issues, how long will it be before his next solo work? Or something with Liam, or Tim? What about touring after any or all of these efforts? I just can't imagine when he would bring the members of the band together to record a new record...

I would also add that if you break up Neil's career into decades you get the following averages: 1986-1995 - New album every 28.0 months 1996-2005 - New album every 35.3 months 2006-2014 - New album every 28.5 months So while not quite releasing new materials on pace with the original Crowded House albums (and Finn), he's certainly picked up the pace from the long slog of 1996-2005 when he only released three albums of new material.

Personally I think that Crowded House version 2 was doomed from the start due to the simple fact that the reunion album (Time on Earth) was more of a Neil Finn solo album. Their first "proper" album (Intriguer) could have been a lot better and I think that it was a missed opportunity.

I'm at the point where I'm just thrilled that any of my favorite musicians are continuing to create new music and/or tour. We just purchased tickets to see ELO, Finnwood Mac, and Rosanne Cash and I'm beyond happy that these acts continue to tour even when they technically don't need to at this point. I just hope that Neil continues to follow his muse wherever that takes him whether it's solo, Crowded House, Finn Brothers, or whatever.

I agree with Stuart that it's the chemistry of the band I yearn for. It's just that I agree with Awamutu that it was lost when the drummer changed back in 1994. CH has been a fine band since; they've made some wonderful music that stands on its own, but so has Neil outside of CH. And, for my money, there's little difference now between Neil solo and CH, but a world of difference between current CH and the CH of 1992-93. I'll happily take a new CH album but I'd be no more excited for a new CH...

I don't think that's the case. On a radio show a few months back they asked him if he's working on solo projects, a family band album, Finn Brothers or Crowded House next and he said something like "all of the above, I'm not sure what will emerge first." He also said in the not too distant past, that Crowded House are "up on blocks in the garage" - dormant but still existing. With all that said, I bet it'll be several years, given his current projects, before we hear anything new from...

Re: Any Best Of Neil Finn (Solo)?

Paināporo ·
Excellent. Here's what I recommend. You see the problem with Neil Finn is that his best songs are almost always slow or mid-tempo middle of the road pop songs. Don't get my wrong, they're the best songs ever written, but when you put them all together the result can be a bit dull. So you gotta spice it up with some of Neil's more interesting material. Otherwise you'll lose your listener. With that in mind, I like something along these lines: Bodhisattva Blues - 7 World Collide Can't Put It...

I agree, it's all about waiting around to find out. It's never a sure thing. Who knows what commitments Neil may have after each gig. he may need to hit the road right away, he may be tired and ready for bed. I don't always wait around. it depends on who I'm with and how far I have to drive to get home. However, the couple times I have waited around, I've never been disappointed. Back in 2005 I got to meet both Neil and Tim and have them sign my Finn scrapbook!

And Some fans have even had the setlist from the show autographed as well. I suggest ya bring a CD or photo to have autographed. Neil is very generous with his time when he can do so. So it's worth staying around afterwards to try and connect with him. Have a wonderful time at the show tonight!!!

Re: Does anyone know what guitars Neil uses?

slowpogo ·
Here's what I know, I'm sure others can fill in details. Neil tends to play Maton acoustics and favors small body models like parlor size, which Maton calls "808" for some reason. (Maybe relates to the TWT B-side "808 Song"?) Electric, he often plays a Gibson Les Paul Deluxe gold top with mini humbuckers, a vintage late 50s/early 60s model. He also plays a vintage red Gretsch Jet (especially recently with Fleetwood Mac). Those two are probably his most often used electrics on stage, though...

Just a couple of addendum's to Pogo's excellent overview: - Neil's main amp setup on stage at least since '07 (not sure how far back this goes) is to have both a Fender Deluxe and an AC15 running together. - Isn't his Les Paul Deluxe an early 70s? I could have that wrong but I don't think the mini hum models existed until then. - He picked up a black Gretsch sometime in '08 which he's used pretty frequently since as well. - His on stage 12 string electric is a Maton Fyrbyrd, usually seen on...

Thanks for the added details. It looks like the LP Deluxe with minis was first available in 1968. Maybe I subconsciously meant late 60s/early 70s? An awesome guitar anyway, and it’s the one Tim Pierce believes he used to record Don’t Dream It’s Over.

Re: Given Neil's Announcement, is CH Through?

The last few years Neil has talked a big game about upping his output, saying he wants to release an album every year and things like that. But so far it's been business as usual. If he ever actually works as quickly as he wants to, we could see a CH album a lot sooner than 10 years. Actually, if it was next after the current projects, at his regular pace it would still be sooner than that (I'd guess 5ish years). Not holding my breath though...

Hi Slowpogo: You're right, I phrased it wrong. I meant to say that any new CH record will likely be 10 years (at least) from Intriguer; the same gap there was before Time On Earth. Which I find astonishing; I never thought we'd see such a long break again, that is, without breaking up the band for good.

Re: Given Neil's Announcement, is CH Through?

Paināporo ·
The average time it takes for Neil to put out an album of all new material is 30 months. Neil generally releases *something* every 20 months (new album, live album, rarities collection, etc.). It's been 27 months since Neil released Dizzy Heights, so we are overdue for something this year (probably the box set). The longest time Neil has gone without releasing anything was 36 months between Temple of Low Men and Woodface. The second longest time was between Pajama Club and Dizzy Heights at...

A band exists until the members decide that it doesn't any more. And even then they can change their mind. The Eagles: "Hell Freezes Over". I guess that everyone will be able to guess why that album was called what it was. Neil basically will be able to convene CH pretty much any time he wants to. I'm not sure if I hope he does; I'm happy with whatever he blesses us with.

Re: Given Neil's Announcement, is CH Through?

Patrick ·
If Neil wants do record a new CH record - what I personally hope - with the existing members, it had to be in the next 1-3 years. Remember, Mark Hart is 62 already, and the other members aren't getting younger too...So I doubt "it'll be years and years from now..", especially when it comes to touring. If there will be a new CH record, it has to be in the very near future. That's just MHO.

I was thinking something very similar, Patrick. I don't think there are "years and years" left, even for Neil himself when it comes to touring. Having made that trip to NZ from the east coast of the US twice myself, I can't imagine that getting any easier with age.

Wouldn't it be great if the "solo" album he's been working on turns out to be a new Crowded House album they've been working on in secret? I realize the chances of that are like 2%, but it would be a pretty great surprise.

If Crowded House are finished, I'm just going to borrow Ian Brown's words when he referred to the reunion of The Stone Roses: "don't be sad that it's finished. Just be happy that you saw it happen." As someone who was far too young to appreciate Crowded House in the 1990s or even attend a gig of theirs, I was glad I got to see them when finally did. I even got to see Paul in his final ever performance with Neil and Tim when they played The Palais.
