4. Try Whistling This/Spirit if the Stairs. Hard to decide, and feels like cheating cause I partly consider Spirit of the Stairs as CH song, but Neil solo definitely improved it... and when I looking at it, noticed that even 2 of 5 songs wasnt even on official releases...so much about whoever choosed songs for official albums...

Re: Top 4 Neil Finn Solo Songs
Wow ... this is nearly impossible but here goes in no particular order ... and I can't keep it to four songs ... sorry but I couldn't narrow it past the top ten. Songs are posted below ... 1. Lullaby Requiem (may be my favorite Neil Finn song period) 2. Guiding Star (affects me deeply every time I hear it) 3. Blue Hotel (obscure song but brilliant ... oh so brilliant) 4. Chameleon Days (the second half of the song is where it gets me) 5. Widow's Peak (goosebumps) 6. Love Is All That Remains...

I tried but couldn’t do it... Best I can do is top 4 in no order (as I listen to his solo albums right now). Rest Of The Day Off (its almost summer here in Australia and it’s a Saturday and I’m taking today off) Last To Know (fixing lawn sprinklers and listening to my young kids playing) Last One Standing (always a personal fav of mine) Second Nature (album version) Subject to change!!!

This song didn't wow me the first time, I forgot about it for a couple of years until playing it just the other day. It's a gorgeous song. I have a love/hate relationship with the production on One Nil. This is one of the high points. "Feel like an accident waking up Under a bus with my fingers crossed Now is the time we could make it up" This part sounds amazing.

Sinner (Neil’s first ever solo song I heard) I know different (Neil’s last solo song I heard) In My Blood (under appreciated song) Addicted (watched/heard Neil practice this many times at a sound check and couldn’t get it right BUT that night at the concert he hit every note)

Re: Rank every band/project/solo work
So do we rank these individual bands / artists / projects out of 10 based on their entire output? As for other projects, I would include the likes of Citizen Band, The Swingers, Phil Judd, Schnell Fenster, The Makers, Enzso, ALT, Neil & Liam Finn, etc. Unless this is specifically about the Finn Brothers, in which case some of those might not count.

Re: Rank every band/project/solo work
Feel free to add any others. I was doing it fron favourite to least favourite based on their output.

Re: Rank every band/project/solo work
Hmmm... this is quite difficult to rank one off projects against a body of work but I’ll give it a whirl... This is just based on my personal preference. I guess the way I have thought about it is who/what I would most like to see (while in their prime) or be most excited to see a new album from as opposed to rating against their full recorded output. 1 Split Enz v1 2 Split Enz v2 3 Crowded House v1 4 ALT 5 Finn Family* 6 Finn Brothers 7 Neil Finn and Paul Kelly 8 7 Worlds Collide 9 Crowded...

Re: Any Best Of Neil Finn (Solo)?
Excellent. Here's what I recommend. You see the problem with Neil Finn is that his best songs are almost always slow or mid-tempo middle of the road pop songs. Don't get my wrong, they're the best songs ever written, but when you put them all together the result can be a bit dull. So you gotta spice it up with some of Neil's more interesting material. Otherwise you'll lose your listener. With that in mind, I like something along these lines: Bodhisattva Blues - 7 World Collide Can't Put It...

Any Best Of Neil Finn (Solo)?
So I need to create a best of compilation for Neil's solo work as one of my friends would like to hear some of his songs and that is her preferred form to experience music for the first time. As we know, there isn't a best of album. Has anyone suggested a best of on a different thread on the forum? If not, what songs would you put on it?

Re: Where to start?
Before and After is early 90s Tim. There are a few trite moments and simple rhymes, but it covers a lot of good ground and includes "Persuasion", co-penned by Richard Thompson (middle 8 by Neil); one of his better singles imho. Say it is So was done with Wilco I understand, around 2000. It's got some grunge moments and has "Death of a Popular Song", which I still enjoy. I saw Tim on that tour and it was my first Finn show. I'm hardly an expert, and actually those are the only Tim I have. But...

Re: Where to start?
This surprised me so I tried to look into it...the drummer on Say It Is So is Ken Coomer, Wilco's first (but not current) drummer. That was the only Wilco connection I could find.

Re: Where to start?
Before & After is definitely a great album. My personal favourite Tim record is his self-titled album. Very underrated and deserved a lot more attention than it got at the time. Not Even Close is a beautiful song.

Re: Where to start?
I agree with the others that Tim Finn is great, as is Before and After. Imaginary Kingdom is a strong album too. If you're not necessarily wanting to be completest to begin with, how about the anthology? While some of the songs are reworked (and CH/Enz), there's something of a selection across his solo albums save the most recent one (if memory serves), so that might give you a taste and help determine if there's an era that you like, since they're all quite different. Or, if you're a...

Re: Where to start?
Completely agree with this. Tim’s albums are quite eclectic based on the era they were produced. I love many of the songs on Big Canoe but the production... well... is an acquired taste! I feel the same about Escapade. I would also either start at the beginning and make your way through them all or start with the Anthology and explore the albums based on the songs that most take your fancy.

Re: Where to start?
Feeding the Gods is one of my favorite albums of all time. But you have to prepared to rock out because it's a very energetic romp. After that, Say It Is So is my next favorite. Those two albums make a great one-two punch from the early aughts.

FTG is one of those “under different circumstances this would have been a big hit” albums, I think. And for all the great TF tracks on it, I still think Incognito is probably the highlight.

Although I don't listen to TF albums anymore, the ones I played the most were Escapade, Tim Finn and Before & After. I found Say It Is So to be unlistenable.

Rank every band/project/solo work
Here's a fun game. Let's rank every band/project done with the Finn Bros and solo work. To jog our memory here's a list of all the projects in the form of my ranking (by my count). I'm also separating Crowded House/Split Enz into two "eras". 1) Crowded House v.1 (1985-1996) 2) Finn Brothers 3) Neil Finn Solo Work 4) Tim Finn Solo Work 5) Crowded House v.2 (2007-2011/2016) 6) Split Enz v.1 (Judd Era) 7) Pajama Club 8) 7 Worlds Collide 9) Split Enz v.2 (Non Judd Era) 10) The Mullanes If I've...

Elroy "Excite Me Much" single
May 25th 2021 by Kim March Shortly before the pandemic rewrote all of our plans, Aussie new wavers Crowded House had announced their first album in over a decade, as well as the news that the group’s new lineup would feature vocalist Neil Finn’s sons Liam and Elroy as members of the band. While Liam has made a name for himself as a solo artist, Elroy’s earned his spot in the group through years spent as a touring multi-instrumentalist for groups like Wild Nothing and songwriters including...

Re: Elroy "Excite Me Much" single
I have thought for a very long time that Elroy needs to find a job. Maybe as a drummer (he’s pretty good), maybe something outside of music. A solo recording artist is something I don’t think he’ll ever be successful at. This recording only confirms my opinion. He doesn’t have the songs, and he doesn’t have the voice.

Drummer in his dad’s band seems a little too safe for someone of his age. I do worry about Elroy, I really do.
