Re: The Instrumental
Yep, the track on Other Enz is the same Finn/Judd composition, but it's not a genuine Split Enz recording as such. It was released as the B-side of a 1980 single by Graham Brazier (ex Hello Sailor) and credited to "A Ripper Bunch of Blokes." The "blokes" who played on the recording included Mike Chunn, Eddie Rayner, Rob Gillies, and Mal Green. Part of the tune was later used in "I Wouldn't Dream of It" on True Colours .

Re: Enz LIVE on the WWW (Holmes)
I hate to say it, but Tim didn't seem to be in particularly good voice. They played "129", "Dirty Creature", and "History" - the last sounded the best because Neil took the lead vocal! The line-up was Tim, Neil, Eddie, Mike, Noel, Emlyn, Rob, and an eighth guy I didn't recognise--Wally Wilkinson or Geoff Chunn, maybe?

Re: How cute is Neil in the jamboree clip!!!
In Stranger Than Fiction Mike Chunn refers (p.127) to Neil wearing "fake glasses" on stage, which suggests they were props. Interestingly, in the photo on p.59 it looks like Tim is wearing reading glasses. Hmm, maybe I need to get out more often.

Re: What Split Enz live material is available on cd?
Actually, surprisingly many do exist. Mike Chunn apparantly has quite a collection, as does Eddie Raynor. I'm also sure that Split Enz recorded many of their gigs themselves. I guess it's really different people and maybe they don't want it released. It's a shame, as they are an amazing band live if you can find the unmentionable 'B' word.

Re: Who'z yer favourite drummer (out of enz)?
Geoff Chunn is probably my favourite. I love his fills in the original 'Spellbound'. I think it's a shame they never stuck with him. He was somewhere in between the technical style of Crowther and the simple and solid style of Mal Green. Perfect, but it was not to be.

Re: Time For A Change guitar solo question.
I think Mike Chunn said in STF that one of the irritating things about Wally Wilkinson's guitar work was that he sounded robust on stage and like a twanging rubber band in the studio. If I think of a guitar line that sounds like a twanging rubber band, it's the "Time For A Change" solo on Mental Notes. . I don't know how to explain this, but you can *hear* when Phil Judd is playing electric guitar as opposed to others. The Second Thoughts solo sounds like Judd in the attack and...

Re: Time For A Change guitar solo question.
My money's on Wally Wilkonson playing the solo on mental notes. And to be fair on him, Mike Chunn quite clearly states that the engineer didn't care about doing his job properly, in STF there's a bit about Wally playing 'a' solo over and over again, with screaming distortion in the booth, but only a twanging rubber band coming out in the control room. Sounds a bit like TFaC doesn't it? One of the Enz webcasts mentioned that Dave Russell played the fast guitar lines in Maybe... And on Neil...

Re: Early Enz musical influences
Mike Chunn in Stranger than Fiction mentions a prog-rock band called 'Family' that he lumps in with Led Zep, Tull and Yes. I've never heard them, but the guys were apparently fans. Hendrix and Clapton were influences to Wally Wilkinson at least, which you can hear in Mental Notes. And Eddie used to do Bowie covers...

Re: Tim the Temp
Well it's pretty easy for most people to be truthful and still be tactful. Sadly thats not an artform that Nick has mastered. I'll have to disagree that CH was even partly Nicks band. Neil was always in total control. He hired Nick, fired Nick for a time, and only when Neil felt ready did he invite Nick back. When Tim joined, Nick and Paul didn't get a say in it, they were just told by Neil. CH breaking up wasn't a band decision, Neil just decided that was it and told the others. Paul, Tim...

Here's another from 1975, this one's from RAM in July '75 (details at bottom). I love Phil's reference to Brian Finn - early days indeed! Its slow work being a new band with a new sound No doubt about it, Split Enz is a strange band. They walk out on stage like a collection of clockwork scarecrows and their music is like a berserk mechanism. There are six musicians, a spoon player cum dancer and sound effects guy. And every one of em follows their own line of idiosyncratic action. Rhythms...

I've got a cutting from 27th Sept 1975, which is labelled as from a paper called 'Star'. The photocopy was from a penfriend I've now lost touch with, sadly. It's called "Just middle-class boys from Sacred Heart" and begins, "A third-form friendship at Sacred Heart College was the first step in the career of New Zealand's most original rock band, Split Enz. "Jonathan Chunn, from Auckland, and Brian Finn, from Te Awamutu, boarders at the school, shared an interest in music." I don't have time...

Re: Upcoming Split Enz shows on NZ Radio
Well, failing that, can you include entire versions of rarities in your doco - like the acoustic versions of Under the Wheel that M Chunn said were lying around at Mandrill etc? Other radio docos (wireless - early 70's) have rare pieces playing in the background and only then in part. Out of interest did Phil Judd grant you an interview?

Re: Upcoming Split Enz shows on NZ Radio
Guess 'easy' is the wrong word. What I meant was good timing - that the show promotes the CD and visa versa. Mental Notes' 30th is approaching and I recon a remastered re-issue together with extra CD of unreleased tracks, demos, interviews etc would be great. I keep hearing about lack of sales not making this not a 'hot' item but I think in NZ it would be a different matter. Anyway - this is art for art sake. How about another Govt grant? At the time of Mental Notes release the Enz were a...

Absolutely! :-) They even say that in the books written about them..."Tim took the high part, Neil the low..." Might have been from the Mike Chunn book. I've always thought that *technically* Tim was the better singer but that Neil was the more heartfelt, if that makes sense....and I've always appreciated Neil's turn of a phrase from a songwriting point of view. Other singers that I like that happen to sound like Neil are Michael Penn & Matthew Sweet and of course John Lennon, who...

Re: 'Nothing Wrong With You' NZ Musician
In the STF book, Mike Chunn commented that Neil's writing process was pretty arduous in that he starts of with a lyrical idea and then VERY SLOWLY shapes a song around it, investigating unusual chord progressions ... So my guess is that they have a fair idea what they're doing, though not to the extent that it becomes too 'clever' (Natasha Bedingfield, anyone?).

Re: Officially lost Enz recordings
It would seem that a lot has been lost from this era of the enz. I remember reading that they had many demo-ed songs that could not make it onto albums because of re-recording Mental Notes. Chunn refers to many songs played live but never recorded. I would imagine that if they existed they would be on the Enzology series. Of course there is nothing stopping them getting together and recording them now but thats another story.

Hey Incognito...for the band's 10th anniversary, Tim had wanted to get all the past Enz members together with the 5 guys in the band at the time (Dec 1982) to do a big concert. There was a live album and movie planned. Alas, only Mike Chunn, Rob Gillies and Paul Crowther turned up, and the Enz Of An Era shows that did eventuate had a mixed reaction from the crowd. I assume that new live renditions of past classics would have been recorded had Tim's idea gone ahead. I know that there was a...

Mike Chunn - The basslines in the early Enz stuff far outweigh the later recordings (in my opinion of course...) I always find that a good bassline consists of notes that shouldn't fit...but do. I totally agree. The only explanation for not asking Chunn or Crowther that I can think of would be (I'll admit it's a lame excuse but it's the best thing I can think of) then they'd have a drummer from a different era of the Enz. Crombie might not have felt like drumming on tour, who knows. It still doesn't explain why Mal wasn't invited back this time. It's a shame, because it reminds me of when other groups have reunited without some of their original members (either due to death or...

I agree with all that's been said. Personally I think Mental Notes and Dizrhythmia are prime candidates for remastering (Mental Notes needs remixing as well IMHO). Luton would be good too, but what about the rest of the Auckland concert that Nightmare and True Colours came from? I'd tend to think Book Enz should be on the list (author was Nigel?) and I must admit (shock horror) to have not yet read Something So Strong... so would have to vote for Seven Voices (out of...

The Luton version of "Next Exit" has more energy, but is a bit thinner in sound. The David Tickle-produced version done before this is even bigger in sound, with better rhythm tracks (if my memory serves me right.) That one hasn't been released either. The Luton recordings of the songs you've heard on the Aylesbury tape are fairly similar to the live performances. "I'm So Up" sounds a little dated now... and is now getting confused in my head with the Mike Chunn /Greg Clark solo version.
