Re: $30 for a single? $80 for a bootleg?

I'm an ebay addict and I've seen fan club CDs sell for over a $100 Australian. I can't provide you with proof but I swear I'm telling the truth. Proof can be found to frenz here who can find a "completed listings items page" LINK on ebay that describes/has an inventory of past ebay items sold and their final prices. The purpose of this is for you to check the VALUE of any prospective items/cds/books/video games etc et al you wanna sell.

I know Neil doesn't like people ripping off his studio work (He actually joined " Burn & be burned " - an anti-piracy orgainisation at the start of the year ), but I'm still not sure about his opinions on bootlegging. Ripping off fanclub CDs is obviously wrong (and you defenitley can't discuss that here ), but downloading unaccessible (any other way) live shows should be fine... (IMO) as long as you can justify it to yourself (I'm sure Neil wouldn't have a problem with someone obtaining...

I finally got my very own copy of the Enz DVD yesterday. To begin with, I felt a wee bit guilty about splashing out NZ$40, especially as I don't have my own DVD player. However, since the DVD is selling like hotcakes, I decided "yeah, why not?". First impressions of my first-ever DVD? WOW!!! This thing is fantastic. It's hard to pick out one particular favourite feature, as the whole package is great. Despite having had limitations on what could be licenced for use on the DVD and also time...

Without making this any sort of official comment as I always prefer to leave stuff like that up to Neil, all of us have always been fine about fans swapping live material. The main thing has always been to keep it subtle. The times when we will get heavy (put on my Docs now) is when someone takes full advantage of fans. Example: a few years back (no names please) a club member who was one of the first Life members got a copy of "stage talk" with his kit (we included them in a lot, just as a...

From what I hear from Peter, not every fan club member is into the internet, has decent access, or is interested in the forum. I think there are more like 13,000 Frenz of the Enz members, but being active here is not a must. Also, don't forget that I have it set up so that ANYBODY can read the forum but you have to sign up to post. So maybe we have 1500 members and 13,000 readers.

When I was a teenager, I went to see punk groups like the Dead Kennedys at this legendary hole-in-the-wall, chicken-wire type of club called the Electric Banana (long gone, now). (There was this old goth couple who everybody called Johnny and Judy Banana, who ran the place.) I snuck out to see Corrosion of Conformity at the Electric Banana (I was seventeen, but had a friend's ID...). I was wearing my new beret that I'd bought at an Army Surplus store. Much as I adore Neil's music and (if I'm honest) don't think much of Tim's work (with a few exceptions), it can't be denied that a) CH's (and therefore by connection, Neil's) most famous song was mostly Tim's, and b) CH's most succesful CD was mostly co-composed with Tim. I think it just shows that they work very well together, rather than that Neil needs Tim to get commercial success. Clearly that didn't happen with the Finn CD. Its simply that the with-Tim Woodface was the right record at...

Sorry for getting a bit off-topic here bit this is a question for Gryphon (or someone else); there seem to be more live-recordings from the Enz than I suspected. I recently joined the club but don't know about the 'range' of clubCD's. I do know that there are a lot of Crowded House liveCD's, are there also Split enz ones and if not; could there please be a possibility that some will be released? The tracklistings of the concerts above sound good.

The Living Enz and Anniversary are the only full length live CDs available, plus the live section of the DVD. There are two tracks from the Hammersmith Odeon 1980 on the Other Enz (What's The Matter With You and one I can't remember at the moment), and two anniversary tracks (Dirty Creature, Bold as Brass) with unadulterated crowd noise on the I Got You CD single. I think that it's problems with the record company. Split Enz were/are with Mushroom, Crowded House with EMI/Capitol/Parlophone, EMI et al were happy for CH club CDs, presumably Mushroom have a problem. I'd also imagine that the recordings would need a fair ammount of work on them due to age, and this would all cost money. Having heard True Colours and Nightmare Stampede from Oddz and Enz on the tape of the concert it is obvious that Eddie Raynor spent a lot of time tweaking the sound, as...

I think the proliferation of live CH material was due to the band recording many of their shows themselves. Because they then owned those recordings they were free to do with them as they wished. Luckily for us they made them available. I would guess that few live Split Enz recordings exist simply because the band didn't make many recordings themselves and the few recordings that do exist tend to be when the band was recorded by a third party (radio/TV etc etc) who owned the recordings. The club is still thriving, and in the case of the fanclub releases it's about the only way to get a hold of this sorta stuff. Without paying a fortune to probably get ripped off on eBay, that is (and NONE of us here would advise that!) I have to admit, I prefer the web for news as it is instant, but notice unlike a lot of band's websites, I don't really see much merchandise for sale on the site? So is the band not totally 'net friendly' as yet? That's not a dig, just need to justify joining the club over what I can see on the web. Thanks again!

I think that the benefits are multifold. For one, merchandise has in fact been pretty much restricted to the club and to concert sales, so if you're into that, it helps to be a member. Apart from being in a great "family", the most obvious plus are the live CDs which AFAIK are turning more towards the occasional Neil/Finn Bros. Live CD while the Crowdies CDs have run their course. Most of them had a 500 run only, so the copies are very much cherished by those who have them. The area this...

The Enz played Ballarat a few times, but the Hester show was quite an interesting one. It was certainly bad timing for Molly Meldrum as the Frenz of the Enz club hired a bus to take members to this first show. The thing that always amazed me was simply it was a good show, not a brilliant show, but a good show, and from memory THREE quite solid encores tended to show that the crowd wanted more.
