Nambasa Festival was called "Festival Music" and out on Stetson Label in NZ 2SLRP12. Frenzy/I see red/Bold as Brass... has a live Enz shot on the cover....(Tim and Nigel from memory). Released as a double LP in 1979. Same reason as most of the stuff, getting hold of master footage...that is in good (hell even average condition)....easy to say harder to do hopefully TVNZ will come up with some good stuff on Holmes!!! Very interesting on what cold happen for this. Peter, get on the phone to Phil - he's gotta do this - I know it is unlikely, but that would be a big thing for all Enz fans, as he is one of the geniuses behind it all....... a classic lineup from the early days doing Sweet Dreams...... oh the thought!!!

Re: Relevance of the Finns in the music industry

magneto 2 ·
On a more serious note, for the last 25 YEARS it has been consistently believed in the music world that the Finn, Split Enz and Crowded House were making music OUTSIDE THEIR TIME. No-one ever called Split Enz relevant in the 70s and 80s - they were always, to quote a music journalist of the day, 'Just outside their time' and just out of the mainstream. To paraphrase Rolling Stone, 'Neil could have written anything, in any style of music and had hits coming out of his proverbial, but he chose...

Phil should be asked by other Enzers to go along. Last time (20th) it seemed that it was left to others who managed to piss him off. Someone should suggest to Tim, Neil, Eddie to pick up the phone and demand he attend. Without him it will seem somewhat lop-sided. Any honouring of the origin of the Enz has to include him. Without him we may have got the 'Nee Zees' rather than the 'Enz'.

I finally got my very own copy of the Enz DVD yesterday. To begin with, I felt a wee bit guilty about splashing out NZ$40, especially as I don't have my own DVD player. However, since the DVD is selling like hotcakes, I decided "yeah, why not?". First impressions of my first-ever DVD? WOW!!! This thing is fantastic. Yes - very sad that the ABC have thrown away large amounts of timeless history, but they'd still have the VHS versions, right? I know material from VHS isn't as good as what usually gets put onto DVD, but earlier this year I taped the i983 Countdown Awards with Tim presenting a couple of awards & I also think he won 1 or 2 awards... I can't really remember, but it was really good quality (picture & audio wise), so what would be the main reason that kind of material couldn't make the...

Thanks, Peter. You're the man. This morning before I came to work, I just couldn't resist putting on the DVD just to watch that hilarious "GTK" feature. So funny! I love Phil's response. It's a shame that there is so little footage remaining from the pre- Dizrythmia period. I feel that the Mental Notes line-up is the quintessential, classic incarnation of the Enz. I don't wanna sound negative here but I like playing The Devil's Advocate . If you compare the SE dvd against it's Australasian Top 20 chart competitors on the DVD market place like George, Something For Kate, Kasey Chambers, Silverchair & Regurgitator it does come up a tad bit weak. The SFK DVD has about 40 separate clips of live and studio versions as seen here: http://www.hmv.com.au/v4/product/dvd.asp?sku=849776 The reason why I'm comparing these two bands is that Neil Finn is listed...

Forgetting for the sake of the argument, of course, that every band you mentioned began in the last 15 years, has the advantage of 90s/00s technolgy, and is still extant and therefore probably having money thrown at their promotion, whereas the Enz DVD was done on a tight budget, original Split Enz material is at least 20 years old and was recorded on what is now inferior quality media. Nah "Who can it be " you seem to not understand the actual point around budgets. It's a bit of a naive statement.... SFK and every single other band you mentioned are NEW bands. They have everything on digital, there are very little costs. The cost of getting the Spellbound doco alone would be close to the cost of the whole George DVD. The reason I know this, the George DVD was done at the same time as ours by the same company....plus their manager is our old tour manager...anyway all they...

Two questions for Gryphon. Is Paul Hester playing live with the enz? I was really bummed when he didn't play at the "Enz Of The Milleniuem" shows in late 1999. Still don't know why, but I hope he can make it this time. I was also wondering if Split Enz might play some of the songs they recorded in mid 1999. How cool would it be to hear the enz play something new(ish). I'd love to hear their versions of Edible Flowers and Sawdust And Splinters.

A great doco, but, with regard to the audio, 'Enz With A Muffle' would have been a more appropriate title. The audio quality was atrocious, especially at the start. Absolutely, I just hope we don't have to wait for the 40th anniversary for TVNZ to show us what they have in the archives. Maybe in a perfect world (before it really is too late and the footage in question is either destroyed or damaged beyond repair), the likes of the BBC would release their own DVD collection of Enz performances from 'Sight & Sound', 'Top Of The Pops' and 'The Old Grey Whistle Test', for example, amongst other BBC music shows that featured the Enz. I feel like these TV stations are taking the "dog-in-the-manger" approach to the footage they have in their archives. In other words, they...

Yep, the track on Other Enz is the same Finn/Judd composition, but it's not a genuine Split Enz recording as such. It was released as the B-side of a 1980 single by Graham Brazier (ex Hello Sailor) and credited to "A Ripper Bunch of Blokes." The "blokes" who played on the recording included Mike Chunn, Eddie Rayner, Rob Gillies, and Mal Green. Part of the tune was later used in "I Wouldn't Dream of It" on True Colours .

It's part of the reason why we didn't use a lot of the Enz with a Bang special on the DVD (also the cost). We fixed up some of the sound....and to be fair, the Countdown Footage from the same show was actually worse!!! See Jaffa's reasons why it would be a bit freaky on some peoples TV's etc etc.. 100% correct. The Sight and Sound, Hammersmith and OGWT footage is all well known. Indeed the Hammersmith stuff is played from time to time on one of their digital radio stations. Just got my DVD last Friday and I have to echo SD's comments - considering the budget they had to work with this is a top class effort. The Enz were a band with distinct phases which would have been difficult to capture given the fact that footage was hard to find and/or too expensive to use. But somehow the DVD pulls it all off - a good representation of all the band was about. I have a question about the Late Last Night clip - was the sepia used to "hide" tape damage? Because it seems sort...

Well, Gryph', I forsee some karma for those TV stations that wouldn't help you. It reminds me of the Little Red Rooster story we learnt at school as kids. But, sadly, it really seems like the BBC just doesn't know what a goldmine they're sitting on with the Enz footage they have. Just because the Enz weren't mega-stars (although we the fans know different), they don't seem interested in cashing in on a potentially lucrative market. There is widespread world interest in this material. Anyway,...
