September 1986 - September 2016...

BRANDO BRANDT ·
I'm very curious as to what might have delayed the 'official' announcement around the upcoming releases, as well as the logic behind a September release date. Don't Dream It's Over was released in Oct. 86' and aside from Now We're Getting Somewhere having been released in Sept. 86', I don't really see the connection between the dates. I'm still hopeful that with the official announcement, we'll get a surprise 2016-2017 Crowded House Tour. Maybe that's why Management and the band are being so...

Thanks both for your replies. I have sent a copy to Neil's management. Wish me luck! Please see below the synopsis. Fairly simple but I found it very emotional to write so hopefully that will come through, and of course, packed with fabulous Neil Finn/Crowded House songs. I really enjoyed writing it. It would be unbelievably inspiring to be able to put it on somewhere and that's my aim for the next step in the script's life as it were. Again, here's hoping....Thanks again, Lionel Synopsis...

Very intriguing. Lionel, just out of curiosity, what experience do you have with writing and producing musicals? There must be a ton of work involved in making something like this happen. The Poor Boy musical used a lot of Tim Finn songs and Tim was very involved in the process of crafting the story and selecting the songs. It was lead by playwright Matt Cameron, who had previously written a number of award winning Australian plays and was also involved in creating and writing for several...

Hi there, I'm afraid I don't have the level of experience to which you refer. This is the first musical I've written. I've experience in writing plays, books and other materials, and performed in plays and in bands etc but musicals had not inspired me before. But I think it must have been the depth of Neil's/Crowded House's songs that got me started. I'm not sure of my original inspiriation exactly but I know that was at the heart of it. Once I started I just couldn't stop. It completely...

In my opinion a Crowded House musical or stage performance could only be a comedy, and never really serious. An idea I have is, ACDC end up opening for Crowded House because they did make their 5th album and a 6th and 7th and they outsold ACDC and Michael Jackson.....and of course, then Jesus came back without any computer enhancement technology (laughing out loud...)

Nick Seymour on stage in Dublin

Midnight Oil performed the second show of their European tour last night, 11th June, at the Olympia Theatre in Dublin, a mere 25 years after their only other performances in Ireland! Irish singer/songwriter Declan O’Rourke opened the show and for the final song of his well received set he had two guest musicians - Midnight Oil’s Jim Moginie on guitar/vocals and Nick Seymour on bass/vocals. Crowded House will be represented again in Dublin tomorrow when Neil performs with Fleetwood Mac at the...

Release date on Amazon in the US is not until November 18 for the vinyl. No mention yet of the CD's. I think I'm going to wait and see if it is possible to just purchase the bonus tracks in download form at some point. I have no real desire to repurchase CD's of albums I already own, especially when I hardly ever listen to CD's any more.

I think the main reason to remaster any album of that era is, analog-to-digital conversion is vastly better than it was 20-30 years ago. All other things being equal, they will sound better for that reason. But I share your worry that all other things will likely not be equal..

I tend towards the assumption that there's nothing major behind announcement delays. That is, there's nothing for us to worry over/get excited about. It's probably just making sure that everything is in place promotion-wise before hitting the Go button. But it's the "newly mastered" bit that worries me. There's absolutely nothing wrong with the mastering on the first three albums - in fact, it's pretty much as good as one could want IMO. Together Alone could use a little less compression but...

A fair point about buying another version of Woodface so soon after the reissue. But in this day and age of boxed sets being released for classic albums I think it's more than justified. It also would be half a decade later. Personally I would have liked these deluxe versions to be staggered for release at the 30th anniversary of each album. It would have created more of a sense of event for each one. And by 2021 a Woodface boxed set would have been a much easier sell. Having said that I'm...

My gateway drug to CH was the 2006 Farewell to the World release - I’d heard of them before, but hadn’t listened to them in a decade or so, and FTTW came out around my 18th birthday. So Time on Earth and Intriguer are the two records I’ve experienced in “real time” so to speak. And I love those albums, because that whole era was great. In additional to ancillary personal memories, they make me think of the first streamed in studio gig, following all the other pre tour gigs in ‘07, the great...

Setlist and/or Rehearsal Songs

Romer ·
From https://www.rollingstone.com/m...eartbreakers-730187, it appears as though Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' "Free Fallin'" made the list of rehearsal songs being considered for Fleetwood Mac setlists, as did Crowded House's "Don't Dream It's Over." "Oh, Well" was also included, but with vocals from Mike Campbell, as Neil apparently felt that they required more of a bluesy touch than of which he was capable. The first Fleetwood Mac tour date is now only three days away, so more on the...

Wow! Nice additions there, particularly - "Man Of The World". Neil and Mike Campbell did a great job on it at Largo while they were in tour rehearsals so a little surprising it's taken almost a year to make it into the set - it was a #2 hit. Only a few of their singles from any era of the band have charted higher in any territory. With "I Got You' reinstated in the set that would potentially be an additional three songs featuring Neil on lead vocal going forward on the antipodean tour...

I can't really think of TOE as a CH album because, well, it isn't. All bar four songs were recorded by Neil as a solo album, which was only badged as a CH record when he decided - post recording but pre-release - to reform the band. His choices were either to release the album but abandon it promo-wise, or call it a CH album and persuade the band to tour it. But a CH album it ain't.

Good review. I’m also pleased they noted that it takes an additional 5 musicians on stage to complement the 6 billed as Fleetwood Mac. I’ve seen this tour and really enjoyed it, but it is very much best not to think too much about it, musicianship-from-Fleetwood-Mac-wise.

Interesting debate. For me it highlighted some of the history of the origins of Neil’s recorded work vs. the personnel we got to see touring it because that’s a part of what we’re talking about where Time On Earth is concerned. The musicians who toured that album were Crowded House, that makes it a chapter in the Crowded House career for me regardless of exactly who recorded what on the album, the percentage of Crowded House members on any given song or the number of songs they performed on.

I feel that Neil called it a CH album because, having decided to reform the band, doing anything else would have made life very messy: what were his choices? 1) Ask the band to tour his SOLO album. Not likely. 2) Release the album with no tour and head straight back to the writing desk. A real shame for the material on TOE, really hard work for the songwriter and frustrating because it would delay actually working/touring with the band. I remain unimpressed by any argument that he decided to...

I see the extra musicians as just filling out the arrangements...I don’t see them as compensating for something lacking in the core band. FM is rich enough to afford that level of production and I think they just want to put on a big show.

Article said that Stevie pushed for Free Fallin even though Mike Campbell isn't a big fan of the song after playing it for so many years. Sounds like the band is going more for crowd pleasers over more obscure songs. Fingers of Love would be fantastic in this setting.

The choices of who to work with in the studio are much different than who to work with live. Ligature’s point about Neil “presenting” a record live with usually scant relationship to the people who record it is spot on and not unique to Neil. McCartney’s band hardly plays on his albums, Noel Gallagher’s band doesn’t play on his either (even though Jeremy Stacey stopped touring with Noel, he still does his studio drumming), similarly with Bob Seger and countless others. The pattern always...

Time On Earth features 2 of the origional 3 band members on every song , which is more than can be said for other albums in their catalogue. And I'd agree. But you actually make my point: nobody thinks of Woodface as being a Finn Bros album because it contains a handful of their songs, and yet you're apparently quite happy to think of Time on Earth as a CH album when it only contains four songs recorded by the band. Woodface is a CH album because the vast majority of it was recorded by them with the intent of making their own album. How would you feel about the ownership of Woodface if - after CH had finished making it - Neil and...

Actually, I don't think Paul played any drums on the Together Alone title track. All session players! This is always going to be a gray area that can be endlessly debated. I accept that Neil and Nick started recording Time On Earth together with sessions players and at some point decided that what they were creating sounded more to them like a Crowded House record than a Neil Finn solo album. But Paul H's comment that it is intention that matters and not who is on the record means that the...

It's an excellent question, isn't it? Neil really did put himself in a spot when he decided that he did want to be back in a band and that that band could only really be Crowded House. The cleanest solution to me, would have been to release Time on Earth as a solo album and tour it as such, even if only briefly. I know that tours can be important for selling albums but at that stage of his career Neil was pretty much preaching to the converted only; that is, he was only selling albums to his...
