A fine guitar lesson - Don't Dream It's Over
I've just come upon a very thorough tutorial on Don't Dream It's Over. This guy really knows what he's doing (and a tiny bit of I Got You at the beginning of the tutorial). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7r8_y62j6Og

I have, but I'm not at home and don't have the iPod it's on with me. I'll try to remember to dig it out sometime and get back to you.

Re: Lost Fifth Album
I don’t get the question. It’s confusing because they released Afterglow after TA, and then of course two more albums later.

Re: Lost Fifth Album
I don't find it confusing at all. Afterglow was a "leftovers" album released after they broke up, some of which is post-TA, plus other material from that period exists. An "album" could be made from that material (and a pretty good one at that). The other two came years later after they reformed.

Re: Lost Fifth Album
Thanks for explaining, but the subtlety of the question was not implicit to me. I was unsure if the OP even knew there were albums after TA. I know they recorded a few demos with Peter Jones (ie Help Is Coming) but I didn’t know there was enough for a whole album. Are you counting the tracks with Paul recorded for Recurring Dream as well? B sides from Try Whistling This that were originally conceived as CH songs (ie Tokyo)? The parameters still aren’t very clear to me.

Re: Lost Fifth Album
Let me rephrase the question. If you were to create a 'Lost Fifth' track listing using demos, Recurring Dream tracks, B sides, rarities ect, what songs would you pick from that period of the band?

Re: Lost Fifth Album
The lost 5th album was also raised in the topic thread below. https://www.frenzforum.com/top...lbum-finally-arrived Camus presented a good track listing of: Help Is Coming, Anthem, I Don't Know You, Taste of Something Divine, Spirit of the Stairs (York St Demo), Loose Tongue, Instinct (York St Demo) Everything Is Good For You, Not The Girl, bonus track Instinct (single version) Tokyo would fit pretty well onto that track list too, making it a 10 track album.... I wasn't aware it was...

Re: Lost Fifth Album
Different order, but mine are basically the same as Camus'. Used the studio demo of Stairs and the rough mix of Loose tongue. Some have suggested that Astro was considered, but seems like Jaffa or someone shot that down. Have not heard it suggested that Tokyo was considered.

Re: Lost Fifth Album
I don’t know if Tokyo was ever officially considered or rehearsed by Crowded House, but I recall reading that it was written during the band’s tenure.

Re: Lost Fifth Album
Astro was kicking around at that stage, it was performed at a Finn concert in 1995/6 it's in one of the fan club CDs. Listening to the stuff recorded at the time there was some cracking material.

Re: Lost Fifth Album
I am quite fond of my lost CH album, which I call Something Divine. I chose to imagine a word where some new songs are being worked on at the same time that outtakes from TA are being considered and that Paul is still a member of the band. 1. New castle Jam 2. Anthem 3. Instinct 4. Everything is Good For You 5. You Can Touch 6. A Taste of Something Devine 7. Not the Girl You Think You Are 8. My Time is Now (Paul Hester) 9. Convent Girls 10. Help is Coming 11. Spirit is the Stairs (studio demo)

I can tastify that Painaporos album Something Divine is one of the best albums CH (never) released.

Re: Lost Fifth Album
I've made a playlist that could have been released in 1996 or so, it utiilizes a couple of outtakes from Together Alone, though. (And they do sound ever-so-slightly out of place.) But it's a great album full of fantastic mid-nineties rock. I actually really, really really like it and I think I would have just loved in 1996, which was right when I was getting into all things Finn. I even think it might have been a big international hit, it sounds so "of the times." It goes like this:...

Re: Lost Fifth Album
SOOOO much good music from that time frame! Sad they called it quits in what seems in retrospect to be a very creative time for Neil. But at least this stuff is "out" and we can enjoy it, shuffle it around and create interesting playlists and "what ifs".

Re: Lost Fifth Album
Another thought just came to me, "Walk Tall" was from that period. Though it was a live cut, would have been interesting to see it developed and see what would have happened in the studio. Could have fit well on the "lost album".

Re: Lost Fifth Album
To me, if these songs we know were on that "lost" album, it would be most probably second best album of CH, shortly after Together Alone, and maybe even with Woodface... Most of that songs are just brilliant, just to mention Anthem, Help is Coming, Taste of Something Divine, Everything is good for you, Spirit of the stairs are all just fantastic. Rest of them are also great...

I totally agree. My "Crowded House 96 " is my favorite Crowded House record after Together Alone.

Re: Lost Fifth Album
In addition to the 1996 CH album I shared previously, I also have a "bonus disc" to that album, which I call the Lost Tapes '96. It includes the following: 1. Most Unwanted (MTV UK live) 2. Instinct (demo from FTTW DVD) 3. Be My Guest (live on the Internet) 4. Not the Girl You Think You Are (demo) 5. Dots on the Shell (live acoustic performance) 6. Everything Is Good For You (demo) 7. Loose Tongue (demo) 8. Falling Star (live acoustic radio performance) 9. I Don't Know You (demo) 10. Spirit...

Re: Tell me about【Crowded House】:)
Kiita, I'm old enough that I heard "Don't Dream" when it was first released on the radio. It was a pretty big hit in the US, I remember liking it well enough, but only really became a Crowded House fan many years later when I discovered their entire catalog and realized what a brilliant songwriter Neil is. I think the lyric you quoted describes the explosion of feelings when the singer's love is with him. Probably my favorite (of many) non-Neil 80's songs is "I'll Melt With You" by Modern...

Hi Kita, Welcome to the forum, All frenz are welcome here, no matter how new. I know what you mean by Neil's songs making you shiver, we've all been there when the music speaks. However, that song wasn't the one that first had that effect on me, in fact DDIO, although now a big radio hit in the UK, wasn't originally a very successful song over here. I grew to love Finn music during the later Woodface era (the 1990's) and the first song to cause a shiver was Fall at your feet, I find the...

Re: Tell me about【Crowded House】:)
Welcome 😃 I can answer the first question for now. I was about 7 years old when Don’t Dream It’s Over was first a radio hit in the US. My family was driving to visit my grandparents, me and my sister were in the back seat, and the song was on the radio. It’s my earliest memory of really, really liking a popular song. I recall watching the rural Wisconsin landscape speed by and just really enjoying the song. I surely wasn’t thinking deeply about the lyrics at that age, but the melody and...

Thank you for your replies!! I am going to tell you all the things I changed Because of knowing your awesome explanation and experience in terms of Crowded House, I surely came to love them more Besides, your comments surprised me. e.g. Niel Finn was in the band called Split Enz (ohh, I like 'I got you'), 'When you come' was filmed in Japan(I wish I had known that at that time...I was not yet being born, haha), and his GIFT as a singer/songwriter. I will follow the songs that you guys...

Speaking of Eighties music, have you heard of the band Japan? They were an synth band, they were successful in Japan in the Eighties and David Sylvian also collaborated with Ryuichi Sakamoto of Yellow Magic Orchestra -YMO were great, but I haven't listened to them for years! Must look them up on YouTube. David Sylvian's solo material is also very good although it is more avant-garde, my favourite solo albums of his are Secrets of the Beehive and Gone to Earth.

Hello! Can't remember specifically the first time I heard DDIO. Probably took a while to seep 8nto my consciousness. Neil's songwriting style is not literal - that's why I love it. The lines you quote mean nothing by themselves and yet they evoke images and emotions. They are surreal and beautiful. Would reccoreco everyone checks out "Tombstone" on the Crowded House album. The lines "Look at all the plans I made/falling down like scraps of paper" mean so much to me.

Wow I've never heard the band 'Japan'. I checked some numbers on YouTube. Yeah, it is understandable that they performed on the stage with YMO. Interesting!! And thanks Neil_Fann for your experience, interpretation and recommendation. That song is also on my playlist

Re: Tell me about【Crowded House】:)
It's funny I wasn't that impressed when Don't Dream it's over came out. I had been a big fan of Neil's previous band Split Enz and really liked the idea of having two different song writers Neil and his brother Tim. So Crowded House seemed like a Neil Finn solo band and then Don't Dream its over was a hit in the US, I think I felt "well why didn't Split Enz make it in the US?" I think to an extent I've always compared Tim and Neil and kind of supported Tim, so I liked Woodface that Tim was...

Lost Fifth Album
What's everyone's thoughts on the 'Lost Fifth' album of Crowded House which would have been released some time after 1994. Has anyone made their own version using rarities? Do you have an order? Which tracks would be the singles? I'd love to find out!

Tell me about【Crowded House】:)
Hi there, My name is KIITA and I am a postgraduate from Japan. I would like to know about the songs by Crowded House. When I listened to the song called 'Don't Dream It's Over' at the World Masters Games 2017 in Auckland for the first time, I shivered (even though it was played by the copy band). Particularly, I love the quote 'But you'll never see the end of the road while you're travelling with me.' After coming back to Japan, I checked Crowded House and figured out this band is very...

Re: Lost Fifth Album
I always loved Dr. Livingston and the slew of Woodface and TA outtakes. Combined with the post TA tour singles and tracks worked on, I came up with two versions of the same 5th album. Kind of in the spirit of how 'Walking On The Spot' was a Mullanes track that finally made it on to TA. This even has Finn and Neil Solo output on it. The first 15 track album would've been released around early 1996, but suppose it was rejected by the record company and included some tracks he would have used...
