It is Neil, just mic'd oddly. Was very surprised to hear Strangest Friends in "Nonsense Of Course." That was fun. DH would have been a very different record if done by CH.

Depends on whether or not the vinyl editions are a 1 print run or not. Thats up to the record company to decide. It's possible that only the first-run has sold out & you'll need to wait for more copies to be printed & distributed.

I think the bonus disc to Afterglow is the most interesting one yet (I haven't got round to TOE or Intriguer bonus discs at the moment). To be honest, I never really gave this album the proper listen it deserved. Hell, I didn't even get it when it first came out. Glad to say I was wrong to ignore it and Afterglow is a very welcome addition to the catalogue rather than an after thought I assumed it was. It's the bonus disc that really got my attention though. The last eight tracks sound like...

I'm curious as to why the record company were hellbent on "Newcastle jam" being finished so it could be a single. I mean I guess it sounds fun and was likely to have a broader appeal than something dark like "nails in my feet". But it doesn't have a chorus! I assumed one must have been kicking around.. But it's not on this version. I also wonder about "convent girls" .."You can touch" and "I am in love" sound kinda unpolished to me as if they had been relegated to b sides before recording...

Guy., dont know for 100 % sure (Jaffaman will probably answer better), but I think these two songs are from shortly after Intriguer era (2011.) and they are part of "40 % finished " new CH record under production of Nick Launey. Wonder where rest of that 40 % (probably at least 2 or 3 songs) ended?

Was just about to post something very similar to this - you've saved me the bother! I also haven't heard the last two bonus cds yet - this is my favourite. (I found Together Alone disc 2 strangely a little disappointing - I was really looking forward to it) Isn't it a bit strange they left the York Street demo of Instinct off? I think it's better than the released version, and after all, they released spirit of the stairs and Italian plastic demos that featured on the farewell to the world...

Nice list! I would add Phil Manzanera's K-Scope which like Southern Cross featured Tim on lead vocals for a few tracks. Other Enzers were also involved. Mark Hart was a member of Supertramp for a few albums before and after Crowded House. Neil was featured prominently on several Dave Dobbyn albums including as producer and co-songwriter on Twist. Phil contributed music to a movie called Amy in 1997 but I don't know if the soundtrack was officially released.

You`re a man after my own heart I`m a Melbournite, and a Crowdies NUT and since 1998 I`ve been to every Melbourne show for Crowdies / Enz/ Neil Solo/ Pajama/ etc! Hahaha my singing's probably way off key. Sorry everybody in earshot! And we've probably crossed paths at gigs then! I've lived in Melbourne since 2007. The only Finn-related shows in the city that I've missed are one of the two gigs at Rod Laver in 2007 (I was a poor undergrad at the time and could only really afford one, though I now regret not going to both because I missed "Everything Is Good for You" the other night!), and most of the Paul Kelly/Neil Finn shows. Apart from how pricey...

Howdy all, this is my first post- fitting that it reviews my first Crowdies gig. I desperately wanted to attend the FTTW concert, unfortunately I wasn't alive at the time. Hopefully the views of a newer fan offer some youthful exuberance. Having said that, my tastes are quite similar to Axver, so I could have nothing novel to add whatsoever. Couldn't have asked for a better opening, three of the first four were singalong classics to get the crowd buzzing, whilst Mark's little catastrophe got...

No doubting its quality, I suspect for many of us it has simply become buried amongst the gold mine of Finn Bros melodies, whilst it never had the singles chart success to reach the masses directly. I was about 10 deep with the slightly more casual crowd, singing my guts out to it and nobody else seemed to know the lyrics.

Well, I was able to watch the live broadcast thanks to a kindly soul who took the trouble to create a DVD of it, and I spent most of my evening practically in tears. It's astonishing how much this music means to me. Just to see them on stage and genuinely loving it, especially Neil, was really wonderful. A magical evening. I'm on record as saying that I don't really care who Neil plays with as long as he keeps doing so, but there is something very very special about the music this band has...

Re: Fleetwood Mac (with Neil Finn) to Perform on The Ellen Show on September 5

Sugar Mouse ·
I had an idea today that could work well for the new Fleetwood Mac. The band would pick seven or more pre-Lindsey songs that would fit nicely with the new lineup. For example, Oh Well, Dust, Come A Little Bit Closer, Why, For Your Love, Green Manalishi, Hypnotized, Man of The World, Spare Me A Little of Your Love, and The Way I Feel are some possibilities. Then have the new lineup record new versions of these songs. Perhaps someone like Mitchell Froom could produce. In addition, have Neil,...

You found the photo I posted on Facebook! For some reason this Hoop.la forum distorts images disproportionately, so here's the direct link if anyone wants to download it. It was actually a screenshot from the Ellen performance and was heavily cropped and edited before I put it online. But I might as well reply here too! That...

Completely agree. They can simply record their practice sessions and hire a producer/engineer to put the songs into album form. In a perfect world, they would record it online like Neil did for Out of Silence.

Woody, Thanks for the work, I love playing around with playlists as well. If you want to edit Nonsense of Course and separate it from Dizzy Heights (though this is a CH version, not the Neil solo version), you should download a free program called Audacity. It lets you play a song and record it into a new file, then you can simply hit stop at the end of Nonsense and save it to a music file. It's super easy, if I can do it anyone can. I will add I could never get it to work on my laptop, only...

Froom does reproduce the original keyboard parts very accurately. But is that necessarily good, or what we want out of Crowded House live? One exception might be something like Into Temptation, where the live versions always felt like a too-simple version of the record. I’d love to hear Froom play that lush arrangement with the authentic Chamberlin sounds. But otherwise, I always appreciated how CH preserved the essence of the records live, but made edits and approximations, took departures,...

I agree a lot with what you're saying. I wouldn't want to hear a slavish recreation of the album versions. I was surprised to hear guitar parts I'd only heard on the original record and never performed live. It was refreshingly different but I prefer CH to play around with things on stage.

I agree. I better add, in my opinion, Something So Strong wouldn't be Mark's best work and maybe he sometimes got the BBHS solo wrong. But I thought Mark enjoyed tinkering the keys in Hole in the River and I reckon the live version sounds better than the studio version. If and when Mitchell Froom does "cut loose" I hope he doesn't copy Mark's little alternatives!!

Re: Complete Singles Collection?

Paul H ·
The thing is, how would such a collection be compiled? A great many tracks were only released in the UK, and some were exclusive to other territories. So, would a box be based on UK singles, Aussie singles or a hybrid? Would it be vinyl only (pointless IMO) or make use of the multiple formats that were issued on CD in the 1990s?

A tricky one . I started collecting the singles and had a list ( from somewhere) to check off from.I got them all save Better Be Home Soon which at that time was priced at £20.. far too much so I didn't bother. Most of the "singles" as you know were "doubles" with alternative "B" sides of live tracks and of course we have the special World Where You Live single which after 8 years or so shatters to small pieces without warning and Locked Out which becomes covered in some sort of plastic...

From what I understand, Neil plans to next record an album with Tim. Neil has said that they have an album's worth of songs already written. That assumes he doesn't record anything with Fleetwood Mac which I wouldn't rule out. My guess is that a new Crowded House record is unfortunately several years away.

I share the love for Intriguer (except for ‘Even If’ which I still don’t understand why on earth they would choose to write/record and release on an album...) and really wish Neil’s next move would see him going back home to CH. Personally what I crave the most is new music from Crowded House. A 3rd Finn Brothers record is a close second. A 4th solo album is third in my ranking ( I really would like to see him do more with Victoria Kelly - I feel like they’re on the verge of hitting the...

I wish there was more information like this out there. So fascinating to hear both his experiences and his opinions given that he was so closely involved with the recording evolution. It's just eye opening to hear how much these songs go through. Those of us who don't record hit records for a living are easily unaware of the labor and debates that go on behind the scenes. The band certainly doesn't just show up, record a song, and go home. It's hard to imagine, for example, Paul coming in to...

Dorthonion ·
Could it be you're mistaken in remembering this? I have also never heard of it, but (a) I think it makes little sense reprising a song that close to its first appearance and (b) when it comes to these two songs, I have read instead that originally (that is, before the record company objected the Finn Brothers' choice of opening tune) the song order ran like this: 11, 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 2, 10 So "Rarot onga" and "Paradise" are on opposite ends of the album. Makes sense, actually. To me ,...

Well as per one format or another, I heard it first in the CD / iTunes running order and prefer it that way. Having Kindly been given the chance to hear Troubles, I didn't really like it and for me, it'd didn't fit with the 11 track version I heard first - which I have to say continues to grow and be thoroughly enjoyed. It is IMHO a super record, I think its also best enjoyed with headphones and late at night. Merry Christmas Finn'atics!!

My pleasure. I've kept it all bottled up for so long. It was originally supposed to be a US Capitol Records box set of unreleased, rare, and live tracks in time for the band's 20th anniversary in 2006. For various reasons we kept missing deadlines. Then Parlophone in the UK released Farewell To The World , the band reformed, EMI and Capitol started disintegrating, etc.. Every year I was told the project would be picked up later in the year until, last year, it started coming true! The idea...
