Thanks both for your replies. I have sent a copy to Neil's management. Wish me luck! Please see below the synopsis. Fairly simple but I found it very emotional to write so hopefully that will come through, and of course, packed with fabulous Neil Finn/Crowded House songs. I really enjoyed writing it. It would be unbelievably inspiring to be able to put it on somewhere and that's my aim for the next step in the script's life as it were. Again, here's hoping....Thanks again, Lionel Synopsis...

Very intriguing. Lionel, just out of curiosity, what experience do you have with writing and producing musicals? There must be a ton of work involved in making something like this happen. The Poor Boy musical used a lot of Tim Finn songs and Tim was very involved in the process of crafting the story and selecting the songs. It was lead by playwright Matt Cameron, who had previously written a number of award winning Australian plays and was also involved in creating and writing for several...

Hi there, I'm afraid I don't have the level of experience to which you refer. This is the first musical I've written. I've experience in writing plays, books and other materials, and performed in plays and in bands etc but musicals had not inspired me before. But I think it must have been the depth of Neil's/Crowded House's songs that got me started. I'm not sure of my original inspiriation exactly but I know that was at the heart of it. Once I started I just couldn't stop. It completely...

In my opinion a Crowded House musical or stage performance could only be a comedy, and never really serious. An idea I have is, ACDC end up opening for Crowded House because they did make their 5th album and a 6th and 7th and they outsold ACDC and Michael Jackson.....and of course, then Jesus came back without any computer enhancement technology (laughing out loud...)

2 Tickets for Crowded House Saturday, November 26th

AMG ·
I am unable to use my tickets and would love to hand them off to someone who will enjoy the show as much as I would. They are currently in Will Call at SOH, so I will just need to call and take them out of my name and put them in yours. Please contact me at asha.genske@tlaworldwide.com. I'm in California, so be patient with time difference!

Missed this the first time around, thanks for reviving it, Hawk. Yes, a couple of very nice tracks. A little XTC-ish, too (in a good way). As I'm from the southern USA, curious as to "Atlanta" in your band name.

Thanks Hawk57 and Steve for having a listen, glad your digging it! Plans for the future, we're recording two more songs in April then bundling them with They Love You and Garden Varieties and releasing as an EP, we're also going to make a short youtube series in which we pair acoustic recordings of some newer songs with footage shot at our drummer's new place. As for the name, it was just one of those things i thought up when half asleep, you know when the synapses are firing different ways...

Good to hear there's more on the way! I thought I might have heard a touch of REM influence in Garden Varieties but I wasn't sure if it was just because of your name. Also I could understand the lyrics which isn't like REM at all

Split Enz (and Crowded House) Reviewed

AphoristicGraham ·
Hello, I'm a New Zealander, and have been a fan of the Finn brothers since my teens. As a hobby I've been working on a personal music review website, and I've just covered Split Enz: https://albumreviews.blog/reviews/split-enz/ I haven't seen many reviews of Split Enz's entire discography (although I haven't covered the live releases, Odds and Enz, or the Luton Tapes) in one place, so I thought that people might be interested. Let me know if I have any factual errors. I also covered Crowded...

Have a listen to my band Mode Atlanta - shades of Crowded House, or so i hope!

Hello Frenz, long time follower, Frenz life member and occasional poster here. I'd love for you all to have a listen to my band Mode Atlanta. These are our first two recorded tracks, they're called "They Love You" and "Garden Varieties". The reason i post them here is because Crowded House and Neil Finn's music has been a huge influence on my own songwriting, from the way i present my music (artwork that evokes childhood but through the eyes of adulthood, thanks Nick ;) to lyrical matter...

September 1986 - September 2016...

BRANDO BRANDT ·
I'm very curious as to what might have delayed the 'official' announcement around the upcoming releases, as well as the logic behind a September release date. Don't Dream It's Over was released in Oct. 86' and aside from Now We're Getting Somewhere having been released in Sept. 86', I don't really see the connection between the dates. I'm still hopeful that with the official announcement, we'll get a surprise 2016-2017 Crowded House Tour. Maybe that's why Management and the band are being so...

Release date on Amazon in the US is not until November 18 for the vinyl. No mention yet of the CD's. I think I'm going to wait and see if it is possible to just purchase the bonus tracks in download form at some point. I have no real desire to repurchase CD's of albums I already own, especially when I hardly ever listen to CD's any more.

I think the main reason to remaster any album of that era is, analog-to-digital conversion is vastly better than it was 20-30 years ago. All other things being equal, they will sound better for that reason. But I share your worry that all other things will likely not be equal..

I tend towards the assumption that there's nothing major behind announcement delays. That is, there's nothing for us to worry over/get excited about. It's probably just making sure that everything is in place promotion-wise before hitting the Go button. But it's the "newly mastered" bit that worries me. There's absolutely nothing wrong with the mastering on the first three albums - in fact, it's pretty much as good as one could want IMO. Together Alone could use a little less compression but...

I am not so sure that I would recommend to Neil that he work with Paul should the offer come his way. I recently read the book "Man on the Run". Excellent read btw. It is basically Paul through the 70's and he does not come across well in the book. Not that the book was meant to purposely make Paul look bad as it appears to be based on accounts of not only Paul but people who knew or worked closely with him. He does come across as a bit domineering and difficult to work with. After reading...

I heard, also, that he is difficult to work with and doesn't accept criticism well, but I believe that if the opportunity were to arise, Neil would be fully equipped to make the decision whether or not to work with him...and, who know? Perhaps, it already has and they both agreed that it wouldn't be a good idea.

In my opinion, since the break up of the Beatles, NF's beatle-esque songs have been better than PMs beatle-esque songs. If that makes sense.. Like FSIOD, NTGYTYA etc..

To me, Paul doesn't have the quality control Neil has. Paul continues to write incredible songs (see his fabulous recent album "New"), but can also write some clunkers. Neil seems to have a higher percentage of elite level songs. I suspect Neil has a stricter "internal critic" or has others (Tim, Sharon, Liam etc) who help him know when a song "has it" and when it still needs work.

To be honest, I suspect that Neil may share some of the traits that I described in Paul. I sure Nick can tell some stories about Neil that may not be complimentary, particularly with the first maybe 2 or 3 albums. He did have a blow-out with Mitchell Froom and that may have been because he wasn't getting his way. So, putting two people like that together may not be a good idea. With "Out of Silence", I not sure that anyone was really there to tell Neil that "this is crap", not that I think...

I've always wondered how a Macca/Neil collaboration would go but some of the previous assessments are correct about Paul not taking criticism well. There's a great podcast featuring Beatles biographer Mark Lewisohn I listened to where he tells a first hand story. Paul's then manager told him Macca had gone ballistic over Elvis Costello giving him an honest appraisal of his songs. The podcast is long but well worth a listen if you're interested in Macca. I can't remember which point in the...

“Albert Einstein was once asked, ‘How does it feel to be the smartest man alive?’, he responded, ‘I don’t know, you’ll have to ask Nikola Tesla.'” or so goes the urban legend. Perhaps the Neil / beatle guy version, was a clever update. Neil has his own legendary status, and it needn't be marred by association. IMHO, of course.
