The first three songs on Scarlet's Walk hold up for me. They're songs. The rest of it sounds like it was thrown together in the studio, jammed out. "Wednesday" is as good as she's ever done IMHO. Also, I don't think Little Earthquakes has dated that well. I think the story about Alanis Morrissette lying on her bedroom floor rolling around balling her eyes out listening to it because "it spoke to her" sort of tainted it forever for me. Under The Pink, especially towards the end has that...

Black Cloud thanks for the back up! I actually cannot afford to buy as much as I used to (the joys of parenthood). Why couldn't Finns follow something of Wilco's lead? They have just re-released 'A Ghost Is Born' with an additional 5 songs. However, if you already own 'A Ghost Is Born' on CD, all you need to do is pop the CD in your PC (or Mac I presume) and you can download the same tracks for whatever your downloads costs are. I don't think Jeff Tweedy is the richest songwriter around, but...

Woke at 4.30am Sunday in Mallorca and realised at the end of the day I'd get to see my songwriting idol. Returned from holidays that morning just in time. Im a huuuuuuge Neil Finn fan. Too tired to structure this so I'm going to ramble in a stream of consciousness kind of way. First off...amazed that one of my heroes (and his brother) played my home town. Overall I was on cloud nine for the whole night and still am a bit. Random high points... Nick Seymour playing (a virtual Crowded House)...

You would have to have known that the Finns are still touring Everyone is Here, and although I couldn't see any mention of whether you were at any of the shows last year, there have been enough reviews to give you a very good idea of what would be on...

Chrysalis Enz Transfers

Iarla ·
Hi all, Got a question. Regarding Chrysalis's use of the Enz Masters (for Second Thoughts\Mental Notes Mk.2 & Dizrythmia). Did anyone else notice that they've sped them up somewhat. I thought my turntable was gone a bit mad when I played the vinyl release of Mental Notes (US Pressing), but now have the US Cassette Tape versions of Mental Notes (Mk. 2) & Dizrythmia, and they both seem to have the speed up too. Having tested the tapes on several machines. I've not noticed it on the UK Vinyl...

From Novelty Act I'd choose Falling Off A Cloud and Idol Eyes...I love the way that song changes style and pace - harking back to Phil's Split Enz days. You'd have to have Love Hate Relationship, Whisper and OK Alright Uh Huh Oh Yeah by Schnell Fenster, but I think I prefer Happy Feet to Heroes Let You Down. I think I'd steer away from Split Enz songs with Tim only vocals, except Time For A Change which would go after the Mental Notes Stranger Than Fiction. Spellbound would be from Beginning...

I have to agree that coming up with a Phil Judd compilation is rather hard considering that i have been drowned in Tim & Neil's songs for over 20 years. I certainly do like Schnell Fenster & it clearly shows on this compilation as I believe that Phil's best songs came through the Schnell Fenster period. Phil's solo stuff just does not do it for me. Anyway here is my list. Maybe Titus Matinee Idyll Sweet Dreams Counting The Beat One Good Reason One Track Mind Dreamin' Away Falling Off...

No relation to finn elders track. This is a great album that just grows on you. There are so many brilliant tracks. Some of them would easily lend themselves to an enz treatment. Makes me think how great it would be if they could showcase a few in the upcoming tour - say three songs...Late Last Night or True Colours, Falling off a Cloud and Fire Extinguisher. A reunion of sorts of the 78 lineup.

Maybe the original artwork masters no longer exist. If so, this isn't a new problem. After White Cloud Records closed down in 1976, Mental Notes was unavailable in New Zealand until 1980, so Festival Records used a second-hand copy for the artwork on the Interfusion label reissue!

Ok folks, could we just be practical about this for a moment??????? Neil is at the enz of the Splits and he needs material after he forms CH. Now it isn't that he JUST needs matrerial, he needs material that a working band can play in concert. The SE version of IWA is not going to cut it since he can't lug around a string section. Please also remember, this is 1986. The capacity for a band to reproduce a decent string sound with say a keyboard is VERY limited. Given those restrictions it is...

http://www.austin360.com/blogs/content/shared-gen/blogs...l_crowded_house.html Crowded House’s first new album in more than a decade, “Time on Earth,” is rather subdued, recorded as it was in the wake of drummer Paul Hester’s 2005 suicide. On the AMD stage Friday, the reunited band proved less mischievous and extroverted than in its late-‘80s heyday, but there was no loss of energy or edge, and joie de vivre was still in evidence. Frontman Neil Finn is generally tagged as a pop guy, thanks...

Not exactly packed full of rarities is it? I think I already own most of these songs and live versions aren't exactly what I consider "rarities". "White Cloud Black Shadow" is particularly lovely - a very gentle demo, reminescent of "Winter Light" in atmosphere. Love the line "white cloud casts a black shadow on a green hill". "Pulled It All Down" - I remember reading about this at the time Tim sang it to a bunch of city counsellors as a protest to the proposed demolition of an old theatre in Devonport. I think he said that he wrote it the day before the submission - it sounds like it but still quite catchy of course "Throw Your Arms"...

Ah there are a few classics like that, but to me that's all part of the charm of music, seeing what gets dumped and what evolves years later. So I'm very glad to be able to have these rarities, including the stuff I've had for years but now have a cleaner version of. I hope it's the first of many. White Cloud, Black Shadow along with Pulled it all Down and Rock 'n' Roll Girl you'd have to say are rare. As for the others, do those of us who've had them for so long just take them for granted?

I'm very late to this debate so I'll say only this: I buy EVERY album with the full knowledge that I may well not like it. Granted, different artists have a greater or lesser likelihood of me liking/not liking their latest opus, but I accept that any given album or single may go on the shelf unloved. And if this happens, so be it. I never consider that to be a rip off, just an unfortunate event that NEVER justifies illegal downloading. I would just as likely download an album as I would take...

It depends on what you want. Although it was a dreadful kick in the teeth for George, the best starting point is probably 1976's Best of George Harrison (which you've got) because it has all his best known songs on it. Thereafter I would recommend Best Of Dark Horse 1976 - 1989 because it contains all his most well known songs from that period. However, if you want to dive into his proper albums, I'd go for Cloud Nine and All Things Must Pass. The latter contains brilliant songs, beautiful...
