Re: RIP Columbia Astronauts

Sad Claude ·
A very sad time. Uncannily, I put on Peter Gabriel's latest CD, Up, today and found myself listening to the last track, a lovely piano-led track called "The Drop". The words speak for themselves: moving down the fuselage toward the open door catch you looking down outside to see what lies ahead one by one you watch them fall fall through cloud one by one you watch them fall no idea where they're going but down where they've gone where they've gone watching as the sun goes down i sit inside...

Real Groovy is one of the better NZ stores for picking up vinyl. Online stores can be a real help, too. Personally I find that Enz vinyl is becoming rarer and rarer, and I can't even begin to imagine how hard it is for you non-Antipodean Enz fans. I'm collecting the NZ pressings of the Mushroom albums and have 3 more LPs to get... Mental Notes (the White Cloud issue, of course), Frenzy (original without 'I See Red') and History Never Repeats . However, it would seem that those 3 are the...

Martine! I was the poor girl under Neil's mike stand that you shouted "Winnepeg" at! I thought it was fantastic that he spoke with you! It was my first Neil live experience as well, and I had flown in that morning from Lethbridge, AB to catch the show. I had such a great time, and met some very cool people! To Dina and her pals, Thanks again! Three hours to be the first in line was totally worth it, and a lot more fun because of the people I met! I thought I would be spending the whole time...

Mine started last week. I had one girl who was totally psyched, because school is her thing, she sits in the front row, raises her hand every time, gets all A's, and tells on other kids...so she was on cloud 9 to go back... However, I had one boy who has just started going to school all day instead of half a day, and who is used to the "fun stuff" in Kindergarten and isn't too happy that he actually has to work in 1st grade. The first day, he came home and informed me that "First grade is...

I saw Crowded House In Nashville,1994-the day AFTER Paul Hester left the group! I missed him by one show! I always held out hope of a possible reunion. It's too bad that now there will be a sad cloud forever over such a positive group. I hope the music is remembered more than this sad event. God bless Paul and God bless us all!

All recent events aside, here's an interesting musical thread. I've only heard a few tracks from Novelty Act - So I can't judge the album completely. I've heard "No One's Best Man", "Falling Off A Cloud" and "Eyes In The Back of My Head". I wasn't completely taken with "Eyes In The Back of My Head", although it did remind me a little of "Summer Of '68" from the Mr. Reliable OST. I really enjoyed "No One's Best Man", and "Falling Off A Cloud", they were musically interesting and really well...

Re: Poll to Get the Milwaukee Show Released!

Evvie ·
I'm honestly baffled by the decision not to release it. Maybe I was just so on cloud nine, because this was my first CH show, that I didn't notice whatever vocal troubles were going on. I find that implausible, though, because I'm legendarily voice-obsessed. I was pretty close to the front, though, so the blaring sound could've hidden a lot. I also saw several more shows, so my memory of Milwaukee is partially overlaid by others now. If the band isn't comfortable with the release, I guess I...

I feel really privileged to have attended the last showing of White Cloud at Bats theatre last night. Bats is a small theatre for Wellington (so TINY from any international perspective). I think full capacity is 90 or less. Last night the Finn clan (sans Neil) were there for the final night. It almost felt like a private showing for the family. It was incredibly touching to see Tim there with wife, sisters and especially his Dad (and some of the wider family I presume as well). The show is...

For closure's sake, I should probably post that Gloria has just passed on. It seems that she was not a match to continuing here, and may not have ever been. Me taking her in and caring for her obviously could not change that energy. On the physical level, we don't know what internal problems she may have been born with, and we don't know if Junior's style of mothering put her in a condition that could not be healed. I thought that she was getting stronger and doing well, so her death has...

"Aotearoa" is NZ's Maori name, meaning "Land of the Long White Cloud." Unfortunately, it's mispronounced in the "Six Months" recording, as were some other Maori words on "Time and Tide." The pronunciation in "Can You Hear Us" is more correct.

Make that one more for the Enz version. Verse after the chorus is sooo pretty - singing, echo, piano background. I do like the "I said forget it, it's over as a black cloud covered up the sun" line in the CH version though. The only thing I ever heard Neil say about the CH version of this song is that they left it off the Aussie release cos they didn't want "unncecessary comparisons" being made. I think that makes sense. As to why bother re-record it? Neil often commented that one of the...

I think it's a brilliant record. Drive has some good songs on it but I've always found the arrangements rather bland and uninspired. With Beautiful Collision I think she's really grown into the role - her voice sounds better in the mix and there isn't a bad song on there. My top 3 are Get Some Sleep, Election Night and the brilliant closer, Gravity. There's a lot of emotion in this record, I think, and Gravity brings it all together in one amazing track. I think it's a great little album. I can live with the '80s production because Tim's songs shine through the gloss. Juddsy's guitar work is a little sweetener. Been playing the title track a bit lately...Tim has a great way of verbalising Maori themes. "Big canoe come and cut me through the thin white cloud to the archipelago" - a great line relating to the Maori discovering NZ.

Yep, I'd say that's spot on. But if there's one thing that's for sure and certain, it's that some non-designer that knocked it together is SOOOO proud of themselves right now. It's hard to not be a blatant jack-ass sometimes, cause non graphic designers will throw together the worse looking crap and will be on Cloud Nine about it. Unless it's kind of important, you have to sometimes juts bite your lip and not comment too much either way.

I think your concern for Tim and Neil and their reputations is really admirable, I too would hate to see them harassed in anyway. I think as the good artists they are though, they should not be scared of bad reviews, i think if you're too careful you risk the road of slow decline. I don't think either Tim or Phil are risk averse musically. The fan club release would be OK but I think there would be demand for it outside the fan club. They really take this Beatles-adoration too far, the Gallagher brothers. At first they sounded fairly different, but more and more they seem to spend their time trying to imitate everything about John Lennon. If you ever get the chance, have a listen to Julian Lennon's song 'Valotte'. The resemblance between his vocals on that and his father's songs is...
