Hi Trish, I have 2 tickets to the Saturday of the River Boats Festival, which is now sold out. Neil is playing I the evening. They cost me $170 for the two and off course as FRENZ do I'm happy to sell them for the same as I paid for them. Let me know within 24 hours via private message if you can please. Regarding a “Finn family band,” that’s basically what he’s done for his last 4 albums, isn’t it? Pajama Club, Dizzy Heights, Out of Silence and Lightsleeper all heavily feature the Finns. I have no desire for yet another configuration. In fact this is the one thing I hope he doesn’t do again for a while. I’d love to see a “Try Whistling This” solo album situation where there are several producers and mixers involved, and musicians vary quite a bit from track to track with lots of special guests.

I do remember hearing something about that. So Sheryl Crow was definitely asked to join? Was this essentially to perform Christine McVie's songs because Christine wasn't in the bad during that period? Would have been interesting to see what would have come of it. It's a fair point, but with Dizzy Heights and Out of Silence it was Neil making all the decisions and bringing every song and idea to the table himself. Sharon and Elroy only really served as backing musicians in the same way every...

This sounds great. I would be up for an album like this. I would also be interested in hearing Neil do a full album-length collaboration with someone else outside his family (but not Fleetwood Mac). I loved the album with Paul Kelly, but I’m not sure if that would be the most interesting collaboration because I feel they are similar in many ways. I’m not really familiar with Jimmy Barnes, but get the impression his music is nothing like Neil’s, so that could be interesting.

Re: What's Next for Neil Finn?

I guess Neil's is the only songwriting I care about from the Finns, so this wouldn't interest me at all. And The Sun Came Out, while a nice idea, yielded results that were fine, but not much more than that. I think the role of Neil's family is a little underestimated; I don't think Neil is dictating every single little note for Sharon and Elroy to play. They're still bringing their personality and playing style to the table, even if Neil is in charge. And so I feel even though the...

As far as what I want , how about all of the above . But a lot of interesting possibilities. If Neil is going to be in FM, I really want to see new music from them, and see how HE influences the band, what he brings to the table, aside from a hired hand to play and sing the old hits. The Time album, while not their best, at least showed what Dave Mason, Bekka Bramlett, etc, brought to FM. Finn Brothers - YES. They bring out the best in each other, and if they have much of an album in the...

It’s good to be Neil Finn. I suspect family, and to a certain extent, location will play a big role in Neil’s next endeavor beyond touring with FM. Maybe more LA based adventures are in the cards for Neil, to be closer to his grandchild. It’s always a surprise, isn’t it though? I feel more confident saying that guitar will be front and center for the next recording.

Re: What's Next for Neil Finn?

I’m not particularly confident saying guitar will be more prominent next time, but I was thinking earlier today that I would definitely like to hear more guitar. I think I am in the minority here, but I’ve kind of had enough of the minor key meandering piano songs. That isn’t music I would really ever choose to listen to. I listen to it when it’s Neil, but then tend to put it away and not often return to it. I realize there’s a lot of that in Lightsleeper, but there is so much more in addition.

I'm a complete sucker for piano songs so I adore Silence and Lightsleeper and would welcome more of the same. That being said, I will follow Neil's musical path where it shall lead. Sounds like he'll be playing guitar and not piano with Fleetwood Mac so perhaps more guitar driven songs will be down the road. If Christine leaves the band, I could see Neil taking over keyboards for her and Sheryl Crow playing rhythm guitar as I believe that's her preferred instrument. The other thing I thought...

I’ll do that too, and I don’t believe there will ever come a day when I won’t listen to something that Neil releases. However, as I said about a year ago regarding how hard I tried to love Out of Silence, you can’t force yourself to like music you don’t like, no matter how much you want to like it. I adore Lightsleeper. I truly believe that album is going to make it into my top 5 all time Finn albums. The meandering piano is but one part of those songs and makes a great contribution to an...

Didn’t he just say in an interview a couple of days ago that he was planning for his next project to be more electric guitar driven, having been on the piano for a few years now? I’d say that’s reason for confidence.

You just reminded me of one possibility I neglected to mention... A supergroup in the style of the Travelling Wilburys! Imagine what a fully-fledged band comprising of the likes of Neil Finn, Mark Seymour, Paul Kelly, Dave Dobbyn, Jimmy Barnes and Bernard Fanning could come up with. Trust Neil to make a hard left turn and end up doing something like this haha. For what it's worth I'm not a big Jimmy Barnes fan. I do love Cold Chisel , the band he was in before he went solo. Re: the Dizzy Heights songs, that album always struck me as lyrically unfinished. I adore the verses in Recluse but the chorus and bridge seem unpolished to me. Same with some other songs on that album. Flying In The Face of Love, Divebomber, White Lies, and Strangest Friends are my favorites on that album.

Just to clarify, I was referring to the "half an album" that was supposed to be in the can after Intriguer, but then three songs found their way onto the Intriguer bonus disc. If there's anything else from those sessions would still be "out there". And YES, the tracks you listed would have made a great seventh album. I pretty much consider it Intriguer Disc 2.

I quite like your description of FM band members. They’re mature and concise. I agree with you with Neil being laid back and more open to everyone’s interpretation to what they will bring but never forget Neil’s style is to over polish in some respect. Would be interesting to see how this will affect all members 😉 But more importantly letting go without mulling over a word, key or phrase change. Cannot wait for the Ellen show.

My interest level of proposed future album projects for Neil: 1 - Crowded House 2 - Finn Bros. 3 - Split Enz 4 - Finn Family 5 - Neil Finn (solo) 6 - Fleetwood Mac album 7 - 7 Worlds 8 - Neil w/ Jimmy Barnes or other collaborators 9 - Neil & Liam 10 - Pajama Club 11 - Movie soundtrack Maybe it’s wishful thinking, but I’m hoping that being onstage as part of Fleetwood Mac, brandishing a guitar and playing someone else’s pop-rock masterpieces, may inspire Neil to put out something a bit...

Why do we need to “ let Crowded House rest “ ?! (: Its the best thing Neil ever did . Its the thing I yearn from most from Neil . Light sleeper may grow on me , but I still hope for the type of songs that Neil created with the best band since the Beatles . Can people not just say what they’d like to happen most as the initial post requests rather than preach that something as brilliant as Crowded House be “ let rest “ ?!

I'll go along with that and I'll say it: I want Crowded House more and rather than anything else. It's the best Neil sound for me. And I want guitar-driven rock/pop with Nick's bass lines and Mark' harmonies and keys and Matt's brilliant drumming. I get his need for other projects. Fleetwood Mac, the piano ballads, the meandering keyboard experiments with Liam. Still better than a lot of other music out there, and certainly interesting. Problem is, most days I don't want "interesting" music,...

To be honest, as much as Crowded House means to me, the bottom line is whether or not I like the music. If each and every album Neil has been involved in had been crammed full of the kind of great songwriting he produced during the original CH era, I don't think we'd be having this discussion. I'm not saying his writing has got worse over the years, just that he's veered away from the style that first drew me to him. I still enjoy enough of his work to stay interested but his more recent...

Ok, but tell us which rubish songs in CH catalogue are that? And which Neils "great" songs in era after Intriguer are that (except Out of Silence album in whole)? See, I can relate with those who was dissapointed how Intriguer turned out - all that americana unnesecery style, Wilco infuence, lack of energy, sounded too loud without good reason, but... Most of us here can agree that all Intriguer era (bonus 2. disc of Intriguer) was fantastic time, with lot of classic pop-rock songs in which...

Mariola, you really shouldn’t base your argument on metacritic reviews. Music is so personal. It’s all about what it means to you . I am firmly in the camp that Neil’s recorded output since Time on Earth has not been as consistently wonderful to my ears as that which came in the 10-15 years before, but the metacritic scores don’t agree with what does and does not speak to me. Just because “professional critics” (whatever that means) rate Out of Silence over Lightsleeper doesn’t mean I am...

Music is highly subjective, so there's no reason for anyone to agree with anyone, professional critics or not, about what they like and what they don't. E.g. for me 'Wings at the Speed of Sound' is Wings' best album. Moving to the topic of Neil's music pre- and post-Time on Earth, Neil definitely has changed his music. Clearly there are some people who will like that, and some who don't. But, artists rarely stay the same pumping out album after album for decades at consistent quality. If...

I am sure that there are some folks who think that Paul Weller made his best music in 80s, but its definitely not something universaly aclaim. Further, what to say in my case when about every new Neils album after TWT I have more similar opinion with most of the critics than most of the fans here? Am I not having a right to be subjective? In the world where we live, more people know him as "Crowded House guy". And some of those folks realize what a great band they were. Until the mid-90's I was a known to friends as a HUGE fan of their music, yet (yes, I'm ashamed) I hadn't memorized the band members' names. But the music was AMAZING.
