quote:What kind of things do drummers look for in other drummers then to form an opinion of their skills? I know that lots of drummers rate, for example, John Bonner (Led Zep), people obviously rated Paul Hester, very different drummers I would have thought. So, apart from, obviously, each person's individual tastes, what sort of thing do drummers look for in other drummers?
Good question hk! Personally, I look for the 'feel' that a drummer creates for the music. There are many technically better drummers than Paul Hester was, but what he lacked in technical ability, he more than made up for with his feel - in other words the way in which he interpreted the song, and came up with a groove that would compliment it, as opposed to a groove or rhythm that is more 'flash' and might be at odds with the song.
I have always adopted the 'less is more' approach, which is probably why I was attracted to Neil Finn's music, and Paul Hester's drumming to start with. Somebody said to me once that you shouldn't be able to notice the drums when you listen to a piece of music, and whilst I don't entirely agree, I know what they were getting at.
From what I've heard so far (ie the webcast) Matt's sounding good so far.
