Reply to "Thoughts on Matt Sherrod"

After some more listening I've realized Matt is an "on top of the beat" drummer -- his playing is just ahead of the groove, which constantly pulls/pushes the music forward. You can hear it especially when he does fills, like the big, crazy one at the end of "Silent House" on the webcast...he really pushes through it to the point that it almost sounds like he's speeding up.

Paul, on the other hand, had that classic "in the pocket" kind of drumming...he sat right in the middle of the beat, which is a more forceful kind of playing.

Neither one is good or bad or better or worse, but it's an interesting contrast. I think it takes players a while to adjust to a change like that, especially Nick on bass. They sound pretty good already, but once they've all re-situated their grooves, it will be even better.
